Interactions among three species of cereal aphids simultaneously infesting wheat.

Interactions among greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) were examined on wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L., cultivar TAM 107). Nymphs were released on the plants as conspecific and heterospecific pairs of either first or fourth instars and evaluated for survival, developmental time, fecundity, intra-plant movement, and affinity to plant tissues. Survival from first instar to onset of reproduction averaged 90-100% across all pair combinations. Diuraphis noxia developed faster as conspecifics

Aphid-infested beans divert ant attendance from the rosy apple aphid in apple-bean intercropping.

Ecological intensification of cropping systems aims at restoring multi-functionality while supporting current productivity levels. Intercropping is a form of ecological intensification involving ecological processes beneficial to farmers that do not take place in monocultures. Thus, it represents a practical approach to decrease the use of synthetic inputs such as insecticides in cultivated systems. Whereas insecticide reduction via intercropping-facilitated suppression of aphids is reported in literature, the majority of published studies focussed on herbaceous crops. Thus, the effect of inte

Resistance of sorghum hybrids to sorghum aphid.

The aphid Melanaphis sorghi (Theobald) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), which infest the sorghum crop, has been an economically important pest which have been causing severe damage to sorghum crops in Brazil since 2019. These species have been observed mainly at the end of vegetative stage and beginning of reproductive stage of plants. Their high reproductive rate on sorghum raises concerns about these pests. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the life expectancy and fertility tables of Melanaphis sorghi fed on 15 hybrids of grain sorghum, in order to know the resistance characteristics of

Volatile communication in plant-aphid interactions.

Volatile communication plays an important role in mediating the interactions between plants, aphids, and other organisms in the environment. In response to aphid infestation, many plants initiate indirect defenses through the release of volatiles that attract ladybugs, parasitoid wasps, and other aphid-consuming predators. Aphid-induced volatile release in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana requires the jasmonate signaling pathway. Volatile release is also induced by infection with aphid-transmitted viruses. Consistent with mathematical models of optimal transmission, viruses that are acquir

All 37 Mitochondrial Genes of Aphid Aphis craccivora Obtained from Transcriptome Sequencing: Implications for the Evolution of Aphids.

The availability of mitochondrial genome data for Aphididae, one of the economically important insect pest families, in public databases is limited. The advent of next generation sequencing technology provides the potential to generate mitochondrial genome data for many species timely and cost-effectively. In this report, we used transcriptome sequencing technology to determine all the 37 mitochondrial genes of the cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora. This method avoids the necessity of finding suitable primers for long PCRs or primer-walking amplicons, and is proved to be effective in obtaining th

Widespread infection and diverse infection patterns of Wolbachia in Chinese aphids.

Wolbachia are intracellular symbionts that infect a wide range of arthropods and filarial nematodes. Aphids are engaged in diverse and complex relationships with their endosymbionts. Four supergroups (A, B, M and N) of Wolbachia were previously detected in aphids and supergroups M and N were only found in aphids. In this study, we detected and described Wolbachia infections in natural populations of aphids in China. Three supergroups (A, B and M) were found in the examined aphid species. Supergroup M was preponderant, whereas supergroups A and B were only detected in certain species. Supergrou

An association between phlebotomine sandflies and aphids in the Peruvian Andes.

As the composition of natural sugars in the diet of adult sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) may affect the development of Leishmania (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in sandfly guts, and so play an important role in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis, there is increasing interest in the sources of sugars for wild sandflies. Advanced chromatography techniques have provided indirect evidence that wild sandflies feed on honeydew, a substance released by aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) when feeding. Our objective was to determine whether sandfly density can be influenced directly by t

Honeydew of aphids as a source of sugar for Phlebotomus ariasi.

Wild-caught Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir, starved until their sugar meals had been digested, were caged for 24 h with plants or plants infested with aphids and then tested for fructose, a constituent of plant sap. No evidence was found that the flies took sap directly from nine types of plants present in their habitat. About two-thirds of flies caged with oak (Quercus ilex L.) infested with an aphid [Lachnus roboris (L.)] and about a fifth kept with leaves of the french bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) infested with an aphid took honeydew. Experiments with three other aphid species gave negative res

Exogenous salicylic acid improves resistance of aphid-susceptible wheat to the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Salicylic acid (SA), a phytohormone, has been considered to be a key regulator mediating plant defence against pathogens. It is still vague how SA activates plant defence against herbivores such as chewing and sucking pests. Here, we used an aphid-susceptible wheat variety to investigate Sitobion avenae response to SA-induced wheat plants, and the effects of exogenous SA on some defence enzymes and phenolics in the plant immune system. In SA-treated wheat seedlings, intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), fecundity and apterous rate of S. avenae were 0.25, 31.4 nymphs/female and 64.4%, respec

Evolutionarily entrenched odorant receptors for (E)-β-farnesene signaling in Aphidinae aphids.

