The pharyngeal muscular system of polychaetes is highly complex and shows remarkable variation in structure and function among taxa. In this study, the functional anatomy of the pharynx of G. tridactyla was investigated using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Sixteen Glycera specimens were imaged in different pharyngeal positions to examine the roles of key muscular structures in pharyngeal movement. The high-resolution imaging provided by micro-CT allowed visualisation of the pharyngeal muscles in their original topography, revealing essential components for pharyngeal function, including

Senescent cells, which arise due to damage-associated signals, are apoptosis-resistant and can express a pro-inflammatory, tissue-destructive senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). We recently reported that a component of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) surface protein, S1, can amplify the SASP of senescent cultured human cells and that a related mouse β-coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), increases SASP factors and senescent cell burden in infected mice. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 induces senescence in human non-senescent cells and exacerba

Protodrilidae is a small family of almost exclusively interstitial annelids that lack parapodia and chaetae and possess a basiepithelial nervous system. This study presents a histological description of Lindrilus flavocapitatus (Uljanin, 1877), a protodrilid species last examined morphologically in the early 20th century, and provides detailed information on the organization of its nervous and sensory systems using histochemical detection of catecholamines (CAs), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and alpha-tubulin immunolabelling. The epidermal ciliary structures on the head show a species-s

A new spionid polychaete, Rhynchospioaciliata sp. nov., was discovered in the fine sandy sediments of an intertidal habitat from Korean waters. The new species is considered a simultaneous hermaphrodite, but no brooding embryos were found in any of the specimens collected in this study. This species is unique in the absence of ciliation in the anteriormost chaetigers. Rhynchospioaciliata sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to Rhynchospiofoliosa Imajima, 1991 from Japan in having an elevation on the prostomium, conspicuously large and foliaceous branchiae, and intersegmental lateral pouche

Evolution of central nervous systems is a long-debated topic. Similar mechanisms of conditional neural specification linked to dorsal-ventral (D-V) axis formation have been used to support homology across several taxa. We tested for autonomous versus conditional neural specification in two distantly related annelids, Capitella teleta and Platynereis dumerilii, using blastomere isolations and ablations. Our results demonstrate autonomous specification of anterior neural tissue in isolated first-quartet (1q) micromeres for both annelids. In both annelids, partial larvae derived from isolation of

Increasing evidence in the field of bioprospection fosters the necessity of studying poorly investigated poisonous marine invertebrates to expand knowledge on animal venom biology. Among marine annelids, amphinomid fireworms are notorious for their bearded trunk equipped with a powerful stinging capacity. Here, a methodological workflow based on analytical chemistry techniques (compound isolation followed by mass spectrometry and spectroscopy analyses) was applied to gain new insights, leading to the identification and structural elucidation of an array of natural products from Mediterranean s

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a manipulation of cellular behavior using non-ablative low intensity light sources. This manipulation triggers a cascade of metabolic effects and physiological changes resulting in improved tissue repair, of benefit in the treatment of tissue injury, degenerative or autoimmune diseases. PBM has witnessed an exponential increase in both clinical instrument technology and applications. It is therefore of benefit to find reliable experimental models to test the burgeoning laser technology for medical applications. In our work, we proposed the earthworm Dendrobaena vene

Biodiversity in the Laptev Sea was assessed for gutless marine worms of the family Siboglinidae (Annelida), whose metabolism is provided by symbiotic bacteria that oxidize hydrogen sulfide and methane. Seven siboglinid species were found within the geographical boundaries of the Laptev Sea, and another species was found in an adjacent sector of the Arctic Basin. The largest number of finds and the greatest biological diversity of siboglinids were observed in the eastern part of the Laptev Sea in a field of numerous methane flares. One find was made in the estuary area of the Lena River at a de

The infection by Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparède, 1862 (Oligochaeta: Tubificinae) in humans is relatively uncommon. The present report is to describe an incidental human infection with oligochaetes in the nasal cavity of a Chinese man, a 25-year-old man residing in Zhangjiakou city, Hebei province, China presenting with nose bleed, severe itching, continuous sneezing, and rhinorrhea. A lot of oligochaete worms were found in the nasal discharge of the patient. The detected worms were identified as Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Annelida: Oligochaeta) based on morphological and molecular character

Scalibregmatidae Malmgren, 1867 is a relatively small family of annelids, with only two taxa reported to Brazil. In this work, we expand the scientific knowledge of this group by presenting two new Scalibregma Rathke, 1843 species. The new species S. lanai sp. nov. and S. cinthyae sp. nov. were collected during an expedition to the Campos and Santos oceanographic basins. Scalibregma cinthyae sp. nov. is unique among its congeners by the presence of two rows of paired lobes on the mouths upper and lower lips, whereas S. lanai sp. nov. is unique among its congeners by the presence of two rows of

