Morbid obesity has become a very common problem worldwide, causing severe health-related consequences including cardiovascular or metabolic diseases, arthritis, sleep apnea, or an increased risk of cancer. Bariatric surgery was shown to be the only way to achieve sustainable weight loss and to decrease the frequency and severity of metabolic and cardiovascular comorbidities. The purpose of this article is to present a case of bariatric surgery complicated with lesion of the aorta with a lethal outcome.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper was to develop a scoring system to grade the risk of rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in individual patients.
METHODS: Computed tomography angiography of an AAA were coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) evaluation performed using open source software (ElmerSolver, Institute of Technology, Espoo, Finland). CFD criteria studied were: Oscillatory Shear Index (OSI), time averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) and residence relative time (RRT) on both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models. AAA rupture predictors were analyzed a

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has been used for traumatic and acute spontaneous rupture of the descending thoracic aorta with good results. We present the case of a 40-year-old male whose thoracic spinal prosthesis eroded through the descending thoracic aorta; the aortic disruption was successfully managed with emergent deployment of an endovascular stent.

Aortic injuries can easily be missed in polytraumatized patients due to either associated injuries or vagueness of physical examination findings. Especially in young adults without associated injuries, relatively low atherosclerotic changes may limit the dissection of traumatic descending aortic injuries. We present a 34-year-old male patient who only had a complaint of back pain following a traffic accident. Upon detection of no abnormalities on plain X-ray films, he was discharged home with analgesics. One week later, he presented with dypsnea and dysphagia. Aortography showed rupture of the

Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta is a life-threatening injury with a high mortality, and is difficult to manage in polytraumatized patients. Between 1980 and 1998, 50 patients were admitted to our Department with acute traumatic aortic rupture (TAR). The site of lesion was usually isthmic (86% of patients). From 1980 to 1992, 21 patients (Group I) underwent emergency surgical repair; from 1992 to January 1998, 29 patients (Group II) underwent intensive medical treatment, except one who was haemodynamically unstable and died 8h after the trauma from a massive haemothorax before an emerge

A four-channeled aortic dissection is quite rare, which is a highly life-threatening situation predisposing to aortic rupture. We report a successful management of a four-channeled aortic dissection and an aortic rupture in a 59-year-old woman with Marfan's syndrome 11 years after an initial Bentall procedure for DeBakey type I dissection. The total arch and the descending thoracic aorta were replaced under deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest.

The traumatic aortic rupture has an extremely high spontaneous mortality rate. Important for surviving the trauma is a fast and efficient diagnostic procedure. The suspected diagnosis results from relatively typical criteria in the chest radiograph, especially the continuous widening of the mediastinum. The diagnostic procedure of 26 patients with polytrauma, abnormal chest radiograph and further examinations (intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography [i.a.DSA]: n = 10, contrast-enhanced CT: n = 19, CT and DSA: n = 5) was reviewed. Six patients had an aortic rupture. In 4 patients the dia

Wakeboarding is a sport associated with various types of injuries, primarily affecting the upper and lower limbs. In this case, a 44-year-old man fell from a ramp while wakeboarding and barely managed to reach the shore before dying shortly afterward. An autopsy revealed a complete rupture of the thoracic aorta along with a fracture of the fourth thoracic vertebra. It is likely that several mechanisms contributed to these injuries, either individually or in combination: concussive, rotational, and tensile forces. Additionally, it is plausible that the rupture occurred in two stages, with an in

INTRODUCTION: Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) includes the disease processes of aortic dissection, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, and intramural hematoma. This case demonstrates an atypical presentation of the disease and offers approaches to potentially prevent missed diagnoses.
CASE REPORT: An 87-year-old female with hypertension and Alzheimer's dementia presented to the emergency department with stable vital signs and a chief complaint of throat pain. Initial work-up was significant for ischemia on electrocardiogram and elevated troponin. Computed tomography of the soft tissue neck reveale

