Modified semantic feature analysis for anomia: a single case study.

Semantic feature analysis (SFA) is a treatment approach designed for patients with lexical retrieval difficulty caused by semantic deficits. During training, a structured framework (e.g. requiring the patient to name the category, function, and colour of the target items) is usually provided to facilitate the patient in thinking of the semantic features of the target items. Nevertheless, the use of a structured framework potentially limits the variety of semantic features activated for lexical retrieval. This study investigated the effectiveness of modified SFA training to address this potenti

Proper name anomia after right-hemispheric lesion: a case study.

This study describes the case of CH, a 68-year-old left-handed woman who suffered a right temporo-parieto-occipital infarct in the territory of the middle cerebral artery and who exhibits severe proper name anomia. During the acute stage, CH was diagnosed with severe amnestic aphasia (Aachen Aphasia Test). Her lesion mirrors those of left hemisphere impairing the processing proper names, without an aphasic language disorder in general. Seven weeks later, language improved to a mild amnestic aphasia that currently does not interfere with her daily life. However, the use of proper names in both

Comparing fixed- and randomized-interval spaced retrieval in anomia treatment.

UNLABELLED: Spaced retrieval (SR) has recently been modified to target anomia in persons with aphasia (PWA). It relies on a strict management of the inter-stimulus interval (ISI) where the time between stimulus presentations is doubled or halved based on response accuracy. Although SR is successful in treating anomia, it remains to be studied whether the strict ISI management is necessary. The present study compared fixed-interval spaced retrieval (FISR) to randomized-interval spaced retrieval (RISR) in anomia treatment. Using alternating treatments single subject design, three PWA were traine

Activity in preserved left hemisphere regions predicts anomia severity in aphasia.

Understanding the neural mechanism that supports preserved language processing in aphasia has implications for both basic and applied science. This study examined brain activation associated with correct picture naming in 15 patients with aphasia. We contrasted each patient's activation to the activation observed in a neurologically healthy control group, allowing us to identify regions with unusual activity patterns. The results revealed that increased activation in preserved left hemisphere areas is associated with better naming performance in aphasia. This relationship was linear in nature;

Personalization of Words in Anomia Treatment for People With Aphasia: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: This scoping review examined how "personalization" of treatment targets, specifically words, has been defined and implemented in anomia interventions for people with aphasia following stroke or primary progressive aphasia. The review identified (a) how studies define personalized words, (b) the methods used to select them, and (c) the linguistic characteristics of personalized targets. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews, systematic searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and CINA

Naming and Knowing Revisited: Eyetracking Correlates of Anomia in Progressive Aphasia.

Progressive naming impairment (i.e., anomia) is a core diagnostic symptom of numerous pathologies that impact anterior and inferior portions of the temporal lobe. For patients who experience such regional temporal lobe degeneration, patterns of language loss often parallel the degradation of semantic memory, an etiology of naming impairment known as semantic anomia. Previous studies of semantic anomia have focused extensively on the output of naming attempts by contrasting errors, omissions, and distortions as a function of item-level characteristics (e.g., prototypicality, semantic category).

Morphometric correlates of anomia in patients with small left temporopolar lesions.

Visual object naming is a complex cognitive process that engages an interconnected network of cortical regions moving from occipitotemporal to anterior-inferior temporal cortices, and extending into the inferior frontal cortex. Naming can fail for diverse reasons, and different stages of the naming multi-step process appear to be reliant upon the integrity of different neuroanatomical locations. While the neural correlates of semantic errors have been extensively studied, the neural basis of omission errors remains relatively unspecified. Although a strong line of evidence supports an associat

Cognitive neuropsychological analysis and neuroanatomic correlates in a case of acute anomia.

We describe an analysis of lexical processing performed in a patient with the acute onset of an isolated anomia. Based on a model of lexical processing, we evaluated hypotheses as to the source of the naming deficit. We observed impairments in oral and written picture naming and oral naming to definition with relatively intact semantic processing across input modalities, suggesting that output from the semantic system was impaired. In contrast to previous reports, we propose that this pattern represents an impairment that arises late in semantic processing prior to accessing mode-specific verb

Neuropsychological demonstration of splenial interhemispheric disconnection in a case of "optic anomia".

A patient is described whose neuropsychological deficit corresponded to the notion of "optic aphasia" or, better, optic anomia. The functional deficit was undirectional, i.e. there was a severe impairment in the naming of visually presented stimuli without impairment in the comprehension of the corresponding names. The splenial disconnection was demonstrated by intact cross modal matching within the right hemisphere as well as preserved left-handed tactile naming, which is processed via mid-callosal pathways. The psychological interpretation is discussed in terms of visual and tactile semantic

Neural activity associated with semantic versus phonological anomia treatments in aphasia.

