Successful Surgical Removal of the Crystalline Lenses in a Black-Necked Swan (Cygnus melancoryphus).

A captive-bred, adult, male, black-necked swan (Cygnus melancoryphus) was presented for evaluation of apparent vision loss due to cataract formation of an unknown duration. The animal was having difficulty navigating its enclosure, and lenticular opacities had been previously noted in both eyes. On examination, bilateral hypermature cataracts were diagnosed. Following preoperative diagnostic testing, surgical removal of the crystalline lenses in both eyes was performed using minor modifications of standard techniques. Follow-up examination and behavioral observation at 60 days postsurgery indi

Sarcocystis rileyi emerging in Hungary: is rice breast disease underreported in the region?

Reports of Sarcocystis rileyi-like protozoa ('rice breast disease') from anseriform birds had been rare in Europe until the last two decades, when S. rileyi was identified in northern Europe and the UK. However, despite the economic losses resulting from S. rileyi infection, no recent accounts are available on its presence (which can be suspected) in most parts of central, western, southern and eastern Europe. Between 2014 and 2019, twelve mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were observed to have rice breast disease in Hungary, and the last one of these 12 cases allowed molecular identification of S

First identification of "Brachyspira hampsonii" in wild European waterfowl.

Anseriformes deserve special attention in the epidemiology of Brachyspira spp. because diverse Anseriformes species have been described to act as highly efficient carriers of several Brachyspira spp. that can also infect livestock. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and diversity of Brachyspira spp. in waterfowl that winter in Spain. Brachyspira spp. were isolated from 51 of the 205 faecal samples collected from graylag geese and mallards in the Villafáfila Lagoons Nature Reserve (Northwestern Spain). The Brachyspira species identified through phenotyping, PCR and sequenci

Developmental basis of phallus reduction during bird evolution.

BACKGROUND: One of the most puzzling events in evolution is the reduction and loss of the phallus in birds. All birds reproduce by internal fertilization, but only ∼3% of birds have retained a phallus capable of intromission. A number of hypotheses have been proposed for the evolutionary mechanisms that drove phallus reduction; however, the underlying developmental mechanisms are unknown. RESULTS: We investigated genital development in two sister clades of birds, Galliformes (land fowl), most of which lack an intromittent phallus, and Anseriformes (waterfowl), which have well developed phallu

Avian botulism and avian chlamydiosis in wild water birds, Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Montana, USA.

In 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Wildlife Health Center, Madison, Wisconsin, conducted a diagnostic investigation into a water bird mortality event involving intoxication with avian botulism type C and infection with avian chlamydiosis at the Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Montana, USA. Of 24 carcasses necropsied, 11 had lesions consistent with avian chlamydiosis, including two that tested positive for infectious Chlamydophila psittaci, and 12 were positive for avian botulism type C. One bird tested positive for both avian botulism type C and C. psittaci. Of 61 appa

Serological survey of infections in waterfowl in the Guadalquivir marshes (Spain).

A serological survey was performed in the Guadalquivir Marshes (Southern Spain) in order to determine the presence and diffusion of six infective agents in wild waterfowl. The analysis covered 712 waterfowl from 13 species belonging to five taxa (Podicipediformes, Ciconiiformes, Anseriformes, Gruiformes, and Charadriiformes). A range of immunological techniques led to detection of antibodies against the six infective agents studied: Chlamydia psittaci (13.3%), Mycoplasma anatis (3.5%), Pasteurella anatipestifer (2.9%), duck plague virus (1.6%), Aspergillus fumigatus (1.1%), and Newcastle disea

A Novel Avian Paramyxovirus (Putative Serotype 15) Isolated from Wild Birds.

In January 2014, a viral hemagglutinating agent named UPO216 was isolated from fecal droppings of wild birds at the UPO wetland in South Korea during an avian influenza surveillance program. Electron microscopy identified the UPO216 virus as an avian paramyxovirus (APMV). Pathogenicity tests and molecular pathotyping revealed that the virus was avirulent in chickens. The UPO216 virus was assigned to a serological group antigenically distinct from known serotypes of APMV (-1, -2, -3, -4, -6, -7, -8, and -9) by hemagglutination inhibition test, despite showing weak cross-reactivity with APMV-1 a

Characterization of fowl adenoviruses isolated between 2007 and 2014 in China.

