Health Status and Pathogen Surveillance in Free-Ranging Nancy Ma's Night Monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) along the Amazonian Tri-Border Region.

Nancy Ma's night monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) are significantly impacted by illegal trafficking along the tri-border region between Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. Night monkeys previously used for biomedical research have been released into natural forests along the tri-border region posing a health and conservation threat to local wild monkey populations. We evaluated the health of 55 adult night monkeys during two sampling periods (2018 and 2023) along the tri-border region through clinical evaluation, determination of ectoparasite presence, and through surveillance via PCR of oral swabs and blood

Ureteral fibroepithelial polyp in an owl monkey (Aotus nancymae).

Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps are benign mesodermal tumors in humans that occur predominantly in the proximal ureter. During a routine necropsy of a wild-caught, research naïve, adult, male, Aotus nancymae, the left ureter just distal to the renal pelvis contained a pedunculated, lobulated neoplasm with a narrow stalk at the base projecting into the lumen. The left renal pelvis was found to be mildly dilated. The histologic characteristics of the ureteral mass were consistent with a fibroepithelial polyp. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing a ureteral fibroepithelial polyp

Dietary induction of cholesterol gallstones in the owl monkey: preliminary findings in a new animal model.

The owl monkey (Aotus nancymae) is a primate with a bile acid and biliary lipid profile resembling that of humans. Aotus spp. are among the rare species, including humans, that spontaneously develop cholesterol gallstones. With dietary induction the owl monkey proved a rapid, reliable model of cholesterol cholelithiasis. Six owl monkeys, three of each sex, were fed a diet supplemented with 1.5% cholesterol for 5 weeks. Each week blood samples were drawn for cholesterol determination, and bile samples were obtained by ultrasound-guided percutaneous aspiration of the gallbladder. Weekly ultrasou

Fatal toxoplasmosis in free-ranging Colombian night monkeys (Aotus lemurinus) from a peri-urban area of Cali, southwestern Colombia.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed protozoan parasite capable of causing severe disease in highly susceptible hosts, including Neotropical non-human primates. We report two cases of fatal toxoplasmosis in free-ranging Colombian night monkeys (Aotus lemurinus) from a peri-urban area of Cali, southwestern Colombia. An adult male carrying an infant and an adult pregnant female were found moribund or dead and submitted for necropsy and histopathological evaluation. Both individuals exhibited severe multisystemic lesions characterized by necrosis and abundant intralesional tachyzoites cons

Insights into an Optimization of Plasmodium vivax Sal-1 In Vitro Culture: The Aotus Primate Model.

Malaria is one of the most significant tropical diseases, and of the Plasmodium species that cause human malaria, P. vivax is the most geographically widespread. However, P. vivax remains a relatively neglected human parasite since research is typically limited to laboratories with direct access to parasite isolates from endemic field settings or from non-human primate models. This restricted research capacity is in large part due to the lack of a continuous P. vivax in vitro culture system, which has hampered the ability for experimental research needed to gain biological knowledge and develo

Congenital radial and thumb aplasia in a neonatal owl monkey (Aotus nancymaae).

This report describes congenital radial and thumb aplasia in a neonatal owl monkey. Congenital limb deformities in human neonates and Old World primate species have been well characterized. The many probable causes of these congenital defects in skeletal structure include fetal exposure to environmental toxins and genetic influences. In nonhuman primates, the cause frequently remains undetermined. In the case we present, the neonate presented for examination because of inability to cling to the dam. The forelimbs were contracted distally, and thumbs were absent. Radiographs indicated complete

Research and in situ conservation of owl monkeys enhances environmental law enforcement at the Colombian-Peruvian border.

This study reports on impacts of illegal trade in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae, A. vociferans) for the biomedical research market in the Colombian-Peruvian Amazonian border. Through freedom of information requests and interviews with hunters we found that 912 owl monkeys, including A. nancymaae captured in Peru, were trapped over a 3-month period in 2012 to supply a malaria research facility based in Leticia, Colombia, which had trapping permits for the use of only 800 A. vociferans annually yet experimentation took place using A. nancymaae. High levels of extraction in Peru have had populatio

A primate genesis model of focal dystonia and repetitive strain injury: I. Learning-induced dedifferentiation of the representation of the hand in the primary somatosensory cortex in adult monkeys.

In this study we tested a neuroplasticity/learning origins hypothesis for repetitive strain injuries (RSIs), including occupationally induced focal dystonia. Repetitive movements produced in a specific form and in an appropriate behavioral context cause a degradation of the sensory feedback information controlling fine motor movements, resulting in the "learned" genesis of RSIs. Two adult New World owl monkeys were trained at a behavioral task that required them to maintain an attended grasp on a hand grip that repetitively and rapidly (20 msec) opened and closed over short distances. The monk

Area 17 lesions deactivate area MT in owl monkeys.

The middle temporal visual area, MT, is one of three major targets of the primary visual cortex, area 17, in primates. We assessed the contribution of area 17 connections to the responsiveness of area MT neurons to visual stimuli by first mapping the representation of the visual hemifield in MT of anesthetized owl monkeys with microelectrodes, ablating an electrophysiologically mapped part of area 17, and then immediately remapping MT. Before the lesions, neurons at recording sites throughout MT responded vigorously to moving slits of light and other visual stimuli. In addition, the relationsh

Detection of early myocardial cell death in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymai) using complement component C9 immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded heart tissues: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Owl monkeys are commonly used in biomedical research which is affected by the high incidence of cardiomyopathy in this species. Occasionally, owl monkeys with no clinical signs of heart disease are found dead and at necropsy show no, or very mild, cardiomyopathy. A possible explanation for sudden death is acute myocardial infarction; however, early myocardial changes may be difficult to assess by conventional stains and light microscopy. METHODS: Complement component C9 immunohistochemistry was performed in paraffin-embedded heart tissue samples from owl monkeys who died suddenly,

Eosinophilic aortitis with thoracic aortic aneurysm and rupture in a captive-born owl monkey.

