The well-known Kröller method for the determination of cyanide requires the use of the harmful chemicals benzidine (carcinogenic) and bromine (toxic) in the colorimetric part; the analytical result depends strongly on the conduct of the liberation procedure. The substitution of barbituric acid and N-chlorosuccinimide for benzidine and bromine has been investigated. The reproducibility of both colorimetric reactions is similar, but the sensitivity of the barbituric acid colorimetry is approximately 50% higher. A reproducible liberation yield can be obtained by a proper control of the heating pr

Meat and meat products are among the most widely consumed foods worldwide. This places particular responsibility on manufacturers to ensure the quality and safety of these products. Due to their relatively high market value, meat products are susceptible to adulteration, highlighting the need for reliable methods of food authenticity assessment. Isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) method is one of the modern and most reliable analytical tools for providing information about the nature of the origin of components in food. A comprehensive analysis of isotope ratios was performed across the me

This review explores the potential of Chlorella vulgaris (CLV) as an alternative supplement in animal feed. CLV is rich in essential nutrients including fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, as well as bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, which contribute to its health-promoting properties. The nutritional composition of CLV can vary depending on factors such as cultivation methods, nutrient availability, light intensity, temperature, water pH, strain, and processing techniques. The rigid cell wall of the microalga limits nutrient accessibility, particularly in monogastric ani

Background/Objectives: The inappropriate use of veterinary medicines in feed for food-producing animals can compromise food safety. Intensive animal production is associated with the inappropriate use of antibiotics in feed, at subtherapeutic concentrations, to promote animal growth. It is therefore crucial to develop an effective multi-detection method to ensure that this feed complies with the requirements of European Commission Regulations. This control is essential to ensure consumer protection, as adequate supervision contributes to reducing antimicrobial resistance, a growing concern wor

Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites that have been associated with severe toxic effects to vertebrates produced by many important phytopathogenic and food spoilage fungi including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Alternaria species. The contamination of foods and animal feeds with mycotoxins is a worldwide problem. We reviewed various control strategies to prevent the growth of mycotoxigenic fungi as well as to inhibit mycotoxin biosynthesis including pre-harvest (resistance varieties, field management and the use of biological and chemical agents), harvest management, and post-

Animal feed is at the beginning of the food safety chain in the "farm-to-fork" model. The emergence of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has raised awareness of the importance of contaminated animal feed, but less attention has been paid to the role of bacterial contamination of animal feed in human foodborne illness. In the United States, animal feed is frequently contaminated with non-Typhi serotypes of Salmonella enterica and may lead to infection or colonization of food animals. These bacteria can contaminate animal carcasses at slaughter or cross-contaminate other food items, leading to h

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) was the first virus of wide scale concern to be linked to possible transmission by livestock feed or ingredients. Measures to exclude pathogens, prevent cross-contamination, and actively reduce the pathogenic load of feed and ingredients are being developed. However, research thus far has focused on the role of chemicals or thermal treatment to reduce the RNA in the actual feedstuffs, and has not addressed potential residual contamination within the manufacturing facility that may lead to continuous contamination of finished feeds. The purpose of this exp

Two cases of vitamin D3 intoxication in piglets are described. The dietary concentrations of vitamin D3 were 265 and 435 thousand IE/kg. Decreased feed intake, growth depression and polyuria or polydypsia were observed. In some animals hypercalcemia and symptoms of impaired renal function were found. Pathological findings included calcinosis of several tissues and degenerative damage.

