Comparative anatomy of marmoset and mouse cortex from genomic expression.

Advances in mouse neural circuit genetics, brain atlases, and behavioral assays provide a powerful system for modeling the genetic basis of cognition and psychiatric disease. However, a critical limitation of this approach is how to achieve concordance of mouse neurobiology with the ultimate goal of understanding the human brain. Previously, the common marmoset has shown promise as a genetic model system toward the linking of mouse and human studies. However, the advent of marmoset transgenic approaches will require an understanding of developmental principles in marmoset compared to mouse. In

Chapter 2 Comparative anatomy and physiology of the corticospinal system.

The corticospinal tract provides the most direct pathway over which the cerebral cortex controls movement. In rodents and marsupials this influence is exerted largely upon interneurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal gray matter. However, ascending the phylogenetic scale through carnivores and primates, the number of corticospinal axons grows and corticospinal terminations shift progressively toward the interneurons of the intermediate zone and ventral horn, ultimately forming increasing numbers of synaptic terminations directly on the motoneurons themselves. Based on this phylogenetic trend,

Lumbar facet anatomy changes in spondylolysis: a comparative skeletal study.

UNLABELLED: Opinions differ as to the exact mechanism responsible for spondylolysis (SP) and whether individuals with specific morphological characteristics of the lumbar vertebral neural arch are predisposed to SP. The aim of our study was to reveal the association between SP and the architecture of lumbar articular facets and the inter-facet region. METHODS: Using a Microscribe three-dimensional apparatus (Immersion Co., San Jose, CA, USA), length, width and depth of all articular facets and all inter-facet distances in the lumbar spine (L1-L5) were measured. From the Hamann-Todd Human Oste

Ultrasound and analysis of the deformation patterns of the masseter muscle: comparing surgical anatomy, ultrasound and functional anatomy.

PURPOSE: We have tried to demonstrate whether the analysis of the muscle strain allows us to identify the three distinct functional areas of the architecture of the masseter, as one would see them by performing or viewing an anatomical dissection of said muscle, and whether these sections have behave differently in terms of origin and coping of the strain they face (quantitative analysis). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This work has been elaborated by the use of an ultrasound machine (MicrUs ext-1H Telemed Medical Systems Milano) and a linear probe (L12-5l40S-3 5-12 MHz 40 mm) which allowed us to re

[Contributions of embryology and comparative anatomy for teaching of cranial nerves].

Some authors propose a global approach, including imaging, to describe cranial nerves from a clinical point of view. If we can agree to a certain extent with this proposal, we consider that the use of a medical point of view can neglect histological and embryological features which contribute to a better understanding of nerve function. For example, it is false to consider totally "nerves" I and II as "sensory cranial nerves". They are not true nerves, but derive manly from direct expansions of the central nervous system. They differ fundamentally from cranial nerves, except for the fibers pre

Comparative anatomy of the claustrum in selected species: A morphometric analysis.

The morphology of the claustrum was studied by stereological methods in representatives of five mammalian orders (Insectivora, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Carnivora and Primates). In each species under study, a dorsal and a ventral part of the nucleus can be distinguished. Based on differences in shape and separation from surrounding structures, five morphological types of the claustrum occur. The claustrum of Insectivora and some rodents represents the least complicated morphological type. The nucleus is very poorly separated from the surrounding structures. The human claustrum is morphologically t

Preservation of Porcine Biomodels for the Study of Comparative Human Anatomy.

The teaching of human anatomy in medical education faces challenges, necessitating effective alternatives for students to practically explore anatomical complexity. Porcine biomodels, with their anatomical similarities to humans, offer a promising solution. This article presents a detailed protocol for preserving porcine biomodels, addressing the need for accessible and efficient methods in comparative anatomy studies. This protocol proposes the use of a modified Chilean solution for biomodel preservation, employing formalinization techniques through repletion and immersion. Subsequently, defo

Comparative anatomy of the macaque and the human frontal oculomotor domain.

In non-human primates, at the junction of the prefrontal with the premotor cortex, there is a sector designated as frontal eye field (FEF), involved in controlling oculomotor behavior and spatial attention. Evidence for at least two FEFs in humans is at the basis of the still open issue of the possible homologies between the macaque and the human frontal oculomotor system. In this review article we address this issue suggesting a new view solidly grounded on evidence from the last decade showing that, in macaques, the FEF is at the core of an oculomotor domain in which several distinct areas,

Brachial plexus anatomy in the miniature swine as compared to human.

Brachial plexus injury (BPI) occurs when the brachial plexus is compressed, stretched, or avulsed. Although rodents are commonly used to study BPI, these models poorly mimic human BPI due to the discrepancy in size. The objective of this study was to compare the brachial plexus between human and Wisconsin Miniature SwineTM (WMSTM ), which are approximately the weight of an average human (68-91 kg), to determine if swine would be a suitable model for studying BPI mechanisms and treatments. To analyze the gross anatomy, WMS brachial plexuses were dissected both anteriorly and posteriorly. For hi

An approach to comparative anatomy of the acetabulum from amphibians to primates.

