Nationwide trends in the use of antitussive agents in Japan before, during, and after the COVID-19 Pandemic: A descriptive study using a National Database.

Antitussive agents are widely prescribed in Japan regardless of the underlying disease, which contradicts clinical guidelines. External factors such as the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent changes may have influenced these prescription patterns; however, the extent remains unclear. In this descriptive study, we used NDB Open Data (2018-2022) to analyze the annual prescription volumes, costs, and drug categories for antitussive agents (including centrally acting and Kampo medicines) and medications for chronic diseases. Prescriptions for both centrally acting agents and Kampo medicines remai

Malva parviflora Leaves and Fruits Mucilage as Natural Sources of Anti-Inflammatory, Antitussive and Gastro-Protective Agents: A Comparative Study Using Rat Models and Gas Chromatography.

Malva parviflora L., Little mallow, has been traditionally used as an alternative food source. It acts as a medicinal herb containing a potential source of mucilage thus herein; we aimed to assess the toxicity, anti-inflammatory, antitussive and gastro-protective actions of M. parviflora mucilage extracted from its leaves (MLM) and fruit (MFM). Toxicity studies were investigated by in vitro hemolytic assay whereas acute anti-inflammatory and antitussive activities were assessed by carrageenan-induced paw edema and sulphur dioxide induced cough model in rats, respectively. Gastro-protective eff

Misdiagnosis and mistreatment of a common side-effect--angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor-induced cough.

AIMS: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are frequently prescribed for various cardiovascular and renal diseases. A common side-effect of these drugs is a persistent dry cough. Physicians who fail to recognize a dry cough to be ACEi-related may attempt to treat it with antitussive agents instead of recommended ACEi substitution. Prescription behaviour in the general population considering treatment of the side-effect with antitussive agents has not been studied before. METHODS: Drug dispensing data between 2000 and 2007 were retrieved from the IADB.nl database. A prescription seq

Evidence for a central site of action for the antitussive effects of caramiphen.

The antitussive properties of caramiphen edisylate were studied in the decerebrate cat in which cough was elicited by direct electrical stimulation of the cough center. In this preparation dextromethorphan hydrobromide was compared to caramiphen as an antitussive agent. Dextromethorphan was somewhat more potent when given i.v. as well as when given directly into the left vertebral artery (i.a.). Both agents were far more effective when given i.a. than when given i.v. The effective dose ratios of i.v./i.a. were about 12 and 14 for caramiphen and 11 and 7 for dextromethorphan (actual and cumulat

Studies on the localization of central cough mechanism; site of action of antitussive drugs.

The localization of the central cough mechanism was studied by electrically stimulating the lower brainstem in cats lightly anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium or in unanesthetized midcollicular decerebrate preparations. Cough responses were recorded with the aid of a microphone. The cough responsive region was concentrated in an area dorsomedial to the trigeminal tract and nucleus. The sites of action of antitussive agents (dextromethorphan, codeine, clonazepam, diazepam and caramiphen) were studied on the centrally induced cough responses. Each of these drugs was administered intravenousl

Evaluation of antitussive potential of Ionidium suffruticosam Ging. (Violaceae) extract in albino mice.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antitussive potential of methanol extract of Ionidium suffruticosam Ging. (Violaceae) which was investigated for its effect on a cough model induced by sulfur dioxide gas in albino mice. It exhibited significant dose-dependent antitussive activity when compared with the control, 250 and 500 mg/kg (p.o.) of the extract showing 28.37% and 54.16% inhibition of the cough with respect to control group. The antitussive activity of the extract was comparable to that of codeine phosphate, a prototype antitussive agent.

Antitussive potential of methanol extract of stem bark of Ficus racemosa Linn.

The methanol extract of Ficus racemosa Linn (Moraceae) (stem bark) (MEFR) was tested for its antitussive potential against a cough induced model by sulphur dioxide gas in mice. The extract demonstrated significant (p < 0.001) antitussive activity at all tested dose levels when compared with the control. The antitussive activity of the extract was comparable to that of codeine phosphate (10 mg), a standard antitussive agent. The extract exhibited maximum inhibition of 56.9% at a dose of 200 mg/kg (p.o.) 90 min after administration.

Current and future peripherally-acting antitussives.

Cough is among the most common complaints for which medical evaluation is sought. The clinical significance of this problem is evidenced by the enormous financial expenditure on prescription and non-prescription cough remedies worldwide. Centrally-acting antitussive agents, such as opiates, are often associated with undesirable or intolerable side effects, including sedation, nausea, and constipation. Therefore, safe and effective peripherally-acting antitussive agents are particularly desirable. Relatively few commercially-available products suppress cough through a peripheral mechanism of ac

Antitussive effect of herbal medicine bakumondo-to: a case report.

A 50 year-old woman with progressive systemic sclerosis accompanied by interstitial pneumonia complained of a dry cough. A variety of antitussive agents were given for the dry cough over a one year period, but her symptoms continued. However, when a herbal medicine Bakumondo-to was administered, her intractable dry cough subsided dramatically within 10 days. Bakumondo-to may be a good antitussive agent for interstitial pneumonia associated with a dry cough that is resistant to other antitussives.

Antitussive activity of ethanolic extract of Curcuma aromatica rhizomes on sulfur dioxide induced cough in mice.

Ethanolic extract of rhizomes of Curcuma aromatica (Zingiberaceae) was investigated for its antitussive effect on Sulfur dioxide induced cough model in mice. The extract exhibited significant antitussive activity in a dose dependant manner. The activity was compared with the prototype antitussive agent codeine phosphate. The ethanolic extract at the dose of lOOmg. 200mg and 400mg/kg body weight, po, showed 68%, 74% and 79% of inhibition of cough with respect to control group.

Central regulation of the cough reflex: therapeutic implications.

In many species including humans, antagonists of NMDA-type glutamate receptors such as dextromethorphan, when used at sufficient doses, have been found to be relatively safe and effective antitussives. Similarly, now in five different species (guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs and pigs), neurokinin receptor antagonists have also proven to be safe and effective antitussive agents. Both of these classes of drugs act centrally to prevent cough. A brief review of what is known about the central encoding of cough is presented, as are the advantages of centrally acting antitussives. Also discussed ar

[Social psychiatric study of the over-the-counter antitussive drug abuse; shifts resulting from modification of the formulae].

We surveyed 22 patients (of whom 4 were women) with a history of antitussive drug abuse at a psychiatric hospital in the suburbs of Tokyo and at the Clinical Institute for Addiction Problems from 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1991. for changes in their pattern of abuse after the composition was altered. Here are our findings: 1) Researchers have long differed on whether ephedrine or codeine was responsible for the abuse of over-the-counter antitussive agents. The present study revealed that although codeine was still present in the new Bron syrup, its abuse was clearly on the decline in Japan, leadin
