Photopic pupil size, foveal anatomy and emmetropisation: a cross-sectional study in adult eyes.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between photopic pupil size, refractive state and foveal anatomy in healthy adults, in the context of emmetropisation and myopia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this cross-sectional study, pupil sizes were recorded in 80 healthy adults (28±8 years/55 women) using a custom-built high-resolution pupil tracker (0.03 mm/pixel). Daylight lamps provided two high-luminance conditions (6.5k and 10k cd/m²). Objective refraction and axial length were measured, and additionally high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) was applied to record retinal volume sc

Computed tomography and cross-sectional anatomy of the thorax of the live bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Pulmonary disease is one of the leading causes of cetacean morbidity and mortality in the wild and in managed collections. The purpose of this study was to present the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the thorax of the live bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) out-of-water and to describe the technical and logistical parameters involved in CT image acquisition in this species. Six thoracic CT evaluations of four conscious adult bottlenose dolphins were performed between April 2007 and May 2012. Animals were trained to slide out of the water onto foam pads and were transported in cove

Is intraorbital fat extraorbital? Results of cross-sectional anatomy of the lower eyelid fat pads.

BACKGROUND: Prominent fat pads of the lower eyelids are a frequent complaint prompting patients to seek cosmetic surgery. Previous studies have stated that these fat pads exist as three compartments in the lower eyelids. An accepted anatomic concept is that these lower eyelid fat pads are intraorbital. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the possibility of distinct compartments of lower eyelid fat pads not being different from each other, but rather being separate from posterior intraorbital fat. METHODS: This study used eight hemifacial cadaver dissections. Methylene blue injections were used t

Characterizing superficial cerebral cortical venous anatomy for endovascular device implantation: a cross-sectional imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular electronic devices, including brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), offer a minimally invasive approach to diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. Implanting BCIs in superficial cortical veins, owing to their proximity to sensorimotor cortices, may improve motor function restoration. However, marked anatomical variability and the complex anteriorly directed connection with the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) complicate device navigation. This exploratory study aimed to characterize cortical venous anatomy to inform device design and procedural planning. METHODS: Re

Cross-sectional anatomy and comparative ultrasonography of the equine medial femorotibial joint and its related structures.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Injuries of the equine stifle are frequent causes of hindlimb lameness. Ultrasonography is useful for the diagnosis of many soft tissue lesions but, until recently, its application to the equine stifle has been limited to a description of normal and abnormal structures. A comparative study using gross anatomical sections to identify all structures visible on ultrasonographic images of the equine stifle has not previously been reported. OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive comparative cross-sectional atlas of the normal equine medial femorotibial (MFT) joint and

Three-Dimensional Modeling and Extended Reality Simulations of the Cross-Sectional Anatomy of the Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Brainstem.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the anatomy of the human cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem and their 3-dimensional (3D) relationships is critical for neurosurgery. Although 3D photogrammetric models of cadaver brains and 2-dimensional images of postmortem brain slices are available, neurosurgeons lack free access to 3D models of cross-sectional anatomy of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem that can be simulated in both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). OBJECTIVE: To create 3D models and AR/VR simulations from 2-dimensional images of cross-sectionally dissected cadaveric specim

Cross Sectional Analysis of Eurasian Skull Anatomy for 3D Cephalometry-Normative Data Reveal Four Different Skull Types.

The unsolved problem in three-dimensional surgical planning for patients with facial deformity, dysgnathia, or asymmetry is the lack of a normative database of "norm skulls" that can be used as treatment objectives. A study was conducted on 90 Eurasian persons (46 male and 44 female adults) for whom cone beam-computed tomography images were available. Inclusion criteria were adult patients with a skeletal Class I pattern, proper interincisal relationship with normal occlusion, the absence of an open bite both in the anterior and posterior region, and a normal and balanced facial appearance; pa

Descriptive MRI-based morphometry of pediatric knee bony anatomy: cross-sectional age-related patterns of patellofemoral and tibiofemoral measures.

Age- and size-related variation in pediatric knee bony morphology is incompletely described on clinically indicated magnetic resonance images (MRI). These metrics vary with growth and influence evaluation of patellofemoral instability and tibiofemoral biomechanics. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, reference cohort knee MRI from patients aged 1-18 years was screened; 160 examinations (70 male, 90 female) without structural pathology were included. Three observers measured tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, trochlear morphology, intercondylar notch and tibial eminence