Naming impairments in aphasia are typically targeted using semantic and/or phonologically based tasks. However, it is not known whether these treatments have different neural mechanisms. Eight participants with aphasia received twelve treatment sessions using an alternating treatment design, with fMRI scans pre- and post-treatment. Half the sessions employed Phonological Components Analysis (PCA), and half the sessions employed Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA). Pre-treatment activity in the left caudate correlated with greater immediate treatment success for items treated with SFA, whereas recr

Colour anomia restricted to the left visual hemifield after splenial disconnexion.

In a patient with damage to the right occipital lobe and to the splenium of the corpus callosum, an incomplete colour anopia in the left upper quadrants and a colour anomia was found for the complete left visual hemifield beyond 2 degrees eccentricity. The patient had no difficulty in recognising coloured targets when presented in the periphery of the left visual hemifield and in the foveal region, but could not name them correctly. The results suggest that the lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum disconnects the right visual cortex from the language areas of the left hemisphere, and

Pure anomia with spared action naming due to a left temporal lesion.

We report the case of a patient who, after surgical ablation of an angioma in the depth of the left temporal lobe, developed a highly selective impairment of naming. A detailed investigation allowed to exclude a disorder of visual recognition or of semantic memory, and indicated the output lexicon as the most probable site of impairment. Grammatical class effects, with superior action naming, and a high consistency within and across output modalities further characterized the patient's performance. Together with some other recently reported cases, this patient suggests a correlation between te

Comparative Effectiveness of In-Person and Virtual Picture-Naming Treatment for Poststroke Anomia.

PURPOSE: In light of COVID-19, telepractice for speech therapy has been increasingly adopted. Telepractice promotes accessibility to therapy services for those in rural environments, lowers the frequency of missed appointments, and reduces the costs of rehabilitation. The efficacy of telepractice has been scarcely explored in the aphasia literature. Preliminary research has demonstrated comparable results of telepractice and in-person therapy for people with aphasia, but the current scope of research is insufficient to guide clinical practice. The present study examined whether the virtual adm

Reversible anomia and cerebral venous thrombosis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis is a rare form of venous stroke with diverse clinical manifestations. Word-finding difficulty (anomia) is rarely reported in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 30-year-old right-handed Ethiopian female patient, who presented with global headache associated with a new onset word-finding difficulty of 2 weeks duration. The headache was not responsive to over-the-counter medications. She reported blurring of vision and nausea. Two months previously, she gave birth to a dead fetus. On neurological assessment, the patient

Anomia is present pre-symptomatically in frontotemporal dementia due to MAPT mutations.

INTRODUCTION: A third of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is caused by an autosomal-dominant genetic mutation in one of three genes: microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9orf72) and progranulin (GRN). Prior studies of prodromal FTD have identified impaired executive function and social cognition early in the disease but few have studied naming in detail. METHODS: We investigated performance on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in the GENetic Frontotemporal dementia Initiative cohort of 499 mutation carriers and 248 mutation-negative controls divided across t

Semantic Feature Training for the Treatment of Anomia in Alzheimer Disease: A Preliminary Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: This is a preliminary investigation into the effectiveness of semantic feature training for the treatment of anomia in Alzheimer disease (AD). BACKGROUND: Anomia is a common clinical characteristic of AD. It is widely held that anomia in AD is caused by the combination of cognitive deficits and progressive loss of semantic feature information. Therapy that aims to help participants relearn or retain semantic features should, therefore, help treat anomia in AD. METHODS: Two men with AD and one man with progressive nonfluent aphasia received 10 treatment sessions focused on relearni

Are names difficult to recall because they are unique? A case study of a patient with anomia.

According to Burton and Bruce (1992), names are more difficult to recall than biographical information about people, such as their occupation, because names are unique or highly distinctive. It follows from this that anomic patients who have great difficulty in recalling names should also find it difficult to recall other information that is unique to a particular individual. This paper attempts to evaluate this claim by examining the case of NP, a patient who has severe anomic word-finding difficulties following the rupture and repair of a posterior cerebral artery aneurysm. NP's ability to r

Voice-specific proper name anomia ('phonoanomia') after bilateral temporal hemorrhagic brain lesions.

We describe a patient who developed bilateral temporal lesions due to a haemorrhagic stroke. One year after onset, he showed marked apperceptive prosopagnosia and could not name people from their voices, although he had spared semantic knowledge about people he could not name and could access this knowledge from people's voice. Importantly, the patient was able to retrieve proper name of persons after their description and was able to name sounds and songs; he could also retrieve proper names of monuments, towns and cartoon characters upon visual presentation. No further relevant cognitive imp

"I don't know who you are": anomia for people's names in Alzheimer's disease.

It is well known that difficulty in the retrieval of people's names is an early symptom of Alzheimer's Disease Dementia (ADD), but there is a controversy about the nature of this deficit. In this study, we analyzed whether the nature of the difficulty in retrieving proper names in ADD reflects pre-semantic, semantic, or post-semantic difficulties. To do so, 85 older adults, 35 with ADD and 50 cognitively healthy (CH), completed a task with famous faces involving: recognition, naming, semantic questions, and naming with phonological cues. The ADD group scored lower than the CH group in all task