Road traffic accidents are the main cause of traumatic aortic ruptures, mostly in combination with other severe injuries. The pre-hospital mortality rate is high. Suspected aortic trauma, following a high traumatic aortic injury score, is an indication for computer tomography. Injuries are triaged and the treatment priority of the aortic trauma is ascertained based on the severity of the aortic and concomitant injuries and the condition of the patient. Until definitive treatment of the aortic lesion is completed, the blood pressure of the patient must be kept low. Grade I and II lesions can be

The immediate death rate for aortic rupture caused by pointed and sharp-edged instruments is very high; however, delayed aortic rupture following the trauma is rarely reported. A patient who had an upper abdominal stab wound was sent to our hospital, and an emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed. No traumatic aortic rupture was found at that time. However, on the fifth day after surgery, aortic rupture occurred, and a large retroperitoneal hematoma was formed. The patient eventually died. Aortic rupture was confirmed by a second emergency exploratory laparotomy and the autopsy. The inf

This report focuses on 3 cases of traumatic aortic dissection or rupture at the isthmus. We selected 3 different methods of treatment. In the 1st case, we performed an emergency operation with graft replacement of the proximal descending aorta. In the 2nd case, we performed elective graft replacement 5 months after the rupture under careful blood pressure control. Thirdly, we performed emergency stent grafting at the isthmus, the rupture site. All cases were successfully treated, but it remains difficult to select the method of treatment for multisystem disorder. Our current strategy for traum

Intimal angiosarcomas are rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Complete surgical resection is essential, but long-term survival is unlikely. We report a patient who presented with a contained ruptured infrarenal aorta with clinical and radiologic findings suggestive of infectious aortitis. Surgical resection, regional debridement, and reconstruction were completed using a cadaveric arterial homograft. However, pathologic evaluation revealed a high-grade intimal sarcoma.

Mortality in poultry due to aortic rupture is characterized by sudden death. The condition is seen in fast-growing male turkeys but has also been described in chickens, ostriches, and waterfowl. Losses in affected flocks usually only reach 1-2%. Post-mortem examination shows a large blood clot in the abdominal cavity subsequent to a dissecting aneurysm. Fragmentation of elastic fibres and degenerative changes of smooth muscle cells are seen in the region of the rupture. Intimal sclerotic plaques are present adjacent to the site of rupture. Copper deficiency, hypertension, hormonal influences,

INTRODUCTION: Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (RAAA) can take place in one of the 4 following ways: 1. "Open" rupture in the free peritoneal cavity; 2. "Closed" rupture with formation of retroperitoneal haematoma; 3. Rupture into surrounding cavity structures, such as veins and bowels; 4. In rare cases rupture is effectively "sealed of" by the surrounding tissue reaction, and retroperitoneal haematoma is "chronically" contained [1]. The terms "sealed" [2], "spontaneously healed" [3], "leakig" [4] RAAA, were also used in the previous papers connected to this situation. The "sealed" ruptur

A case of liquid lye ingestion with late aortic rupture is reported. The rupture occurred 44 days after the lye ingestion. This case report shows that the lye induced tissue damage has a long duration and may lead to late aortic rupture, especially if there is an additional trauma to the esophagus due to dilatation and perforation of the esophageal wall.

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is a cardiovascular emergency associated with a 30 day mortality as high as 70 %. However, recent progresses in the management of these patients have improved the results. From a surgical point of view, endovascular methods such as balloon occlusion and endovascular repair (EVAR) in patients with suitable anatomy are recommended in order to reduce mortality.

After developing sudden severe chest pain, an 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency room with chest pain and palpitations and was unable to stand up. The sudden onset of chest pain was first reported while swimming at school about 30 minutes prior to presentation. Arterial blood pressure (BP) was 150/90 mmHg, heart rate was 120/minute, and the chest pain was combined with shortness of breath and diaphoresis. During the evaluation in the emergency room, the chest pain worsened and abdominal pain developed. An aortic dissection was suspected and a chest and abdomen CT was obtained. The diag
