Supernumerary tendons of the abductor pollicis.

During a study of variants of the tendon of the abductor pollicis longus (APL) muscle, in 1 of 110 upper extremities prepared, we recorded the rare finding of a division of the APL muscle tendon into 7 sections in the first tunnel. Whereas the actual main tendon inserted at the base of the first metacarpal bone, as depicted in the textbooks, the supernumerary tendons attached to the fascia of the opponens pollicis muscle to the radial edge of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle and to the dorsoradial third of the base of the first metacarpal bone. All accessory tendons were arranged in a radia

Charcot and Cholesterin.

We offer here an observation written in 1866 by Jean-Martin Charcot, accompanied by drawings made during the autopsy of a patient who died of "cerebral softening." Focusing mainly on French medical progress at the time, our survey of the state of knowledge of cerebrovascular pathology indicates that Charcot completely explained the pathophysiology of cerebral infarction, describing the ulceration of an atheromatous plaque at the intima of an artery, on which a clot aggregates, blocks the vessel, or releases embolus downstream, causing cerebral ischemia and parenchymal lesions. Using the term "

[Leonardo da Vinci--a dyslectic genius?].

Leonardo da Vinci's texts consist almost exclusively of scientific notes. Working on a book on Leonardo's art, I studied all Leonardo's published texts carefully for any new information. In some prefaces I came to suspect that Leonardo might have suffered from dyslexia. This article considers the question of whether it is possible to find indications of dyslexia in Leonardo's texts and in the accounts of his life.

Report of a rare human variation: the superficial ulnar artery arising from the axillary artery.

A rare variation of the ulnar artery is presented on routine anatomical dissection in one male cadaver. The superficial ulnar artery was found to originate from the axillary artery. The free forearm flap is increasingly popular among plastic surgeons. As a result of this case, and a review of the literature to gain further knowledge of anatomical variations, it is advised that more attention should be paid clinically to this artery to prevent its injury.

Chronic neck pain.

The disorders most commonly seen in rheumatologic practice are acute to chronic cervical disc-related strains, radiculopathies, and degenerative spondylosis. Inflammatory disorders including ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis, although generally rare, are not uncommonly seen in a rheumatologic practice. The pertinent anatomic and pathologic features of cervical disorders are examined in the context of their implications for the hierarchy of specific therapeutic interventions. The basis for the usually favorable prognosis for these conditions, particularly in response to a rational

Early depiction of anterior spinal arteries and veins in André du Laurens's Historia anatomica humani corporis (1600).

Scholars usually consider the Historia anatomica corporis humani, published in 1600 by André du Laurens, as an obsolete defense of Galenic principles against the novelty of Vesalian material. Although du Laurens's book plagiarized many illustrations from Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (1543), critics such as Choulant insisted that the Historia's iconography had "no particular anatomical or artistic value." However, four of the Historia's engravings appear to be original. One of these, the Tabula hæc veram spinalis medullae et nervorum ab ea prodeuntium effigiem exprimit, is now famous f

3D Atlas of the Pituitary Gland of the Model Fish Medaka (Oryzias latipes).

In vertebrates, the anterior pituitary plays a crucial role in regulating several essential physiological processes via the secretion of at least seven peptide hormones by different endocrine cell types. Comparative and comprehensive knowledge of the spatial distribution of those endocrine cell types is required to better understand their physiological functions. Using medaka as a model and several combinations of multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization, we present the first 3D atlas revealing the gland-wide distribution of seven endocrine cell populations: lactotropes, thyrotropes, Lh

Autonomic innervation of the bovine testis.

The autonomic nerve supply of the bovine testis is investigated in animals of different ages by means of immunohistochemistry. Staining with antiserum to protein gene product 9.5 gives the most complete results for the study of the general innervation pattern. Autonomic nerves reach the testis by three different routes: with the blood vessels of the spermatic cord (funicular nervous contribution), by the mesorchium (mesorchial nervous contribution) and by the ligamentous bridge between epididymal tail and testis (caudal nervous contribution). The vessels of the spermatic cord are densely inner

Hysterosalpingography findings of leiomyomas and how they look in artistic eyes: new diagnostic signs.

