Anguilla anguilla intestinal immune response to natural infection with Contracaecum rudolphii A larvae.

The European eel, Anguilla anguilla, is a major warm-water fish species cultured in North and South Europe. Seventy-one A. anguilla collected between 2010 and 2015 from the Comacchio lagoons were examined. Fish were infected and damaged by larvae (L3) of the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii A, which were encapsulated within the thickness of the intestinal wall and within the external visceral peritoneum (serosa). Conspicuous granulomas, visible at sites of infection, were arranged in a trilayer, formed by a series of concentric whorls. The cells involved in the immune response and their distrib

Hypertonicity stimulates Cl(-) transport in the intestine of fresh water acclimated eel, Anguilla anguilla.

Eel intestinal epithelium when bathed symmetrically with normal Ringer solution develops a net Cl(-) current (short circuit current, Isc) giving rise to a negative transepithelial potential (Vt) at the basolateral side of the epithelium, lower in fresh-water (FW)-acclimated animals with respect to sea-water (SW). The aim of the present work was to study the cell response to hypertonic stress of FW eel intestinal epithelium in relation to Cl(-) absorption. The hypertonicity of the external bathing solutions produced first a transient increase of Vt and Isc, then followed (after 10-15 min) by a

The distribution of GABA-immunoreactive neurons in the brain of the silver eel (Anguilla anguilla L.).

The distribution of GABA-immunoreactivity was studied in the brain of the silver eel (Anguilla anguilla) by means of antibodies directed against GABA. Immunoreactive neuronal somata were distributed throughout the brain. Positive perikarya were detected in the internal cellular layer of the olfactory bulb, and in all divisions of the telencephalon, the highest density being observed along the midline. Numerous GABA-reactive cell bodies were found in the diencephalon, particularly in the preoptic and tuberal regions of the hypothalamus, and the dorsolateral, dorsomedial and ventromedial thalami

First evidence for a direct inhibitory effect of kisspeptins on LH expression in the eel, Anguilla anguilla.

The kisspeptin system has emerged as one of the main puberty gatekeepers among vertebrates. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a remarkable model due to its phylogenetical position at the basis of teleosts, and its unique life cycle with a blockade of puberty before reproductive migration. We cloned the full-length coding sequence of a kisspeptin receptor (Kissr) in the eel. Comparison of Kissr sequences assigned the eel Kissr to a basal position in a clade including most of the known teleost Kissr, in agreement with the eel phylogenetical position. Eel Kissr tissue distribution was analy

Isolation and molecular characterization of herpesvirus from cultured European eels Anguilla anguilla in Taiwan.

A herpesvirus has been isolated for the first time from a population of European eels Anguilla anguilla cultured in a recirculated system in Taiwan. Syncytia formation was detected in EP-1 (eel epidermis) cell cultures inoculated with cell-free homogenates prepared from both integument and visceral organs of moribund fish. Inoculation of homogenates onto EK (eel kidney) cell cultures induced giant cell formation. Subsequent passages produced a consistent and progressive cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell cultures. In this study, EP-1 cell cultures infected with EEHV (European eel herpesvirus) wer

Mediation of serotonin-induced hyperventilation via 5-HT3-receptor in European eel Anguilla anguilla.

The effects of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) on ventilation were investigated by continuous measurements of intrabuccal pressure in unrestrained eel. Intravenous administration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (30 micrograms.kg-1) caused a large increase in ventilatory frequency (+ 100%) and amplitude (+ 140%). The 5-hydroxytryptamine-induced hyperventilation was blocked by the 5-HT3-receptor antagonists metoclopramide (1.0 mg.kg-1) or MDL72222 (1.0 mg.kg-1), and was insensitive to the 5-HT1/2-receptor antagonist methysergide (3.0 mg.kg-1) and to the 5-HT4-receptor antagonist DAU 6285 CL (3.0 mg.kg-1)

Influence of bacteriophages cocktail on European eel (Anguilla anguilla) immunity and survival after experimental challenge.

Inland fishery belongs to those branches of animal production that use very large amounts of chemotherapeutics, in particular antibiotics. The accumulation of chemotherapeutic agents in bottom sediments is a direct threat to the aquatic environment and directly affects the condition and health of the fish. Finding a preparation that could be used both prophylactically to increase the resistance of fish and therapeutically in case of infection with pathogenic bacteria, without side effects for fish and aquatic environment could be a great solution to this problem. Our aim was to determine influ

Steroid implants for the induction of vitellogenesis in feminized European silver eels (Anguilla anguilla L.).

Assisted propagation of the European eel will lead to a closed production cycle supplying the aquaculture industry with juvenile glass eels. Females require long-term weekly treatment with pituitary extract (PE), which is stressful and causes abnormalities in oogenesis. We tested the effects of 17α-methyltestosterone (17 MT), as potent androgen activating the androgen receptor, and 17β-estradiol (E2), as an inducer of vitellogenesis, to shorten the duration of PE treatment.Four groups of feminized eels were subjected to a simulated migration and subsequent injection with implants containing 17

Accumulation of neurotoxic organochlorines and trace elements in brain of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Xenobiotics such as organochlorine compounds (OCs) and metals have been suggested to play a significant role in the collapse of European eel stocks in the last decades. Several of these pollutants could affect functioning of the nervous system. Still, no information is so far available on levels of potentially neurotoxic pollutants in eel brain. In present study, carried out on female eels caught in Belgian rivers and canals, we analyzed brain levels of potentially-neurotoxic trace elements (Ag, Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, MeHg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sb, Zn) and OCs (Polychlorinated biphenyls, P

Beta3-adrenoceptor in the eel (Anguilla anguilla) heart: negative inotropy and NO-cGMP-dependent mechanism.

