Efficacy of oral reading in the treatment of two patients with chronic Broca's aphasia.

Two patients with chronic Broca's aphasia participated in an oral reading treatment program. A multiple baseline design across responses was used. Materials consisted of 90 sentences randomly divided into three groups. Baseline performance was established; then each group of sentences was trained sequentially for 10 sessions. At the end of each session, oral reading performance was probed. For both patients, results indicated increases in accuracy of oral reading of treated materials, with maintenance of performance following termination of treatment. However, generalization to oral reading of

Comprehension of three-argument clitic left dislocations in Catalan Broca's aphasia.

People with Broca's aphasia have difficulty understanding certain syntactic structures, but the cause remains debated. This study investigates the comprehension of clitic left dislocations with three thematic roles in Catalan, compared to declaratives (with and without indirect object clitics) and subject topicalisations. These understudied structures are useful for testing the hypothesis that comprehension deficits result from intervention effects due to processing deficits. We conducted a sentence-picture matching task with eight individuals with Broca's aphasia and eight matched controls. R

Speech entrainment enables patients with Broca's aphasia to produce fluent speech.

A distinguishing feature of Broca's aphasia is non-fluent halting speech typically involving one to three words per utterance. Yet, despite such profound impairments, some patients can mimic audio-visual speech stimuli enabling them to produce fluent speech in real time. We call this effect 'speech entrainment' and reveal its neural mechanism as well as explore its usefulness as a treatment for speech production in Broca's aphasia. In Experiment 1, 13 patients with Broca's aphasia were tested in three conditions: (i) speech entrainment with audio-visual feedback where they attempted to mimic a

Effect of lexical cues on the production of active and passive sentences in Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia.

This study compared the sentence production abilities of individuals with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia in an attempt to explore the extent to which impaired lexical retrieval impedes sentence production. The ability to produce active and passive reversible and non-reversible sentences was examined when varying amounts of lexical information was provided. The results showed that both Wernicke's and Broca's aphasic individuals were impaired in passive sentence production and that these difficulties were not overcome when lexical cues (the relevant nouns and uninflected verb) were provided. How

Depression and quality of life in patients with Broca's and subcortical stroke-related aphasia: A comparative study.

AIM: Aphasia, primarily recognized as a language disorder following stroke, often is presented with concurrent emotional and social difficulties, including depression. This study investigated whether the type of aphasia-Broca's or subcortical-may be related to the prevalence of depression and overall quality of life (QOL) in affected individuals. METHODS: The present study involved 46 individuals with chronic aphasia resulting from left hemisphere strokes. Participants were divided into two groups: those with Broca's aphasia and those with subcortical aphasia. Several assessment tools were ut

OBJECTIVES: Aphasia is an acquired language-cognitive disorder that highly affects an individual's speech, language, and communication skills. Recovery from aphasia requires attentive treatment since it is a long and dynamic process. This study aimed to show interactive benefits of combining classical intervention strategies with new technological approaches and demonstrating their effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 individuals with Broca's aphasia were included in the study. The participants were divided into Application-1 Speech and Language Therapy, Application-2 Transcran

Chorea and Broca aphasia induced by diabetic ketoacidosis in a type 1 diabetic patient diagnosed as Moyamoya disease.

We here report one case of hemichorea and Broca aphasia occurred with diabetic ketoacidosis. A 20-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes mellitus had experienced diabetic ketoacidosis fourth time after the onset of diabetes. At the third ketoacidotic episode, the patient was admitted to our hospital for the first time to show hemichorea of the left extremities. Brain computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a high-density area in the right caudate head and low-density area in the right putamen. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) demonstrated a stenosis at the root of the bilateral middle and anter

Intensive therapy induces contralateral white matter changes in chronic stroke patients with Broca's aphasia.

Using a pre-post design, eleven chronic stroke patients with large left hemisphere lesions and nonfluent aphasia underwent diffusion tensor imaging and language testing before and after receiving 15 weeks of an intensive intonation-based speech therapy. This treated patient group was compared to an untreated patient group (n=9) scanned twice over a similar time period. Our results showed that the treated group, but not the untreated group, had reductions in fractional anisotropy in the white matter underlying the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG, pars opercularis and pars triangularis), the r

Speech motor control in fluent and dysfluent speech production of an individual with apraxia of speech and Broca's aphasia.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is typically described as a motor-speech disorder with clinically well-defined symptoms, but without a clear understanding of the underlying problems in motor control. A number of studies have compared the speech of subjects with AOS to the fluent speech of controls, but only a few have included speech movement data and if so, this was primarily restricted to the study of single articulators. If AOS reflects a basic neuromotor dysfunction, this should somehow be evident in the production of both dysfluent and perceptually fluent speech. The current study compared motor

A consistent white-matter lesion is associated with network-level structural and functional disconnection in chronic Broca's aphasia.