Alarm pheromones are crucial for the survival of social insects, enabling coordinated escape from predators. Their evolution has co-evolved with the development of olfactory recognition systems, suggesting specific molecular mechanisms underlie this adaptive relationship. We analyzed alarm pheromone compositions across 36 aphid species and found that EBF serves as the sole or primary alarm signal in the Aphidinae subfamily. Genomic annotation of 13 aphid species identified eight conserved, Aphidinae-specific odorant receptor (OR) clades under strong purifying selection. Three receptors-OR5, OR

A geographic mosaic of trophic interactions and selection: trees, aphids and birds.

Genetic variation in plants is known to influence arthropod assemblages and species interactions. However, these influences may be contingent upon local environmental conditions. Here, we examine how plant genotype-based trophic interactions and patterns of natural selection change across environments. Studying the cottonwood tree, Populus angustifolia, the galling aphid, Pemphigus betae and its avian predators, we used three common gardens across an environmental gradient to examine the effects of plant genotype on gall abundance, gall size, aphid fecundity and predation rate on galls. Three

Phylogenetic and molecular evidence for allochronic speciation in gall-forming aphids (Pemphigus).

Sympatric populations can diverge when variation in phenology or life cycle causes them to mate at distinctly different times. We report patterns consistent with this process (allochronic speciation) in North American gall-forming aphids, in the absence of a host or habitat shift. Pemphigus populi-transversus Riley and P. obesinymphae Aoki form a monophyletic clade within the North American Pemphigus group. They are sympatric on the eastern cottonwood, Populus deltoides (Salicaceae), but have distinctly different life cycles, with sexual stages offset by approximately six months. Field evidenc

Nectar shortage caused by aphids may reduce seed output via pollination interference.

Herbivores decrease plant fitness by consuming reproductive tissues, limiting resources, and/or affecting mutualisms. Although these mechanisms were extensively tested in chewing herbivores, the impact of other functional groups (e.g., sap-feeders) remains poorly understood. We investigated whether aphids affect plant reproduction via direct resource limitation on seed production and/or pollination interference. We compared plant traits and the seed set of naturally aphid-free vs. aphid-infested plants and then manipulated aphid presence and pollen receipt. We used path models to examine the l

Transcriptional Reshaping of Bacteriocytes in the Aphid-Serratia Symbiosis.

The facultative endosymbiont Serratia symbiotica significantly influences the ecological fitness of its aphid host. However, the molecular mechanisms by which Serratia affects the host's symbiotic organ, the bacteriocyte, remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis of bacteriocytes from Serratia- and Serratia+ pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) strains. Our analysis revealed that Serratia colonization extensively modulates gene expression within bacteriocytes. Key metabolic pathways were significantly altered: genes involved in ribosomal biogenesis and oxida

Genome sequence of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum.

Aphids are important agricultural pests and also biological models for studies of insect-plant interactions, symbiosis, virus vectoring, and the developmental causes of extreme phenotypic plasticity. Here we present the 464 Mb draft genome assembly of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. This first published whole genome sequence of a basal hemimetabolous insect provides an outgroup to the multiple published genomes of holometabolous insects. Pea aphids are host-plant specialists, they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, and they have coevolved with an obligate bacterial symbiont. Here we

Pandora neoaphidis transmission and aphid foraging behaviour.

Pandora neoaphidis is an aphid-specific entomopathogen that produces infective conidia. As aphid movement increases, so does the likelihood of contact with conidia. Volatile distress signals released in response to aphid infestation as an indirect defence against herbivory may affect aphid foraging and, therefore, the fungus-aphid interaction. In this study, two different methods were used to investigate the effect of plant volatiles and P. neoaphidis-sporulating cadavers on (1) the colonisation of Vicia faba plants by Acyrthosiphon pisum and (2) P. neoaphidis transmission. This study indicate

Aphid reproductive investment in response to mortality risks.

BACKGROUND: Aphids are striking in their prodigious reproductive capacity and reliance on microbial endosymbionts, which provision their hosts with necessary amino acids and provide protection against parasites and heat stress. Perhaps as a result of this bacterial dependence, aphids have limited immune function that may leave them vulnerable to bacterial pathogens. An alternative, non-immunological response that may be available to infected aphids is to increase reproduction, thereby ameliorating fitness loss from infection. Such a response would reduce the need to mount a potentially energet

Biochemistry and molecular biology of Arabidopsis-aphid interactions.

To ensure their survival in natural habitats, plants must recognize and respond to a wide variety of insect herbivores. Aphids and other Hemiptera pose a particular challenge, because they cause relatively little direct tissue damage when inserting their slender stylets intercellularly to feed from the phloem sieve elements. Plant responses to this unusual feeding strategy almost certainly include recognition of aphid salivary components and the induction of phloem-specific defenses. Due to the excellent genetic and genomic resources that are available for Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), t

Venomous protease of aphid soldier for colony defense.

In social aphids, morphological, behavioral, and physiological differences between soldiers and normal insects are attributed to differences in gene expression between them, because they are clonal offspring parthenogenetically produced by the same mothers. By using cDNA subtraction, we identified a soldier-specific cysteine protease of the family cathepsin B in a social aphid, Tuberaphis styraci, with a second-instar soldier caste. The cathepsin B gene was specifically expressed in soldiers and first-instar nymphs destined to be soldiers. The cathepsin B protein was preferentially produced in
