A complication probability study for a definitive-intent, moderately hypofractionated image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy protocol for anal sac adenocarcinoma in dogs.

Previous trials showed the importance of administering radiation therapy (RT) with small doses per fraction in canine pelvic tumours to maintain acceptable toxicity levels. With increased accuracy/precision of RT, namely intensity-modulated RT (IMRT), this approach might be challenged. Theoretical toxicity calculations for a new definitive-intent moderately hypofractionated RT protocol for canine anal sac adenocarcinomas (ASAC) were performed, focussing on the risk of toxicity in pelvic organs at risk (OAR). Computed tomography datasets of 18 dogs with stage 3b ASAC were included. Re-planning

Analysis of Dual-Energy Computed Tomography Imaging for the Evaluation of Lymph Node Metastasis in Canine Anal Sac Gland Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report.

A 9-year-old neutered male miniature schnauzer was referred to our facility with polyuria, polydipsia, persistent hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and elevated parathyroid hormone-related protein. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) imaging revealed a mass in the left anal gland (LAG) and enlargement of the left medial iliac lymph node (LML) and the left internal iliac lymph node (LIL). The mass was surgically removed, and the histopathological diagnosis was anal sac gland adenocarcinoma, with metastasis to the LML and LIL. The pathological findings were concordant with those obtained from

Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in nude mouse model of a canine adenocarcinoma derived from apocrine glands of the anal sac. Biochemical, histomorphometric, and ultrastructural studies.

A serially transplantable tumor line, designated CAC-8, has been developed in nude mice from a spontaneously occurring adenocarcinoma of the anal sac from a hypercalcemic dog. Nude mice with transplanted CAC-8 developed hypercalcemia (mean 16.3 +/- 0.6 mg/dl) and moderate hypophosphatemia without bone metastasis. Urinary excretion of calcium and hydroxyproline were increased 6- and 2.3-fold, respectively. Urinary excretion of cAMP was moderately increased but phosphorus excretion was not significantly altered. Serum 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol was increased significantly in tumor-bearing nud

A dose-escalated radiation protocol of 10 × 4.0 Gy provides long-term local control in canine apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To obtain insights for establishing radiation therapy strategies that provide long-term locoregional benefits in canine apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma, we evaluated whether a dose-escalated protocol (10 × 4.0 Gy) could improve clinical outcomes, particularly long-term locoregional control, while maintaining acceptable toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included dogs with apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma treated with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy between September 2016 and September 2025. Dogs administered chemotherapy age

Dependence of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy on parathyroid hormone-related protein expression in the canine anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (CAC-8) nude mouse model.

Circulating parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is the primary humoral factor in dogs with spontaneous humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM) and adenocarcinomas derived from apocrine glands of the anal sac. A canine apocrine adenocarcinoma model of HHM in nude mice (CAC-8) was developed and characterized. After 32 passages in vivo, a spontaneous variant of the tumor (CAC-8 Lo Ca) that has altered cellular morphology and that fails to induce HHM in tumor-bearing nude mice has been discovered. The hypercalcemic and nonhypercalcemic tumor lines were compared by tumor weight, effect on

Retrospective Study Evaluating the Outcome and Efficacy of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for the Treatment of Metastatic Abdominal Lymph Nodes in Dogs With Apocrine Gland Anal Sac Adenocarcinoma.

Local treatment for dogs with regional lymph node metastasis secondary to apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma (AGASACA) includes nodal extirpation or radiotherapy. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) may provide a definitive intent treatment option for macroscopic nodal disease when surgery is declined or the disease is deemed inoperable. Twenty-five dogs receiving SBRT to the metastatic sacroiliac lymph nodes were retrospectively evaluated. Dogs were staged according to the previously published TNM staging system with 3 stage IIIa, 14 stage 3b, and 8 stage IV. The overall median sur

Minimal late radiation toxicity and transient early toxicity following postoperative definitive intent conformal radiation therapy (20 × 2.5 Gy) for canine apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma.

Postoperative radiation therapy (RT) may be beneficial for dogs with anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (ASAC). Clinically significant late toxicities have been reported in up to 65% of dogs with perianal tumors following non-conformal definitive RT, particularly when fractions of 3 Gy or higher are prescribed. The primary objective of this prospective, descriptive study was to evaluate tolerability of a novel 3D conformal RT (3DCRT) protocol in a group of dogs. Dogs with ASAC were prospectively enrolled if clients elected RT following surgery. The planning target volume was prescribed 50

Toward the Origin and Evolution of Unique Echiurid Excretory Organs: New Data From Females of Bonellia viridis.

Echiurids, as nonsegmented annelids, have an excretory system of a special organization. The excretory system of the echiuran worms is known to consist of ultrafiltration zones on blood vessels and anal sacs. Prior to this study, the fine structure of the anal sacs had been described in detail only for Thalassema thalassemum (Thalassematinae). In contrast, the more complex anal sacs of Bonelliinae, which contain additional structural elements such as tubules, remained unexplored. This study describes the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of the anal sacs of Bonellia viridis Rolando, 1822

Modified balloon-catheter-assisted closed anal sacculectomy in the dog: Description of surgical technique.