Broca's aphasia has traditionally been attributed to cortical damage in Broca's area; however, emerging evidence suggests broader network-level dysfunction. This study investigated whether a consistent white-matter lesion underlies Broca's aphasia and how its structural dysconnectivity (SDC) relates to functional network disruption and severity. We analyzed multimodal MRI data from patients with chronic Broca's aphasia (n = 58). Voxel-based lesion overlap mapping (VLOM) revealed a focal white-matter lesion beneath the left central sulcus in 90% of patients with Broca's aphasia. Logistic regres

[Case Report: Broca's Aphasia in a Left-Handed Patient with a Right Brain Infarction and Early Stage Aphonia].

We report a case of Broca's aphasia in a left-handed patient with a right brain infarction. The patient's speech is consistent with a particular type of aphemia, that is, without vocalization except for a few phonemes or words. The patient presented with aphonia in an early stage. The lack of speech could be due to the impairment of the phonological-speech process or speech initialization. This type of aphemia has been reported to involve the right inferior precentral gyrus or right middle and inferior frontal gyri. Our patient had both lesions. The symptom and the lesion of this type of aphem

Adaptation of Melodic Intonation Therapy to Greek: A Clinical Study in Broca's Aphasia With Brain Perfusion SPECT Validation.

Melodic intonation therapy (MIT) is one of the most well-known treatment methods which is based on pitch and rhythm and was developed to increase verbal output in adults with non-fluent aphasia. Although MIT has been adapted to several languages, in Greece it is almost unknown. The aim of the proposed study is twofold: (1) to translate and adapt the MIT to the Greek language, and (2) to conduct an experimental study in order to examine the effect of MIT on Greek patients with Broca's aphasia. To this aim, a 64-year-old, right-handed male who had a 6-year primary school education level, no musi

Case of Broca's Aphasia as an expression of cerebral decompression sickness with advanced non-invasive monitoring during HBO₂ treatment.

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of severe CNS decompression sickness (DCS) that included Broca's aphasia in a recreational diver, offering insights into the application of advanced non-invasive monitoring during hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBO₂). CASE REPORT: This 64-year-old male diver experienced the onset of expressive aphasia, vertigo, and right-sided hemiparesis about 30-120 minutes after surfacing following a rapid ascent after a deep dive. DISCUSSION: Initial monitoring with bispectral index (BIS) and density spectral array (DSA) revealed significant asymmetry between cerebral hemisp

From Singing to Speaking: Why Singing May Lead to Recovery of Expressive Language Function in Patients with Broca's Aphasia.

It has been reported that patients with severely nonfluent aphasia are better at singing lyrics than speaking the same words. This observation inspired the development of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a treatment whose effects have been shown, but whose efficacy is unproven and neural correlates remain unidentified. Because of its potential to engage/unmask language-capable regions in the unaffected right hemisphere, MIT is particularly well suited for patients with large left-hemisphere lesions. Using two patients with similar impairments and stroke size/location, we show the effects of M

Lexical processing of vocabulary class in patients with Broca's aphasia: an event-related brain potential study on agrammatic comprehension.

This paper presents electrophysiological evidence of an impairment in the on-line processing of word class information in patients with Broca's aphasia with agrammatic comprehension. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the scalp while Broca patients and non-aphasic control subjects read open- and closed-class words that appeared one at a time on a PC screen. Separate waveforms were computed for open- and closed-class words. The non-aphasic control subjects showed a modulation of an early left anterior negativity in the 210-325ms as a function of vocabulary class (VC), and

Evidence for plasticity in white-matter tracts of patients with chronic Broca's aphasia undergoing intense intonation-based speech therapy.

Recovery from aphasia can be achieved through recruitment of either perilesional brain regions in the affected hemisphere or homologous language regions in the nonlesional hemisphere. For patients with large left-hemisphere lesions, recovery through the right hemisphere may be the only possible path. The right-hemisphere regions most likely to play a role in this recovery process are the superior temporal lobe (important for auditory feedback control), premotor regions/posterior inferior frontal gyrus (important for planning and sequencing of motor actions and for auditory-motor mapping), and

Stratified Efficacy and Peripheral Neuroinflammatory Mechanisms of Jin's Tongue Triple Acupuncture as Adjunctive Therapy for Subacute Post-Stroke Broca Aphasia: A 1:1 PSM Retrospective Cohort Study.

Post-stroke Broca-type motor aphasia is characterized by impaired oral expression and naming function (Cătălin Jianu 2022). Single standardized speech rehabilitation requires a long period for neural remodeling and carries a high risk of long-term deterioration of language function. Jin's tongue triple acupuncture is a targeted tongue acupuncture therapy, which is widely adopted as an adjuvant aphasia intervention in multiple rehabilitation departments nationwide. Existing relevant clinical studies have limitations including small sample sizes, single outcome indicators, lack of stratified eff
