Gross anatomy is considered one of the most challenging subjects in teaching veterinary medicine. The use of body painting is reported in teaching surface human anatomy, but such reports are scarce in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to describe a practical session for teaching surface anatomy using body painting with second-semester students of veterinary medicine. Two practical sessions using live animals (equine and bovine) were offered with a focus on the locomotor and nervous systems and splanchnology. Students believed that the body painting sessions helped them to understa

In Brazil, with the creation of the Arouca Law in 2009 and the need for substitutes for live animals in studies, it is essential to apply anatomical techniques to conserve corpses. Fixative substances prevent autolysis, facilitate incisions and make the protein fraction of the tissue insoluble, preserving its morphology due to antiseptic properties. Preservative solutions aim to maintain anatomical specimens intact to allow the long-lasting use of them. Several techniques can promote such fixation and preservation, but formaldehyde is the most used in many countries. This research aims to dete

This study aimed to describe the termination of the conus medullaris (CM) and dural sac (DS) in sheep using computed tomography (CT) myelography. Forty-adult Merino-mixed sheep underwent CT imaging after a lumbosacral intrathecal injection of iodinated contrast. The vertebral level of CM and DS termination was recorded. The CM was visible in 28 animals and terminated at S1 in 14 (50 %; 95 % CI: 30.6-69.4 %) and at S2 in 14 (50 %; 95 % CI: 30.6-69.4 %). The DS was evaluable in 33 animals and ended caudal to the sacrococcygeal junction (Cd-SC) in 31 (93.9 %; 95 % CI: 79.8-99.3 %) and at the sacr

Three-dimensional (3D)-printed models have been shown to improve medical students' understanding of anatomy and related fractures. The aim of this parallel-group randomized trial was to evaluate the impact of 3D-printed feline skulls, in addition to traditional teaching, on veterinary students' interpretation of skull radiographs. Students were randomly divided into two groups (2D, 3D) and underwent a pre-test consisting of multiple-choice questions. Subsequently, both groups watched a recorded lesson on feline skull radiographic anatomy and traumatic lesions, and then the 3D group was provide

Different modalities such as lectures, dissections, 3D models, and online learning are used for teaching anatomy. To date, online learning has been considered a useful additional didactic tool. This study aimed to compare veterinary students' performance in radiographic anatomy (radio-anatomy) after online or classroom-based teaching to assess the extent to which the two methods were interchangeable. Three strategies were compared in a cohort of 83 learners. Students were committed to online learning only, online learning with the use of specimen equine bones, or learning on conventional radio

The broad ligament is a double fold of peritoneum forming a mesentery for the human female genital tract. We investigated the anatomy of the broad ligament in different species and its hormonal regulation to determine if it had a role in gonadal positioning. The medical and veterinary literature was reviewed for descriptions of broad ligament anatomy and development. In addition, four adult female rats were dissected to compare the macroscopic anatomy of the broad ligament with any homologous structures in the male (n = 2). Detailed review was made of human males with persistent Müllerian duct

Complex vascular anomalies are often difficult concepts for veterinary medical students to comprehend, as knowledge of normal anatomy, visualization of the abnormal anatomy, and understanding of the physiologic implications of that abnormality are all required to appreciate the clinical impacts of the anomaly. Access to interactive 3D models of both the normal and abnormal vasculatures may improve student comprehension. In this study, third-year veterinary medical students in a core small animal digestive diseases course completed a pre-lecture assignment consisting of a text-only narrative (n

Radiographic assessment of the temporomandibular joint in the domestic cat using conventional radiographic views can be challenging due to superimposition of overlying structures and the complex anatomy of the skull. The use of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and cone beam computed tomography to assess the temporomandibular joint in the cat has increased, but these modalities are not always available in general veterinary practices. Conventional radiography is still commonly used for first line assessment of the temporomandibular joint. The aim of this preliminary study was to

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most important orthopedic diseases taught to veterinary undergraduates. The complexity of the anatomy of the canine stifle joint combined with the plethora of different surgical interventions available for the treatment of the disease means that undergraduate veterinary students often have a poor understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of CCL rupture. We designed, developed, and tested a three dimensional (3D) animation to illustrate the pertinent clinical anatomy of the stifle joint, the effects of CCL rupture, and the mechanism