Insect evolution, from a free to a parasitic lifestyle, took eons under the pressure of a plethora of ecological and environmental drivers in different habitats, resulting in varying degrees of interactions with their hosts. Most Drosophilidae are known to be adapted to feeding on substrates rich in bacteria, yeasts and other microfungi. Some of them, mainly those in the Steganinae subfamily, display a singular behaviour, feeding on animal tissues or secretions. This behaviour may represent an evolving tendency towards parasitism. Indeed, while the predatory attitude is typical for the larval

Animal feeds may be contaminated, accidentally or maliciously, with a number of zoonotic bacteria. Animal infections with these bacterial agents, whether or not they cause animal disease, may lead to human illnesses. Anhydrous ammonia was introduced on farms in developed countries as a high-nitrogen soil amendment, but later found use in enhancing crude protein in low-quality roughage fed to ruminants and in neutralizing mycotoxins in fungus-infested feed grains. Although ammonia has been known to be effective against bacteria in other contexts (e.g., manure, community sewage sludge, seeds for

Recent statutory changes involving animal drugs are expected to facilitate the therapeutic use of antibiotics in animal feeds in the United States of America. The use of antibiotics in animal feeds is controversial due to the potential development of resistant bacterial pathogens in food-producing animals which are exposed to the antibiotics and the resultant public health risk. Zoonotic micro-organisms can be transmitted to humans through contact with animal populations, either directly or through the consumption of contaminated food. Recommendations to address the public health concerns incl

A new method was developed for the determination of antibiotics in animal feeds. This qualitative and quantitative method can be applied to 17 antibiotics currently accepted for use in animal feeds. A solvent prewash step is used to differentiate groups of antibiotics and individuals of the same class of antibiotics and to remove interfering substances. Agarose gel electrophoresis at pH 6.0 and 8.0 is used to further differentiate the individual antibiotics and as an agar diffusion assay. Minimum detectable concentrations of antibiotics currently accepted for use in animal feeds were determine

Our aim was to study respiratory symptoms and lung function decline in farmers, with particular attention to the influence of handling hay, straw and animal feed. From a cohort recruited in 1993-1994, 219 (82.6%) dairy farmers, 130 (62.5%) nondairy agricultural workers and 99 (66.4%) controls were re-evaluated in 2006. They answered medical and occupational questionnaires, underwent spirometric tests at both evaluations and pulse oximetry in 2006. Dairy and nondairy agricultural workers showed an increased risk for usual morning phlegm (adjusted OR 4.27 (95% CI 1.41-12.95) and 3.59 (95% CI 1.1

Feed samples from 94 cases involving fungal contamination and suspected mycotoxicosis of farm animals in western Canada were examined during 1982-1994 to assess the incidence of mycotoxins. Samples were analyzed for aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, citrinin, sterigmatocystin, and the fungal estrogen zearalenone. Samples infected with Fusarium fungi were additionally assayed for nivalenol, deoxynivalenol, fusarenone-x, 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, HT-2 toxin, and T-2 toxin. Mycotoxins were found in 21 feed samples from 17 cases (18% of the reported cases), generally at levels far belo

The rising prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of bacteria is a global health problem at the human, animal, and environmental interfaces, which necessitates the "One Health" approach. AMR of bacteria in animal feed are a potential cause of the prevalence in livestock; however, the role remains unclear. To date, there is limited research on AMR of bacteria in animal feed in Japan. In this study, a total of 57 complete feed samples and 275 feed ingredient samples were collected between 2018 and 2020. Enterococcus spp. were present in 82.5% of complete feed (47/57 samples), 76.5% of soyb

The enzyme phytase has important applications in animal feed, because it favors the bioavailability of phosphorus present in phytate, an antinutritional compound widely found associated with plant proteins. However, for feed applications, the phytase must withstand high temperatures during the feed pelleting process, as well as the gastrointestinal conditions of the animal. This work evaluates the feasibility of immobilizing phytase on hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles, in order to improve its properties. HA is a material with excellent physicochemical characteristics for enzyme immobilization

Farmed animals such as pig and poultry receive additional Zn and Cu in their diets due to supplementing elements in compound feed as well as medical remedies. Enteral bacteria in farmed animals are shown to develop resistance to trace elements such as Zn and Cu. Resistance to Zn is often linked with resistance to methicillin in staphylococci, and Zn supplementation to animal feed may increase the proportion of multiresistant E. coli in the gut. Resistance to Cu in bacteria, in particular enterococci, is often associated with resistance to antimicrobial drugs like macrolides and glycopeptides (