Neuroendocrine regulation of cardiac function involves a population of three types of beta-adrenoceptors (ARs). In various mammalian species, beta1- and beta2-AR stimulation produces an increase in contractility; whereas beta3-AR activation mediates negative inotropic effects. At the moment, nothing is known about the physiological role of beta3-AR in fish. Using an isolated working heart preparation, we show that a beta3-AR selective agonist BRL(37344) (0.1-100 nmol l(-1)) elicits a dose-dependent negative inotropism in the freshwater eel Anguilla anguilla. This effect was insensitive to the

Mechanisms of acid release in isolated gas gland cells of the European eel Anguilla anguilla.

Mechanisms of acid production and of acid release have been analyzed in isolated gas gland cells of the eel swimbladder using a cytosensor microphysiometer. Incubation of isolated cells with oxamic acid caused a dose-dependent decrease in the rate of proton release. At the highest oxamic acid concentration used (20 mmol/l), proton release was reduced by approximately 40%; incubation with sodium fluoride (10 mmol/l) or removal of glucose from the extracellular medium caused 60 and 80% reduction, respectively. NaCN had little effect on proton secretion. Proton release of isolated gas gland cells

Effects of steroid hormones on pituitary immunoreactive gonadotropin in European freshwater eel, Anguilla anguilla L.

The low pituitary immunoreactive gonadotropin (IR GTH) contents of immature female or male freshwater eels were strongly increased after intraperitoneal injections of estradiol. Using female eels, the effect was shown to be dose dependent. In neither sex was modification of pituitary IR GTH observed after progesterone treatment; a very small increase (significant in females but not in males) was produced by cortisol. Methylmercury effects on migratory behaviour in glass eels (Anguilla anguilla): an experimental study using isotopic tracers.

The effect of methylmercury (MeHg) on glass eels' propensity to migrate, mitochondrial activity and antioxidative defence systems was investigated. Marine glass eels were first sorted in an experimental flume according to their response to dusk. Fish responding to the decrease in light intensity by ascending in the water column and moving with or against the flow were considered as having a high propensity to migrate (migrant). Glass eels still sheltering at the end of the 24 h catching period were considered as having a low propensity to migrate and were called non-migrant. Migrant and non-mi

Epidemiology and pathology of Anguillicoloides crassus in European eel Anguilla anguilla from the Tagus estuary (Portugal).

Infection of the European eel Anguilla anguilla by the swimbladder nematode Anguillicoloides crassus was investigated for the first time at 5 sampling sites in the Tagus estuary (Portugal). A total of 332 yellow eels were examined, revealing a prevalence of 56% and a mean intensity of 3.2 lumen worms per swimbladder. The effect of the host's sex and size on parasitism descriptors was studied. Only total length (TL) was considered a significant determinant, with larger eels harbouring a higher number of nematodes. Eels were parasitized in 4 of the 5 sampling sites, with prevalence values follow

Sensitivity of eels (Anguilla anguilla) and carp (Cyprinus carpio) to type C and E botulinum toxin.

This study has shown for the first time that fish such as eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) and carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) are sensitive to type E botulinum toxin. With oral administration the MLD for eels was 27.500 mouse LD50 per kg body weight, while for carp it was only 236 mouse LD50 per kg. Carp were also found to be sensitive to a slight degree to type C botulinum toxin, the MLD of the most virulent toxin of this type being 457,000 mouse LD50 per kg with oral administration. Eels, however, showed no sensitivity to type C toxin.

Changes in the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) after chronic exposure to environmental cocaine concentration.

The recent discovery of illicit drugs in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about the possible effects on the aquatic fauna, because of the pharmacological activity of these substances. Cocaine is an illicit drug widespread in surface waters since it is the third most widely used drug in North America, Western and Central Europe, and the second in Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The gills of male silver eels exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocai

The occurrence of persistent chlorinated and brominated organic contaminants in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in Irish waters.

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a relatively high lipid, long lived species capable of living in a variety of brackish, fresh and marine habitats. As such, eels can accumulate organic pollutants and have been incorporated into environmental monitoring programs as a suitable "bioindicator" species for the determination of the levels of organic contaminants within different water bodies. The global eel stock is now in decline and while the cause of the collapse remains unidentified, it is likely to include a combination of anthropogenic mortality in addition to environmental degradation.

Effects of acetylcholine, serotonin and noradrenalin on ion transport in the middle and posterior part of Anguilla anguilla intestine.

The effects of acetylcholine analogues, serotonin and catecholamines on ion transport were studied in both the middle and the posterior intestine of Anguilla anguilla, mounted in an Ussing chamber, with the aim of understanding whether these regulators affect different mechanisms in the different tracts. In the middle intestine, acetylcholine analogues and serotonin decreased the serosa negative transepithelial potential and short-circuit current without altering the transepithelial resistance; catecholamines reversed the inhibitory effects of both regulators. Similar opposite effects were pro