Forty-three fowl adenovirus (FAdV) strains were isolated in China from 2007 to 2014 from poultry and ostriches with inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) and hydropericardium syndrome (HPS). Phylogenetic analysis showed that 28/43 strains clustered into Fowl aviadenovirus D (FAdV-D) and 9/43 strains clustered into FAdV-E. FAdV-C included three isolates of ostrich origin, one of goose origin and two of chicken origin. Based on hexon loop 1 gene sequencing analysis, these viruses were genetically related to FAdV-4, FAdV-8a, FAdV-8b and FAdV-11, of which FAdV-11 was dominant. The isolation in 2014 of th

The newly emerging duck-origin goose parvovirus in China exhibits a wide range of pathogenicity to main domesticated waterfowl.

Short beak and dwarfism syndrome virus (SBDSV) is a newly emerging distinct duck-origin goose parvovirus that belongs to the genus Dependovirus. Our previous studies have found that SBDSV was highly pathogenic to Cherry Valley ducklings and mule ducklings. However, little is known about its pathogenicity to other waterfowls. In the present study, the pathogenicity of SBDSV was evaluated in domesticated waterfowl including Muscovy ducklings, Sheldrake ducklings and domestic goslings. All experimentally infected birds exhibited remarkable growth retardation, anorexia and diarrhea similar to natu

Duck virus enteritis (duck plague) - a comprehensive update.

Duck virus enteritis (DVE), also called duck plague, is one of the major contagious and fatal diseases of ducks, geese and swan. It is caused by duck enteritis virus (DEV)/Anatid herpesvirus-1 of the genus Mardivirus, family Herpesviridae, and subfamily Alpha-herpesvirinae. Of note, DVE has worldwide distribution, wherein migratory waterfowl plays a crucial role in its transmission within and between continents. Furthermore, horizontal and/ or vertical transmission plays a significant role in disease spread through oral-fecal discharges. Either of sexes from varying age groups of ducks is vuln

Ecological divergence of wild birds drives avian influenza spillover and global spread.

The diversity of influenza A viruses (IAV) is primarily hosted by two highly divergent avian orders: Anseriformes (ducks, swans and geese) and Charadriiformes (gulls, terns and shorebirds). Studies of IAV have historically focused on Anseriformes, specifically dabbling ducks, overlooking the diversity of hosts in nature, including gull and goose species that have successfully adapted to human habitats. This study sought to address this imbalance by characterizing spillover dynamics and global transmission patterns of IAV over 10 years at greater taxonomic resolution than previously considered.

Prevalence of avian influenza viruses and their associated antibodies in wild birds in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in wild birds pose a pandemic threat to humans and to the poultry industry. To assess AIV and AIV antibody prevalence in wild birds in China, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trial, VIP, CNKI, and WANFANG for published papers related to the prevalence of AIVs and their associated antibodies in wild birds in China from Mar. 10, 2005 to Sept. 20, 2018. First case of fatal leucocytozoonosis in domestic ducks in a zoological garden in Japan.

Leucocytozoon spp. are common avian haemosporidian parasites that can cause clinical symptoms with lethal cases in poultry worldwide. However, leucocytozoonosis has not been reported in domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) in Japan. Two adult domestic ducks maintained in a zoological garden in Japan became lethargic, exhibited labored breathing, and died in July 2024. These ducks had hemorrhages in the visceral organs with splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. Megaloschizonts of haemosporidia were histologically observed in the spleen and other organs. Partial sequences of Leucocytozoon mit

Improvement in plaquing methods for the enumeration of anatid herpesvirus (duck plague virus).

The Holland strain of anatid herpesvirus (AHV) was 2-to 10-fold more efficiently plaqued under liquid medium or semisolid medium containing methylcellulose than in media containing agar, agarose, or Nobel agar. Virus adsorption was complete in 45 min, with the maximum virus titers obtained under liquid medium at 48 h postinfection. The AHV dose-response curve was linear. Pekin duck embryo cultures were more efficient than CCL-141 in plaque response and gave the maximum virus yield per cell. Virus titers were independent of avian cell passage number (to 6), fetal or newborn calf sera (to 10% v/

A systematic review of the genus Tyzzeria Allen, 1936 (Chromista: Apicomplexa), including the molecular phylogenetic position of Tyzzeria parvula (Kotlán, 1933) Klimeš, 1963.

Tyzzeria Allen, 1936 is a coccidian genus traditionally associated with Anseriformes, although there are descriptions of Tyzzeria spp. from junglefowls, snakes, skinks and mice. In this sense, the current study performs a taxonomic review of Tyzzeria spp., evaluating those that should be valid, invalid or that require further studies for validation. Along with this review, oocysts morphologically identified as Tyzzeria parvula (Kotlán, 1933) Klimeš, 1963 were recovered from fecal samples of swan geese Anser cygnoid (Linnaeus, 1758) in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, whic
