[Individual anatomical variability of the head of the caudate nucleus and of the putamen in man].

Individual variabilities in form, size and position of the nucleus caudatus head and the putamen have been studied in the horizontal section cutting across the inferior edge of the interventricular foramen (Monro) and the posterior commissure of the cerebrum in 70 mature persons died from various diseases not connected with disorders in the brain. Variability in length, width and position of these strial structures have been estimated taking into account the size of the intercommissural lines. The investigation has demonstrated that with an increasing distance between the anterior and posterio

Glutathione Deficit Affects the Integrity and Function of the Fimbria/Fornix and Anterior Commissure in Mice: Relevance for Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Structural anomalies of white matter are found in various brain regions of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar and other psychiatric disorders, but the causes at the cellular and molecular levels remain unclear. Oxidative stress and redox dysregulation have been proposed to play a role in the pathophysiology of several psychiatric conditions, but their anatomical and functional consequences are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate white matter throughout the brain in a preclinical model of redox dysregulation. METHODS: In a mouse model with impaired glut

Structural brain abnormalities in 12 persons with aniridia.

Background: Aniridia is a disorder predominately caused by heterozygous loss-of-function mutations of the PAX6 gene, which is a transcriptional regulator necessary for normal eye and brain development.  The ocular abnormalities of aniridia have been well characterized, but mounting evidence has implicated brain-related phenotypes as a prominent feature of this disorder as well.  Investigations using neuroimaging in aniridia patients have shown reductions in discrete brain structures and changes in global grey and white matter.  However, limited sample sizes and substantive heterogeneity of str

[Extracranial trigeminal schwannomas with middle temporal fossa development].

A series of 78 patients presenting with agenesis of the cerebral commissures and properly investigated with MR imaging, was reviewed and analyzed morphologically. Results were compared with descriptive data from the literature, and with the developmental models proposed. From this, a model of a-commissural brain is described: the lamina terminalis would be homologous to a telencephalic anterior medullary velum of which the commissure would be the anterior commissure, and the lamina of white matter described as the Probst's and the fornical bundles, would be homologous to a posterior medullary

Neurodevelopmental wiring deficits in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability and occurs due to the trisomy of human chromosome 21. Adolescent and adult brains from humans with Down syndrome exhibit various neurological phenotypes including a reduction in the size of the corpus callosum, hippocampal commissure and anterior commissure. However, it is unclear when and how these interhemispheric connectivity defects arise. Using the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome, we examined interhemispheric connectivity in postnatal day 0 (P0) Ts65Dn mouse brains. We find that there is no change in the volume

Anomalies of the corpus callosum: an MR analysis of the phenotypic spectrum of associated malformations.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to categorize the structural brain anomalies associated with abnormalities of the corpus callosum and anterior and hippocampal commissures in a large cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain MR images of adult and pediatric patients from our institution and from a national support organization (the ACC Network) were retrospectively evaluated for the type and severity of commissural anomalies and the presence and type of other structural abnormalities. RESULTS: Of 142 cases that were reviewed, 82 patients had agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), while 60 had hypogenesis of

Comprehensive mapping of the thalamic commissures in the rodent brain.

Brain commissures are antiparallel white matter fiber bundles that connect both hemispheres across the midsagittal plane at different anatomical levels. In the mammalian brain, the best-known commissures are the corpus callosum, the anterior and the posterior commissures. Recent studies have identified a new white matter pathway, the thalamic commissures (TCs), that connect the cortex to the contralateral thalamus in rodents and primates. However, the specific cortical regions that project via the TCs and their target thalamic nuclei are still unknown. To thoroughly and accurately map this pro

Molecular regulation of the developing commissural plate.

Coordinated transfer of information between the brain hemispheres is essential for function and occurs via three axonal commissures in the telencephalon: the corpus callosum (CC), hippocampal commissure (HC), and anterior commissure (AC). Commissural malformations occur in over 50 human congenital syndromes causing mild to severe cognitive impairment. Disruption of multiple commissures in some syndromes suggests that common mechanisms may underpin their development. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging revealed that forebrain commissures crossed the midline in a highly specific manner w

Alternate Seizure Spread with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a brain malformation that can occur in isolation or in conjunction with other congenital or developmental defects. The clinical sequelae of this condition include epilepsy, cognitive deficits, developmental delay, and various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Here we present the case of a patient with congenital complete agenesis of the corpus callosum and medically refractory epilepsy who underwent stereoelectroencephalography. This identified a left frontal ictal focus and revealed that contralateral spread occurred though the anterior commissure, a r

Septo-optic dysplasia with cerebellar hypoplasia in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

Little is known about the neuropathology of Cornelia de Lange syndrome. We report a unique type of cerebral malformation combined with Cornelia de Lange syndrome in a 5-year-old female child. At autopsy, the optic systems, hypothalamic nuclei, corpus callosum and cerebellar vermis were hypoplastic, and the septum pellucidum, fornix and anterior commissure were rudimentary. The brain had malformative features of septo-optic dysplasia combined with commissural dysplasia and cerebellar vermian hypoplasia. This case suggests an interrelationship between Cornelia de Lange syndrome and midline devel

Mitral valve repair in a child with infectious endocarditis followed by meningitis.

