Animal-assisted therapy for fear and anxiety management during pediatric dental treatment: case reports.

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is associated with the relief of pain, stress, and anxiety in various healthcare fields. To evaluate the usefulness of AAT to provide emotional support and assist in behavioral management of patients for routine pediatric dentistry, 2 children underwent dental treatment with and without the application of AAT after their guardians provided informed consent. The patients' stress, anxiety, and behavior in the sessions with and without AAT were compared. The patients were a 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl who required rehabilitative treatment of primary teeth. D

The perspectives of clinical level medical students on animal-assisted therapy: a study in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The role of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in complementary and alternative medicine is well acknowledged. AAT is widely patronized, in developed countries such as USA, Canada, and many European countries, but less so in developing countries in Africa including Ghana. For persons in developing African countries and elsewhere to benefit from AAT, healthcare professionals must be acquainted with it recommend it to their patients when necessary. This study therefore assessed the perspectives of clinical-level medical students on AAT. METHOD: A semi-structured questionnaire was used to

Animal-Assisted Therapy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Lessons from "Case Reports" in Media Stories.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can follow war trauma, sexual abuse, other traumas, and even be experienced by commanders for the PTSD of their subordinates. Medications and counseling are sometimes not effective, so new treatments are needed. Some years ago, I suggested that animal-assisted therapy (AAT) (pet therapy) might be beneficial for PTSD. A large randomized controlled trial is underway of canine-assisted therapy for PTSD. Randomized controlled trials are most useful in assessing the efficacy of a medical intervention as these trials control for known and unknown biases. However

Impact of animal-assisted intervention on therapy engagement in hospitalized children with traumatic brain injuries.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who sustained traumatic brain injuries in childhood may experience global challenges including disorders of consciousness, motor dysfunctions, and sensory impairments. Occupational and physical therapy are important parts of recovery from an acute brain injury, addressing deficits that directly affect functional recovery and return to age-appropriate activities of daily living. Difficulty with active engagement in therapy tasks can limit the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Therapists search for methods to increase patient engagement to bolster patient progre

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Occurrence of ESKAPE Bacteria Group in Dogs, and the Related Zoonotic Risk in Animal-Assisted Therapy, and in Animal-Assisted Activity in the Health Context.

Animal-assisted interventions are widely implemented in different contexts worldwide. Particularly, animal-assisted therapies and animal-assisted activities are often implemented in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other health facilities. These interventions bring several benefits to patients but can also expose them to the risk of infection with potentially zoonotic agents. The dog is the main animal species involved used in these interventions. Therefore, we aimed at collecting data regarding the occurrence of the pathogens ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiel

Exploring the Perceptions of Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury Participating in Animal-Assisted Therapy with Domesticated Ducks.

Background: Green Care therapies were developed in the late 20th century as nature-based interventions aimed at supporting recovery for individuals with mental and physical health challenges. Animal-assisted therapy with farm animals (AATF), a branch of Green Care, involves engaging individuals with farm animals in natural settings to promote healing. Previous studies have shown the benefits of animal-assisted therapies (AAT) for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), suggesting AATF could offer similar advantages. This study aimed to examine the impact of an AATF program using domesti

Assessment of Behavioral Predispositions of Selected Chicken Breeds for Use in Animal-Assisted Therapy: A Pilot Study.

The growth of interest in alternative forms of animal-assisted therapies (AAT) with chickens creates a need to identify breeds with appropriate behavioral predispositions. This pilot study evaluated the suitability of four breeds of ornamental chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), Silkie bantam, Pekin bantam, Ko-Shamo, and Chabo daruma, for work in chicken-assisted therapy (CAT). Tests simulated an AAT session, assessing human approach and staying in their vicinity, reactions to sudden stimuli, and touch tolerance. A standard tonic immobility test was also performed. Significant interbreed diff

Beyond the human touch: A critical review of the promise and challenges of animal- and robot-assisted therapy in loneliness and mental healthcare.

Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dementia, are increasingly recognized as exacerbated by social isolation and loneliness, prompting growing interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven and robotic interventions for social support. Traditional interventions such as animal-assisted therapy (AAT) have demonstrated effectiveness by leveraging the human-animal bond to reduce stress, enhance social engagement, and improve emotional well-being. However, AAT faces logistical challenges, including availability, cost, and animal welfare conce
