[Anterior segment inflammation in cataract operation: comparison of intraocular lens implanted in the lens capsule and in the sulcus].

Intracapsular implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract extraction is considered to be more "physiologic" than sulcus implantation. Using a laser flare-cell meter, we measured the degree of anterior segment inflammation in 24 eyes with an IOL implanted in the sulcus and 14 eyes with an IOL implanted "in the bag." All patients were followed for 1 year. The mean flare value was significantly lower in the bag-implanted eyes than in the sulcus-implanted eyes 1 day (p = 0.009) and 3 days (p = 0.012) after surgery; no significant difference in degree of flare was found between the gro

Anterior lens capsule: biomechanical properties and biomedical engineering perspectives.

Anterior lens capsule, as the thickest basement membrane in the body, has its unique physiology characteristics. In ophthalmology, many attempts have been made to culture different kinds of cells including iris pigment epithelial cells, retinal pigment epithelial cells, corneal epithelium and endothelium cells, trabecular meshwork cells etc and anterior lens capsule has been confirmed to be served as an excellent scaffold for the growth and expansion of different ocular cells. Furthermore, anterior lens capsule also has unique potential in gestation evaluation and the treatment of various ocul

Rupture of anterior lens capsule from blunt ocular injury.

We report 3 cases of blunt trauma causing rupture of the anterior lens capsule with cataract formation. The injuries were caused by a paintball gun, a ball-bearing air pistol, and an aluminum rivet. In all 3 cases, the anterior capsule tears were central and the posterior capsules and zonules intact; uneventful cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens was performed. The postoperative visual acuities was 20/40 in 1 case and 20/20 in the other 2 cases. We propose that the anterior lens capsule may have been torn by direct contusion from rapid focal indentation of the cornea o

Observations on lens epithelial cells and their removal in anterior capsule specimens.

We studied the morphology and removal of lens epithelial cells in the following ways. In 49 senile cataractous eyes with a mean (+/- SD) age of 69 +/- 9 years, mean (+/- SD) cell density was 3574 +/- 512 cells/mm2 and mean (+/- SD) cell size was 281 +/- 48 micron 2. With age there was a significant decrease in cell density and an increase in cell size. Immediately after each of the following procedures was performed on the central anterior capsule during routine cataract surgery, the capsule was removed and observed. Procedures used were (1) aspiration, (2) aspiration with ultrasound, (3) inst

Shifting crystalline pseudohypopyon secondary to lens absorption with spontaneous openings in the anterior lens capsule.

This is the first reported case of a crystalline pseudohypopyon presenting as a layer of "snowdrift deposits" that settled inferiorly in the anterior chamber of the eye of a 55-year-old man and was associated with freely floating crystals in the aqueous humor, producing a "snowy Christmas Eve" appearance. The cause was spontaneous openings in the center of the anterior capsule with leaching of the crystalline substance into the anterior chamber. A dense membranous cataract was left after the lens material was partly absorbed. There was no history of trauma, surgery, or known systemic disease,

Morphologic and molecular study on the lens anterior capsule in systemic sclerosis.

This study aimed to analyze the anterior lens capsule specimens from both eyes of a patient with systemic sclerosis and compare them to the eyes of a control patient. No significant differences between systemic sclerosis and control eyes were observed in the results from the hematoxylin-eosin and picrosirius staining. In the samples obtained from both systemic sclerosis and control eyes, there were expressions of caspase, a molecule expressed in cell death by apoptosis. Heparanase was overexpressed in the systemic sclerosis sample compared to the control sample. Therefore, the anterior lens ca

Altered mechanical behavior and properties of the human anterior lens capsule after cataract surgery.

Several studies have quantified the mechanics of the normal lens capsule, motivated in large part by the need to understand better the mechanism of accommodation. In addition to this principal physiologic function, the lens capsule also plays a significant clinical role by housing the prosthetic lens implanted during cataract surgery. This procedure alters dramatically the mechanical environment of the capsule, which may modulate the errant behavior of lens epithelial cells that leads to capsular contraction and deposition of non-native matrix proteins. Although much is known about histologica

Corneal decompensation due to spontaneous absorption of lens and anterior dislocation of lens capsule: A case report.

RATIONALE: Spontaneous absorption of lenses or cataracts is rare. However, lens capsule attachment to the endothelium combined with corneal decompensation can still occur. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 81-year-old male presented with left eye pain and bulbar conjunctival injection for 6 months. Diffuse corneal edema and inferior bullous lesions were observed by slit-lamp microscopy. Following examination with swept-source optical coherence tomography, we could clearly identify a membrane structure adherent to the corneal endothelium, as well as a lens not in situ. In vivo confocal microscopy found dec

Endogenous endophthalmitis complicated by iris abscess and anterior lens capsule rupture.

A patient in her 20s with a history of intravenous drug use presented with deteriorating vision due to endogenous endophthalmitis complicated by an iris abscess. Initial management involved systemic antibiotics, intravitreal antibiotic administration and topical anti-inflammatory treatments. Pharmacologic pupil dilation for synechialysis led to anterior lens capsule rupture and cortical material exposure, necessitating careful ophthalmological monitoring and eventual elective cataract extraction following systemic stabilisation. Multidisciplinary collaboration was crucial, involving infectious