A new species of Phalacrostemma (Annelida, Sabellariidae) is described based on the specimens collected at a depth of 675 m on the Ritto Seamount of the West Mariana Ridge, northwestern Pacific. This record represents both the deepest occurrence of Sabellariidae in Japan and the first record of the genus Phalacrostemma from the region. Phalacrostemma ritto sp. nov. dwells in a tube made of small sand particles and foraminiferans, which is attached to the spines of a cidarid sea urchin. The new species is characterized by having 22-30 pairs of outer paleae arranged in a spiral, outer paleae wit

Dinophiliformia is a newly revealed clade within Annelida that is a sister group to Pleistoannelida. Dimorphilus gyrociliatus is a representative of this clade that has fascinated scientists with its high degree of sexual dimorphism. Both males and females are small, worm-like creatures that have specific ciliary structures: anterior ventral, posterior ventral, and dorsal ciliary fields in males, and prototroch, metatroch, and ventral ciliary fields in females. There are data on the morphology and development of the nervous system in Oweniidae, Sipunculida, Pleistoannelida, and even Dinophilif

Like many other annelids, bearded fireworms, Hermodice carunculata, are capable of regenerating posterior body segments and terminal structures lost to amputation. Although previous research has examined anterior regeneration in other fireworm species, posterior regenerative ability in fireworms remains poorly studied. As the morphology of the anal lobe (a small, fleshy terminal structure of unknown function) has been used to distinguish East and West Atlantic H. carunculata populations, there is a more imminent need to understand the morphology and organization of tissues in specimens undergo

The aims of the present study were to analyze the ovary cord structure and oogenesis in Erpobdella johanssoni under light, fluorescent and transmission electron microscopy and to compare the obtained results with other clitellate annelids, especially with other arhynchobdellid leeches. Each of the paired ovaries is composed of the ovary wall (ovisac) and several (7-8) short, cone-shaped ovary cords. The ovary cords are of the "Erpobdella" type, i.e. they are short and polarized and five zones containing germ cells at consecutives stages of their development can be distinguished along their lon

Despite the increasing data concerning the structure of the adult nervous system in various Lophotrochozoa groups, the early events during the neurogenesis of rare and unique groups need clarification. Annelida are a diverse clade of Lophotrochozoa, and their representatives demonstrate a variety of body plans, lifestyles, and life cycles. Comparative data about the early development are available for Errantia, Sedentaria, Sipuncula, and Palaeoannelida; however, our knowledge of Dinophiliformia is currently scarce. Representatives of Dinophiliformia are small interstitial worms combining uniqu

Eunice woodwardiBaird, 1869, originally described from the Ría de A Coruña (NW Iberian Peninsula), has been overlooked and never reported from the Atlantic coast of Spain after original description and the subsequent redescription of the holotype. In the present study, we revised comparatively the holotype, newly collected specimens of this species and specimens identified as Eunice vittata (Delle Chiaje, 1829) from western Mediterranean Sea. The validity of E. woodwardi is supported and previous descriptions are complemented after a throughout study of the external morphology by means of ligh

Most members of Siboglinidae (Annelida) harbor endosymbiotic bacteria that allow them to thrive in extreme environments such as hydrothermal vents, methane seeps, and whale bones. These symbioses are enabled by specialized hemoglobins (Hbs) that are able to bind hydrogen sulfide for transportation to their chemosynthetic endosymbionts. Sulfur-binding capabilities are hypothesized to be due to cysteine residues at key positions in both vascular and coelomic Hbs, especially in the A2 and B2 chains. Members of the genus Osedax, which live on whale bones, do not have chemosynthetic endosymbionts,

The groundwater worms of the family Lumbriculidae exhibit high diversity and endemism in southern Europe. All stygobiont lumbriculid species known so far in this region belong to six genera. In the present study, a new stygobiont lumbriculid Fendia cantabrica n. gen. n. sp. is described, mainly based on distinct characteristics of the male duct structure. The male duct is semiprosoporous and the spermathecae (two pairs) are postatrial, starting in the ovarian segment. These characteristics are shared with only two lumbriculid genera: the Nearctic Eremidrilus and Holarctic Trichodrilus. The new

A new species of the orbiniid genus Phylo Kinberg, 1866, P.heterochaetus sp. nov., is described based on material collected from the northern Yellow Sea, China. This is the thirteenth species in Phylo. The new species can be easily identified by the combination of the following characters: anterior thorax with 13 chaetigers, interramal cirri absent, anterior thoracic neuropodia with 4 or 5 rows of uncini, intermixed with a few subuluncini in the first 1 or 2 rows, and a ventral fringe of numerous stomach papillae present on chaetigers 12-24. Phylofimbriata is recorded for the first time from C