The objective of this study was to investigate the anatomy, both macroscopic and microscopic, of the soft tissue internal structures of the hip joint in animal species and in three human hips (an adult and two fetuses). We dissected the hip joints of 16 species and compared the anatomical features of the soft tissue from the respective acetabula. In addition, a histological study was made of the specimens studied. In amphibians, we found a meniscus in the acetabulum, which was not observed in any of the other species studied. The isolated round ligament is observed from birds onwards. In the g

Comparative anatomy of the locus coeruleus in humans and nonhuman primates.

The locus coeruleus (LC) is a dense cluster of neurons that projects axons throughout the neuroaxis and is located in the rostral pontine tegmentum extending from the level of the inferior colliculus to the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. LC neurons are lost in the course of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In this study we used Nissl staining and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity to compare the human LC with that of closely related primate species, including great and lesser apes, and macaque monkeys. TH catalyzes the initial

Comparative anatomy and ontogeny of the ductus arteriosus, a vascular outsider.

In its function of separating pulmonary and systemic arterial blood flow, the ductus arteriosus, which connects both circuits, either closes permanently at a certain stage in development or attains a capacity to close and reopen depending on the physiological needs in certain species. In air-breathing vertebrates varying from lungfish to mammals, the ductus arteriosus derives from the sixth pharyngeal arch artery, and in preparation for its specific task, undergoes its own unique differentiation programme, starting early in development. To date, the mechanisms involved in defining this unique

Retention of skull anatomy knowledge in dental education: a comparative study.

There is limited evidence regarding the retention of essential basic science knowledge among dental students and professionals. Understanding the anatomy of the skull, osteology, is crucial as it provides the structural framework essential for comprehending head anatomy, where various soft tissue components are organized. This study aims to evaluate and compare the retention of osteological knowledge across different stages of dental education and professional practice. Specific anatomical structures on selected skull bones and the complete cranium, taught at the pre-clinical level and includi

Comparative evaluation of canine cadaver embalming methods for veterinary anatomy education.

Formalin-embalmed cadavers have been extensively used to teach anatomy. Although they ensure the preservation of anatomical structures without microbial contamination, they are considerably rigid and cannot be used to study the joint and muscle movements. Moreover, formalin irritates the eyes and airways and is carcinogenic on chronic exposure. To overcome the disadvantages of formalin-fixed cadavers, we investigated the usefulness of alternative embalming methods using saturated salt solution (SS) and Thiel's solution (TS). We compared the three solutions based on the following parameters: co

Skull 5 from Dmanisi: Descriptive anatomy, comparative studies, and evolutionary significance.

A fifth hominin skull (cranium D4500 and mandible D2600) from Dmanisi is massively constructed, with a large face and a very small brain. Traits documented for the first time in a basal member of the Homo clade include the uniquely low ratio of endocranial volume to basicranial width, reduced vertex height, angular vault profile, smooth nasal sill coupled with a long and sloping maxillary clivus, elongated palate, and tall mandibular corpus. The convex clivus and receding symphysis of skull 5 produce a muzzle-like form similar to that of Australopithecus afarensis. While the Dmanisi cranium is

Elephant brain. Part I: gross morphology, functions, comparative anatomy, and evolution.

We report morphological data on brains of four African, Loxodonta africana, and three Asian elephants, Elephas maximus, and compare findings to literature. Brains exhibit a gyral pattern more complex and with more numerous gyri than in primates, humans included, and in carnivores, but less complex than in cetaceans. Cerebral frontal, parietal, temporal, limbic, and insular lobes are well developed, whereas the occipital lobe is relatively small. The insula is not as opercularized as in man. The temporal lobe is disproportionately large and expands laterally. Humans and elephants have three par

The elusive scleral cartilages: Comparative anatomy and development in teleosts and avians.

The sclera of all vertebrate eyes is comprised of connective tissue, with some organisms developing cartilage within this tissue. A review of the cartilages that have been described in the vertebrate sclera and their anatomical relationships is discussed together with their potential homology. Incorrect terminology erroneously implies similarity in location, development, morphology, and evolution, which may lead some scientists to assume all cartilages in orbit are the same elements when reading the literature. Therefore, new terminology to distinguish the different types of cartilage associat

Comparative anatomy and 3D geometric morphometrics of the El Sidrón atlases (C1).

The first cervical vertebra (atlas, C1) is an important element of the vertebral column because it connects the cranial base with the cervical column, thus helping to maintain head posture and contributing to neck mobility. However, few atlases are preserved in the fossil record because of the fragility of this vertebra. Consequently, only eight well-preserved atlases from adult Neandertals have been recovered and described. Here, we present nine new atlas remains from the El Sidrón Neandertal site (Asturias, Spain), two of which (SD-1643 and SD-1605/1595) are sufficiently well preserved to al
