The effects of anesthesia on measures of nerve conduction velocity in male C57Bl6/J mice.

Animal models, particularly mice, are used extensively to investigate neurological diseases. Basic research regarding animal models of human neurological disease requires that the animals exhibit hall mark characteristics of the disease. These include disease specific anatomical, metabolic and behavioral changes. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is the predominant method used to assess peripheral nerve health. Normative data adjusted for age, gender and height is available for human patients; however, these data are not available for most rodents including mice. NCV may be affected by animal ag

[Conductive-capsular anesthesia in surgery of long tubular bones of the distal segments of the extremities].

The conductive-capsular anesthesia was used in 31 patients in operations on distal segments of extremities. The anesthesia was achieved by injection of 0.5% solution of novocain which is introduced into muscular capsules of the proximal segment of the extremity between two parallel tourniquets. Effective regional anesthesia took place in all the cases lower than the tourniquet. No complications were noted in the postoperative period.

Clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of the developed method of conductive anesthesia of the facial branches of great auricular nerve.

INTRODUCTION: The most common method of local anesthesia of maxillofacial region in the modern surgical practice is conductive anesthesia of the peripheral branches of trigeminal nerve. In order to reach the total anesthesia of the lateral facial region it is necessary to block not only auriculo-temporal and buccal nerves, but also facial branches of great auricular nerve taking part in the innervation of parotid-masticatory area and the part of the cheek. Topographic-anatomical investigations of corpses revealed the anatomical variability of the branching of great auricular nerve on the neck

Conducting Prolonged General Anesthesia without Intravenous Access in a Child with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Children with chronic medical conditions often need multiple intravenous (IV) access instances during their hospitalizations, both peripheral and central. Obtaining a working IV in this patient population undergoing general anesthesia can be challenging. In our case report, we describe a method of administering general anesthesia in an infant with partially repaired hypoplastic left heart syndrome without IV access.

Comparative evaluation of anesthetic efficacy of Gow-Gates mandibular conduction anesthesia, Vazirani-Akinosi technique, buccal-plus-lingual infiltrations, and conventional inferior alveolar nerve anesthesia in patients with irreversible pulpitis.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) has a poor success rate in inflamed pulps. Three alternative techniques of providing anesthesia to mandibular molars were evaluated and compared with conventional IANB. STUDY DESIGN: Ninety-seven adult volunteer subjects, actively experiencing pain, participated in this prospective, randomized, double-blinded study. Twenty-five patients received Gow-Gates mandibular conduction block anesthesia, 24 patients received "high" Vazirani-Akinosi inferior alveolar nerve block, 26 received only buccal-plus-lingual infiltrations, and 22 patie

A Nonrandomized Comparative Study of the Warming Effects of Conductive-Polymer Heating Devices in Patients Undergoing Cesarean Delivery With Spinal Anesthesia.

Maintaining normothermia during surgery is crucial to prevent perioperative hypothermia. This nonrandomized study of 70 patients undergoing cesarean delivery with spinal anesthesia compared the effectiveness of conductive-polymer heating devices (CPHDs) in maintaining temperatures and enhancing thermal comfort. Core and peripheral temperatures were recorded, and thermal comfort was assessed. Patients who were warmed with a CPHD blanket and those warmed with a CPHD blanket and a CPHD mattress reported significantly higher thermal comfort and had higher core temperatures (P < .01) than those war

[Annual report of perioperative mortality and morbidity for the year 2000 at certified training hospitals of Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists: with a special reference to anesthetic methods--report of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Operating Room Safety].

The Committee on Operating Room Safety of Japan Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA) sends annually confidential questionnaires of perioperative mortality and morbidity (cardiac arrest, severe hypotension, severe hypoxia) to Certified Training Hospitals of JSA. This report is a special reference to anesthetic methods in perioperative mortality and morbidity in 2000. Five hundreds and twenty hospitals reported perioperative mortality and morbidity referred to anesthetic methods and total numbers of reported cases were 910,007. The percentage of cases reported by each anesthetic method was as foll

[Choice of anesthesia in gunshot wounds of extremities].

The analysis of treatment of 452 victims with wounds of extremities for the period from 1984 to 1994 years was carried out. 171 patients had fire-arm wounds in local conflicts. Surgical wound management in 43% of victims was carried out under local infiltration anesthesia, in 28.3%--under conduction and prolonged conduction anesthesia, 27.8%--under general anesthesia and in 0.9%--under intraosseal anesthesia. The author suggests that as the gravity of firearm wound increases and wound infection progresses, the indications for infiltration and intraosseal anesthesia should be limited. In multip

Anesthetically blocked optic nerve conduction in congenital stationary night blindness.

It has been hypothesized that the negative configuration of the electroretinogram (ERG) in congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) may change to a positive configuration following loss of the inhibitory function of the optic nerve centrifugal fibers. In order to study this hypothesis, the ERGs before and after blocking optic nerve conduction by retrobulbar anesthesia were recorded in a patient with CSNB, who had retinal breaks and was being treated with cryopexy under retrobulbar anesthesia. After complete blockade of the optic nerve conduction induced by retrobulbar anesthesia, the ERG s

[Transient right bundle branch block during anesthesia].

Transient right bundle branch block occasionally occurs under anesthesia. We report a case of heart rate dependent right bundle branch block during sevoflurane anesthesia. A 74-year-old man was scheduled for partial hepatectomy. Past medical history was unremarkable, and preoperative electrocardiogram showed no conduction abnormalities. Operation was performed with epidural and general anesthesia. Five hours after induction of general anesthesia, complete right bundle branch block (CRBBB) occurred gradually without any hemodynamic changes. Although CRBBB persisted in his electrocardiogram (ECG

Successful epidural anesthesia in a patient with an arachnoid cyst, preeclampsia, and triplets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Arachnoid cysts are a frequent finding on magnetic resonance imaging; however, the use of major conduction anesthesia in patients with these cysts has not been reported. METHODS: Epidural anesthesia was used in a parturient with a triplet pregnancy preeclampsia, and a documented arachnoid cyst extending from TII to LI. RESULTS: Epidural anesthesia was successfully used in this high-risk patient, and airway manipulation, which would have been difficult in this patient, was thereby avoided. CONCLUSIONS: Arachnoid cysts are not a contraindication to major conduction

Multi-Unit and Multi-Path system of the neural network can explain the steep dose-response of MAC.

PURPOSE: The slope of the dose-response curves of inhalation anesthetics is steep around the minimum alveolar concentration of inhalation anesthetics (MAC) value. Contrastingly, the anesthetic dose-response curves of ion channels and enzymes are gradual. This discrepancy in the steepness may be a key to solve the mechanisms of anesthesia. To explain the steepness we propose a mathematical model of the neural network related to MAC. METHODS: We assumed that, in order to show movement in response to a noxious stimulus, a signal needed to be transmitted from A to B. There are m conduction pathwa

[Indications for central versus peripheral regional anesthesia].

Serious neurological complications caused by spinal hematoma or abscess following central neuraxial block have been reported more often during the last years. In contrast, severe complications are extremely rare associated with peripheral nerve blocks. Concerned about the safety of spinal and epidural anesthesia, we encourage the use of peripheral regional techniques for procedures on the lower extremity and especially for postoperative regional analgesia. Motor block due to lumbar epidural anaesthesia using high concentrations of local anesthetic makes spinal hematoma or abscess difficult to