Eosinophilic aortitis is a rare condition in animals and humans, and it has been occasionally reported associated with parasitic migration and with a poorly understood complex group of autoimmune vasculitides. Here, we describe a case of eosinophilic aortitis with thoracic aortic aneurysm and rupture in a captive-born owl monkey and discuss the differential diagnoses.

Using the PfEMP1 head structure binding motif to deal a blow at severe malaria.

Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria causes 200 million cases worldwide, 8 million being severe and complicated leading to ∼1 million deaths and ∼100,000 abortions annually. Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) has been implicated in cytoadherence and infected erythrocyte rosette formation, associated with cerebral malaria; chondroitin sulphate-A attachment and infected erythrocyte sequestration related to pregnancy-associated malaria and other severe forms of disease. An endothelial cell high activity binding peptide is described in several of this ∼300 kDa hypervariabl

Growth and microanatomy of the paranasal sinuses in two species of New World monkeys.

Paranasal sinuses of living apes and humans grow with positive allometry, suggesting a novel mechanism for bone enlargement. Here, we examine the paranasal sinuses of the owl monkey (Aotus spp.) and a tamarin (Saguinus midas) across postnatal development. The prediction that paranasal sinuses grow disproportionately faster than the main nasal chamber is tested. We used diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography and histology to study sinuses in eight Aotus and three tamarins ranging from newborn to adult ages. Sinuses were segmented at the mucosa-air cavity interface and mea

A primate model for studying focal dystonia and repetitive strain injury: effects on the primary somatosensory cortex.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Job-related repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) are increasing, and current treatment strategies often fail to return injured people to work. This study documented the neural consequences of using two different movement strategies for active, repetitive hand closing and opening. METHODS: Two owl monkeys were trained for 20 weeks to repetitively close a handpiece against an 80-g force (3-400 trials per day, training at 80%-90% accuracy). One monkey used a highly articulated hand-squeezing strategy, and the other monkey used a proximal arm-pulling strategy. Changes in moto

Spontaneous cardiomyopathy resembling acute rheumatic heart disease in an owl monkey.

A wild-caught male Aotus vociferans died spontaneously during quarantine. Histologic examination of the heart showed several small myocardial arteries replaced with fibrinoid necrosis and adjacent inflammation that included lymphocytes and large histiocytic cells. Less often, similar inflammatory foci were observed in the myocardium interstitium. The lesions observed in the heart of the owl monkey resembled Aschoff bodies.

Haemoproteus syrnii and other haemosporidians infecting owls from North America.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidians (Haemosporida, Apicomplexa), which include malaria parasites, are found in nearly all terrestrial ecosystems. Avian haemosporidians have been extensively studied; however, there is limited information on parasites in owls (order Strigiformes). Here, haemosporidians infecting North American owls were characterized using an integrative methodology. METHODS: Taking advantage of injured/dead owls from rehabilitation centres in the central and northeastern USA, 53 individuals of Bubo virginianus, Strix varia, Megascops asio, Bubo scandiacus, Aegolius acadicus, and Tyto

Various PfRH5 polymorphisms can support Plasmodium falciparum invasion into the erythrocytes of owl monkeys and rats.

Aotus nancymaae, the owl monkey, provides a useful laboratory model for research to develop drugs and vaccines against human falciparum malaria; however, many Plasmodium falciparum parasites are unable to invade A. nancymaae erythrocytes, rendering the parasites noninfective to the monkeys. In previous work, we identified a key polymorphism that determined the inheritance of erythrocyte invasion in a genetic cross of two P. falciparum clones that were virulent (GB4) or noninfective (7G8) to A. nancymaae. This polymorphism, an isoleucine-to-lysine polymorphism at position 204 (I204K) of the GB4

Hematology and Serum Biochemistry Reference Intervals for Captive-Born Owl Monkeys (Aotus nancymae): Effects of Age and Sex.

BACKGROUND: Owl monkeys (Aotus spp.) are a nocturnal nonhuman primate (NHP) native to central and South America that are used as infectious disease research models for human diseases, such as malaria and human immunodeficiency virus. Natural and infectious diseases may cause alterations in the hematology and serum biochemistry values, which necessitate the availability of reliable reference intervals for healthy animals. METHODS: In this study, hematology and serum chemistry reference intervals for Aotus nancymae were calculated from 191 healthy animals (95 female, 96 male) and were generated

Comparison of blood and urine analytes between two karyotypes of owl monkey, Aotus nancymae and Aotus vociferans.

Serum and urine analytes were compared between two karyotypes of owl monkey, Aotus nancymae and A. vociferans, to determine if normative clinical pathology data obtained from one karyotype were applicable to the other. Statistically significant differences (P < or = 0.05) were noted in serum calcium, serum phosphorus, serum sodium, serum potassium, serum urea nitrogen, urine calcium, calcium clearance, and fractional clearance of calcium between the two karyotypes. The results suggest that A. vociferans regulate calcium-phosphorus and electrolyte homeostasis in a manner different from that of

The source of protein in the aqueous humor of the normal monkey eye.

In vivo aqueous fluorophotometry, morphology, and computational modeling were combined to examine the source of protein and the pathway by which protein enters the aqueous humor of monkeys. A computational model was developed to determine the likelihood of a diffusional route for delivering plasma proteins from ciliary body capillaries via the iris to anterior chamber aqueous humor, bypassing the posterior chamber. Model predictions were compared to aqueous fluorophotometric data obtained from monkeys following a single intravenous injection of fluoresceinated horseradish peroxidase (F-HRP, 25