A one-year-old boy without congenital cardiac anomaly suffered from meningitis and subsequent acute infective endocarditis that resulted in mitral regurgitation. During antibiotic therapy and management of congestive heart failure, he suddenly developed an acute subdural hematoma, and an aneurysm of the cerebral artery was detected by brain computed tomography. Clipping of the aneurysm was performed by neurosurgery, and 9 days after clipping, we performed mitral valve repair. Kay-Reed annuloplasty was performed and annulus size was reduced from 20 to 16 mm, and edge to edge repair of anterior

The homeodomain protein vax1 is required for axon guidance and major tract formation in the developing forebrain.

The homeodomain protein Vax1 is expressed in a highly circumscribed set of cells at the ventral anterior midline of the embryonic CNS. These cells populate the choroid fissure of the optic disk, the body of the optic stalk and nerve, the optic chiasm and ventral diencephalon, and the anterior midline zones that abut developing commissural tracts. We have generated mutant mice that lack Vax1. In these mice (1) the optic disks fail to close, leading to coloboma and loss of the eye-nerve boundary; (2) optic nerve glia fail to associate with and appear to repulse ingrowing retinal axons, resulting

The development of a simple scaffold of axon tracts in the brain of the embryonic zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio.

We have examined neuronal differentiation and the formation of axon tracts in the embryonic forebrain and midbrain of the zebrafish, between 1 and 2 days postfertilisation. Axons were visualised with three techniques; immunocytochemistry (using HNK-1 and antiacetylated tubulin antibodies) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelling in whole-mounted brains, and transmission electron microscopy. Differentiation was monitored by histochemical staining for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). These independent methods demonstrated that a simple grid of tracts and commissures forms the initial axon scaffold

Neurochemical abnormalities in unmedicated bipolar depression and mania: a 2D 1H MRS investigation.

The neurobiology and neurochemistry of bipolar disorder and its different phases are poorly understood. This study investigated metabolite abnormalities in both unmedicated bipolar depression as well as mania using 2D 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI). MRSI data were obtained from 24 unmedicated bipolar disorder (BP) subjects (12 (hypo)manic (BPM)) and 12 depressed (BPD), and 20 closely matched healthy controls. 2D 1H MRSI data were collected from a 15-mm axial slice placed along the anterior commissure-posterior commissure (AC-PC) line to measure brain metabolites bilaterally

A basic MRI anatomy of the rat brain in coronal sections for practical guidance to neuroscientists.

Identification of the brain structures in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rat is very important for the experimental work of many neuroscientists. Our intention was to recognize most of the structures without overlapping the MRI sections with the histological templates. Three live rats were used for this study who were examined in a micro-MRI apparatus by performing T2-weighted sequences in serial brain sections. Most of the white matter structures were easily identified, e.g. the anterior commissure, corpus callosum with forceps minor and major, cingulum, external and internal cap

Heterozygosity for Nuclear Factor One X in mice models features of Malan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear Factor One X (NFIX) haploinsufficiency in humans results in Malan syndrome, a disorder characterized by overgrowth, macrocephaly and intellectual disability. Although clinical assessments have determined the underlying symptomology of Malan syndrome, the fundamental mechanisms contributing to the enlarged head circumference and intellectual disability in these patients remains undefined. METHODS: Here, we used Nfix heterozygous mice as a model to investigate these aspects of Malan syndrome. Volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to calculate the volumes of 20

A quantitative histological study of the effects of acute triethyl lead poisoning on the adult mouse brain.

The effects of a single injection of triethyl lead chloride on the mouse brain was studied 1, 3, 5, 7 and 30 days postinjection using quantitative histological techniques. The total number of glia in the anterior commissure was significantly reduced following injection but by 30 days postinjection had returned to normal. The number of neurons and the number of glia in the indusium griseum did not change significantly. The number of mitotic cells in the subependymal layer fell slightly from 1 to 3 days postinjection then returned to normal 5 days postinjection. The number of pyknotic cells in t

The transcallosal interforniceal approach to the third ventricle: anatomic and microsurgical aspects.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to visualize median-sagittal brain structures by magnetic resonance imaging improves planning for surgery to treat lesions of the third ventricle. The most appropriate path to the third ventricle is the transcallosal approach. The present study was undertaken to describe the surgical anatomy and landmarks encountered during this approach. METHODS: The transcallosal-interforniceal approach was undertaken in 30 formalin-fixed brains using an operating microscope. The surface landmarks for the approach pathway were the two points, P5 and P7, located 5 and 7 cm anterior to

Deficient corpus callosum in hybrids between ddN and three other abnormal mouse strains.

The mouse strain ddN from Japan was crossed with three other inbred strains prone to absence of the corpus callosum (BALB/cWah1, I/LnJ and 129/ReJ), and at least one brain with abnormally small corpus callosum was observed in offspring from each F1 hybrid cross. Data for several polymorphic protein markers revealed that the four strains are not closely related genetically. Nevertheless, they share common genetic causes of an absent corpus callosum, which helps to understand why anatomical studies of ddN and BALB/c have yielded similar results. The hippocampal commissure is abnormally small in