The aim of this report is to describe a modified Foley catheter technique for anal sacculectomy. A standard approach used for a closed anal sacculectomy was performed. The duct of the anal sac was then freed from the surrounding tissues and ligated. The duct was transected lateral to the ligature and a purse string suture placed. The anal sac balloon catheter was inserted through the duct into the anal sac and the purse string was tightened. Once inflated, the catheter was then used as a handle to facilitate manipulation and dissection of the anal sac from surrounding tissues. This technique p

Macro-anatomical, histological, and ultrastructural investigation of glandulae anales in Anatolian ground squirrels.

In this study, the anal glands of 10 adult Anatolian ground squirrels (Spermophilus xanthophrymnus) were examined through dissection, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and light microscopy. The anal glands consist of three independent complexes positioned ventrolaterally to the anus. These glandular complexes were connected with the anal canal, the rectum, and with each other through muscular and connective tissue layers coursing in multiple directions. Each anal gland complex consisted of a glandular component and a sac-like structure. The sac structures of the anal gland complexes, which c

Perianal pruritus in dogs with skin disease.

BACKGROUND: Perianal pruritus has been reported in dogs with anal sac disease but not in healthy dogs. Some authors describe it as typical of allergy, but there is little evidence in support of this. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate the association between perianal pruritus and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD), adverse food reaction (ARF) and other skin diseases in dogs. ANIMALS: Two hundred and fifty privately owned dogs with skin disease and without anal sac disease. METHODS: The presence or absence of perianal pruritus, macroscopic and cytological evaluation of the periana

How best to expose the entire surgical anal canal in the operative field during transanal pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease: a crucial step that determines success.

PURPOSE: During transanal pull-through (TAPT) for Hirschsprung's disease (HD), exposing the entire surgical anal canal (SAC) including the squamo-columnar junction, or anorectal line (ARL) is a crucial step for minimizing problematic postoperative bowel function. We present a hint for exposing the entire SAC. METHOD: Histologically, the ARL represents the junction of proximal unilayer columnar colorectal mucosa with distal stratified squamous epithelium and is the proximal limit of the SAC. It is an obvious landmark; proximal mucosa is vivid pink and distal mucosa is more whitish. We use the

Hypercalcaemia associated with a retroperitoneal apocrine gland adenocarcinoma in a dog.

A seven-year-old, entire female golden retriever was presented with a history of polyuria/polydipsia and progressive dysuria. Clinical examination, radiography and ultrasonography demonstrated urinary retention due to a large soft tissue mass in the retroperitoneal space. Laboratory findings revealed paraneoplastic hypercalcaemia. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass suggested an epithelial tumour, resembling an apocrine gland carcinoma of the anal sac. Following euthanasia and necropsy, the histopathological diagnosis of the retroperitoneal mass was apocrine gland adenocarcinoma. Despi

Parathyroid hormone-related protein in normal and neoplastic canine tissues: immunohistochemical localization and biochemical extraction.

Two polyclonal antibodies, directed against N-terminal amino acids (1-36) or the midregion (amino acids 34-53) of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), were used to localize PTHrP in a variety of normal and neoplastic canine tissues. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) immunoreactivity was demonstrated using anti-bovine PTH (amino acids 14-34). The following tissues (among others) stained strongly positive for PTHrP: all layers of epidermal keratinocytes, with the most intense staining of the basal layer; hair follicle keratinocytes; myoepithelial cells of dermal apocrine glands, mammary glands,

Primary clitoral adenocarcinoma with secondary hypercalcemia of malignancy in a dog.

This report describes a primary clitoral adenocarcinoma in a dog with secondary hypercalcemia of malignancy. A 10-year-old, spayed female basset hound was evaluated for a mass protruding from the vulva. The mass was excised, and a histological diagnosis of clitoral adenocarcinoma was made. No evidence of metastasis on thoracic radiographs or abdominal ultrasound was seen. Preoperative hypercalcemia resolved following excision of the mass. Cellular features were similar to an apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma, and immunohistochemistry exhibited features noted with apocrine gland anal sac a

Volatile compounds from anal glands of the wolverine, Gulo gulo.

Dichloromethane extracts of wolverine (Gulo gulo, Mustelinae, Mustelidae) anal gland secretion were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The secretion composition was complex and variable for the six samples examined: 123 compounds were detected in total, with the number per animal ranging from 45 to 71 compounds. Only six compounds were common to all extracts: 3-methylbutanoic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid, phenylacetic acid, alpha-tocopherol, cholesterol, and a compound tentatively identified as 2-methyldecanoic acid. The highly odoriferous thietanes and dithiolanes found in anal

Two cases of pseudoduplication of the external genitalia.

In two newborn boys an accessory rudimentary phallus and scrotal sacs were present on the surface of a midline perineal swelling. Both boys had an associated high anorectal anomaly (ARA), a small phallus, and a bifid scrotum with absence of the scrotal raphé. One also had penile torsion with hypospadias and an accessory anal dimple. During definitive surgery for the ARA in one patient, excision of the perineal soft-tissue mass and overlying duplicated penoscrotal tissue was performed. The embryogenesis of this condition is discussed.
