Cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis.

Bacillary angiomatosis is characterized by unique vascular lesions caused by infection with a small Gram staining bacillus of the genus Bartonella. It usually occurs in immunocompromised persons but can also occur in immunocompetent persons. We report a case of cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis in a 5-year-old immunocompetent child. He had infected lesions on the lips, after an injury, which was followed by lesions over the knees, buttocks, near the ankles and the elbows. Diagnosis was proved on histology. The lesions cleared after administration of erythromycin for 3 months. It is well to be a

The epidemiology of bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine environmental risk factors for bacillary angiomatosis-bacillary peliosis (BAP), and to confirm infection with Rochalimaea species. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Community and university hospitals and clinics. PATIENTS: Case patients (N = 48) had biopsy-confirmed BAP. Controls (N = 94) were matched to patients by institution and by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serological status. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical information was obtained from medical records. Subjects were queried about environmental exposures. Univariate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confide

Bacillary angiomatosis of the spleen.

Bacillary angiomatosis is a recently described vasoproliferative lesion associated with infection by a newly characterized rickettsial organism, Rochalimaea henselae. Most previous reports have described skin lesions in immunocompromised patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus. This is the first case report detailing the features of bacillary angiomatosis of the spleen occurring in a patient undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy for disseminated ovarian carcinoma.

Bacillary angiomatosis of the conjunctiva.

A 70-year-old man had unilateral congestion of the right upper eyelid, which contained a nodular mass. A biopsy was performed, and histologic, immunocytochemical, and ultrastructural studies disclosed a pseudoneoplastic proliferation of endothelial cells and pericytes in a region containing clumps of bacteria. This combination of histologic features is characteristic of bacillary angiomatosis, which has been described in the skin, particularly in association with immunodeficient states, especially acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, but not in the conjunctiva. A second biopsy contained a diffu

Bacillary Angiomatosis Mimicking Pyogenic Granuloma.

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is an angioproliferative disease caused by Bartonella species. It manifests as nodules or papules in immunocompromised patients. Oral lesions are very rare, unlike cutaneous lesions, and histopathology plays a vital role in distinguishing these lesions from other similar ones. Treatment mainly comprises macrolides erythromycin, clarithromycin, or doxycycline.

Bacillary angiomatosis with bone invasion.

Bacillary angiomatosis is an infection determined by Bartonella henselae and B. quintana, rare and prevalent in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We describe a case of a patient with AIDS and TCD4+ cells equal to 9/mm3, showing reddish-violet papular and nodular lesions, disseminated over the skin, most on the back of the right hand and third finger, with osteolysis of the distal phalanx observed by radiography. The findings of vascular proliferation with presence of bacilli, on the histopathological examination of the skin and bone lesions, led to the diagnosis of bacillary an

Bacillary angiomatosis in immunocompromised patients.

OBJECTIVES: To report seven cases of bacillary angiomatosis; to evaluate the most useful diagnostic tools; to analyse the clinical and epidemiological features associated with Bartonella quintana or Bartonella henselae infections. DESIGN: Clinical, diagnostic and epidemiological evaluation of 37 speciated bacillary angiomatosis cases in the literature, including the seven patients in our study. METHODS: Pathological examination of tissue samples, including Warthin-Starry staining and immunohistology; titre of antibodies to Bartonella sp.; detection of Bartonella sp. in blood and biopsy mater

Muscular bacillary angiomatosis in AIDS.

We describe an unusual case of bacillary angiomatosis first misdiagnosed as Kaposi's sarcoma in muscle in a patient with HIV infection.

Kaposi's sarcoma versus bacillary angiomatosis.

Persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are subject to a host of pathologic entities secondary to a depressed immune system. Kaposi's sarcoma frequently presents in this immunocompromised population and, therefore, diagnosis seems clinically straightforward. However, because of the prevalence of a strikingly similar infectious disease known as bacillary angiomatosis, skin biopsy of one or more lesions is crucial.