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2018eng
High field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used for horses with suspected stifle disease, however there is limited available information on normal imaging anatomy and potential incidental findings. The aim of this prospective, anatomic study was to develop an optimized high field MRI protocol for evaluation of the equine stifle and provide detailed descriptions of the normal MRI appearance of the stifle soft tissues, using ultrasound and gross pathological examination as comparison tests. Nine cadaver limbs were acquired from clinically normal horses. Stifles were evaluated ul

Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well-studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species-specific topology. Our study aims to provide a consolidated list and description of the vertebral muscles in wild rabbits. Wild European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) are also included in this study as they have a similar bauplan, albeit different locomotive b

The endocrine system of birds is comparable to that of mammals, although there are many unique aspects to consider when studying the anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Avian endocrinology is a field of veterinary medicine that is unfamiliar to many practitioners; however, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding when evaluating companion birds in clinical practice. This article covers the anatomy and physiology of the normal avian, and readers are referred to other articles for a more detailed explanation of altered physiology and pathology.

Knowledge of the radiographic anatomy of rodent skulls is essential for accurately interpreting extra-oral radiographs, a non-invasive diagnostic tool commonly used in veterinary practice. Due to the complexity of the skull and the potential for distortion in two-dimensional views, a systematic evaluation of anatomical structures is necessary. This study identifies the most clinically relevant anatomical landmarks on standard extra-oral radiographic views of the skull and mandible in various rodent species, including a cane rat, two woodchucks, and seven common mole rats. Specimens were evalua

Computed tomography (CT) has become an essential diagnostic and educational tool in veterinary medicine; however, accurate interpretation relies on precise knowledge of normal cross-sectional anatomy. This study aimed to develop a detailed anatomical atlas of the feline thorax and abdomen by correlating cross-sectional anatomical slices with contrast-enhanced CT images and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions. Ten adult domestic cats of both sexes were used. Five cats were serially sectioned at defined thoracic and abdominal levels, and the sections were examined in both fresh and fixed stat

The integration of three-dimensional (3D) and augmented reality (AR) technologies into anatomy education facilitates broader access to anatomical content and enhances learner motivation and cognitive engagement by enabling interactive, spatially rich exploration of complex structures. However, high costs, technical complexity, and restricted access to specialized imaging equipment and software often hinder adoption of these digital anatomy tools. This study aimed to develop a smartphone-LiDAR-assisted photogrammetry workflow for generating low-cost, accessible and realistic 3D models for anato

BACKGROUND: Advanced diagnostic imaging is an essential part of preoperative planning for oral and maxillofacial surgery in veterinary patients. 3-dimensional (3D) printed models and surgical guides generated from diagnostic imaging can provide a deeper understanding of the complex maxillofacial anatomy, including relevant spatial relationships. Additionally, patient-specific 3D printed models allow surgeons and trainees to better examine anatomical features through tactile and visuospatial feedback allowing for improved preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, and enhanced trainee educ

Military and law enforcement agencies have seen a dramatic increase in the utilization of working canines both at home and in foreign deployments. Due to the fact that professional veterinary care is sometimes distant from internal disaster or foreign deployment sites, the military medic, police tactical medic, or other first-response medical care provider may be charged with providing emergency or even basic, non-emergency veterinary care to working canines. (Editor's Note: Military veterinary detachments are collocated next to the major human treatment facilities in a deployment environment.

The aim of this paper is to define the endoscopic bronchial anatomy of the cat and to adapt these findings to the bronchoscopic nomenclature previously described for the dog by Amis and McKiernan (Amis TC, McKiernan BC (1986) Systematic identification of endobronchial anatomy during bronchoscopy in the dog. American Journal of Veterinary Research 47(12), 2649-2657). In this study, the normal endoscopic bronchial anatomy was identified based on analysis of 10 air-dried feline lungs, two euthanased and eight healthy anesthetized cats using either a rigid or a flexible endoscope. Coronary artery anomalies have been reported in Bulldogs and present an increased risk when performing balloon valvuloplasty. Identification of coronary anomalies has been reported using multidetector-row computed tomographic (MDCT) angiography with electrocardiographic gating. However, the utility of non-electrocardiographic-gated 16-row computed tomographic for MDCT for the identification of coronary artery anatomy or anomalies to the authors' knowledge has not been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of non-electrocardiographic-gated computed tomogr