Leiomyomas are benign lesions of the uterine smooth muscles that contain various amounts of fibrous connective tissue. Hystrosalpingography is not a method of diagnosing uterine fibroids, and other methods such as ultrasound and MRI are preferred, but during hystrosalpingography, especially in infertile females, uterine fibroids may be seen frequently. Leiomyomas have a wide range of appearances depending on their number, size and location. Leiomyomas may enlarge, elongate, displace, distort or rotate the uterine cavity and can be detected by such changes showing in hysterosalpingograms. These

The role of Adam Politzer (1835-1920) in the history of otology.

PURPOSE: To study and understand the contribution made by Adam Politzer (1835-1920) to 20th century otology and analyze his place in the history of otology. METHOD: A study of his four reference works, some of his hundreds of publications in medical journals, and diverse publications written about him. RESULTS: All areas of otology have been studied, compiled, and improved through his assorted publications, notably his atlas of otoscopy published in 1865, the first work of its kind, expanded and reedited in 1896; his 10 tables of the anatomy of the ear amended in 1873; his textbook of the di

Coexistence of rare arteries in the human celiaco-mesenteric system.

Some rare anomalies of the celiaco-mesenteric system were observed postmortem in a Japanese adult male: a) The left gastric, common hepatic, splenic and superior mesenteric arteries arose independently from the abdominal aorta. b) The anterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery of the superior mesenteric artery issued a hepatic artery which ascended along the anterior surface of the pancreas and gave off the right gastroepiploic, right gastric and cystic arteries. c) The common hepatic artery gave off an anastomosing branch to the superior mesenteric artery. d) The left gastric artery gave of

Muscles of the pelvic outlet in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) with special reference to nerve supply.

BACKGROUND: The manner of innervation of the muscles of the inferior limb, pelvic outlet, and tail in rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was investigated in detail in 11 pelvic halves of four males and two females. RESULTS: The origins of the pudendal nerve were widespread and overlapped the sacral plexus. After removal of the bone structures, detailed dissection revealed the origin of the pudendal nerve to ventrocaudally overlap the sacral plexus. This dorsoventral branching pattern between the sacral plexus and the pudendal nerve is similar to that in Urodela (Akita, 1992b), Lacertilia (Akita,

ART IN MEDICINE: A RETROSPECTIVE ON THE ANATOMICAL DRAWINGS OF CHARLES BELL.

Perhaps best known for his discovery of the eponymous syndrome 'Bell's Palsy', Charles Bell (1774-1842) made significant contributions to neuroscience, medical education and philosophy. Our aim was to examine his neuroanatomical drawings in the context of the era in which they were produced and their influence on future scholars. Emphasis is placed on analysing the artistic techniques employed and Bell's unique manner of conveying both structure and function. The images discussed include those featured in his book entitled The Anatomy of the Brain: Explained in a Series of Engravings. These im

Anterolateral approach to the V1 segment of the vertebral artery.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the normal anatomy, variations, and the surgical technique to expose and control the V1 segment of the vertebral artery (VA). METHODS: The VA V1 segment extends classically from the subclavian artery to the C6 transverse foramen. It courses obliquely upwards and posteriorly in the cervical fat tissue, at a distance of 5 to 10 mm from the C7 vertebral body. Along its course, the VA V1 segment is crossed by the inferior thyroid artery, the thoracic duct, and the sympathetic chain. For neurosurgeons, the safest approach is to expose the distal part of the V1 segment at the

Visual assessment of the placenta in antenatal magnetic resonance imaging across gestation in normal and compromised pregnancies: Observations from a large cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Visual assessment of the placenta in antenatal magnetic resonance imaging is important to confirm healthy appearances or to identify pathology complicating fetal anomaly or maternal disease. METHODS: We assessed the placenta in a large cohort of 228 women with low and high risk pregnancies across gestation. All women gave written informed consent and were imaged using either a 3T Philips Achieva or 1.5T Philips Ingenia scanner. Images were acquired with a T2-weighted single shot turbo spin echo sequence of the whole uterus (thereby including placenta) for anatomical information.

Neuroanatomy and volumes of brain structures of a live California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) from magnetic resonance images.

The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) has been a focal point for sensory, communication, cognition, and neurological disease studies in marine mammals. However, as a scientific community, we lack a noninvasive approach to investigate the anatomy and size of brain structures in this species and other free-ranging, live marine mammals. In this article, we provide the first anatomically labeled, magnetic resonance imaging-based atlas derived from a live marine mammal, the California sea lion. The brain of the California seal lion contained more secondary gyri and sulci than the brains
