Males of the green-veined butterfly Pieris napi synthesize and transfer the volatile methyl salicylate (MeS) to females at mating, a substance that is emitted by non-virgin females when courted by males, curtailing courtship and decreasing the likelihood of female re-mating. The volatile is released when females display the 'mate-refusal' posture with spread wings and elevated abdomen, when courted by conspecific males. Here, we assess how the amount of MeS released by courted females changes over time since mating, and whether it is influenced by the frequency with which females display the m

This work aimed to evaluate the effects of the aqueous extract of Vepris afzelii roots on a rat model of hypogonadism. Phytochemical screening and acute toxicity of the extract were performed using different procedures. Hypogonadism was induced orally in adult Wistar rats using cyproterone acetate (30 mg/kg) for ten days. Besides six normal rats (10 ml/kg of distilled water, normal control), 30 hypogonadal rats were subdivided into five groups of six animals each, receiving for 14 days: distilled water (10 ml/kg, hypogonadal control), testosterone (4 mg/kg/3days) and the extract of V. afzelii

Sexual selection theory predicts that the different selection pressures on males and females result in sexual conflict. However, in some instances males and females share a common interest which could lead to sexual cooperation. In the pierid butterfly Pieris napi the male and the recently mated female share a common interest in reducing female harassment by other males soon after mating. Here we show that P. napi males transfer an anti-aphrodisiac to the female at mating, methyl-salicylate (MeS), which is a volatile substance which mated females emit when courted and which makes males quickly

During mating in many butterfly species, males transfer spermatophores that contain anti-aphrodisiacs to females that repel conspecific males. For example, males of the large cabbage white, Pieris brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), transfer the anti-aphrodisiac, benzyl cyanide (BC) to females. Accessory reproductive gland (ARG) secretion of a mated female P. brassicae that is deposited with an egg clutch contains traces of BC, inducing Brussels sprouts plants (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) to arrest certain Trichogramma egg parasitoids. Here, we assessed whether deposition of one egg at a

BACKGROUND: Mucuna pruriens, Tribulus terrestris and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) are widely known as antioxidant effective herbals and have been reported to possess aphrodisiac activities in traditional usages. In this study, we determined the effects of these herbals on sexual functions, serum biochemical parameters, oxidative stress and levels of NF-κB, Nrf2, and HO-1 in reproductive tissues.
METHODS: Thirty-five male rats were divided into five groups: the control group, sildenafil-treated group (5 mg/kg/d), Mucuna, Tribulus and Ashwagandha groups. The extract groups were treated oral

Male sexual dysfunction is a common condition, typically managed with phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitors and testosterone replacement therapy. However, these treatments often have undesirable side effects and are expensive, prompting interest in plant-based alternatives. This study investigated the aphrodisiac and androgenic potential of Tribulus cistoides (T. cistoides) in a nicotine-induced model of sexual dysfunction in male Wistar rats. A total of 45 male rats were divided into nine groups (n = 5 per group). Group 1 served as the normal control; Group 2 received nicotine only (1 mg/kg) to

ETHNO-PHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Anthonotha macrophylla, a plant with extensive ethnomedicinal uses, has various parts attributed to healing properties. The bark is claimed to be used to treat venereal diseases while the roots are used to treat intestinal discomfort. Gum extract from the bark provides pain relief, while the leaves are used for treating gonorrhoea, diarrhoea, and malaria. Additionally, the leaves are believed to enhance sexual behaviour. Although the age-long folkloric use of Anthonotha macrophylla leaf as aphrodisiac in female rats was substantiated with scientific evidence, t

The traditional use of Mirabilis jalapa L. roots to enhance male sexual performance prompted us to assess the in silico, in vitro, and in vivo aphrodisiac activities of its hydroethanolic extract using normal male rats. Spectroscopic characterization indicated the presence of ß-D-glucopyranoside, methyl-1,9-benzyl-2,6-dichloro-9H-purine, and Bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate; these compounds have a significant inhibitory effect on the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) enzyme in silico evaluation and minerals (including zinc, cadmium, and magnesium). Other phytochemical analyses revealed the presence of p

The study uses in-vitro antioxidant, ex-vivo enzyme kinetics and in-silico approach using standard protocols to understand their inhibitory mechanism better. The study revealed that bacterial strain HOKA1 isolated from Oniru beach, grown in nutrient agar supplemented with sodium chloride (30%NaCl). Moreso, the bacterial strain HOKA1 extract showed better antioxidant capability and greatly reduced the penile and cardiac cGMP with the highest penile and cardiac concentration between 0.013 and 0.183 μM/Min as compared to the sildenafil citrate (0.00-0.203 μM/Min). Moreover, the kinetic parameters

The use and sale of sexual enhancement drugs (particularly unapproved aphrodisiacs) have become a public health concern in Ghana and many other sub-Saharan African countries. While most studies have examined this phenomenon from the level of individual perspectives, this study investigates the multi-dimensional and multi-level factors (e.g., individual characteristics and behaviours, interpersonal factors, community norms and practices, institutional and public policy factors) that influence attitudes, perceptions, and use of aphrodisiacs among men and women in Ghana. Using a concurrent mixed-

Drugs meant to help with erectile dysfunction are more often used for fun and to enhance sexual performance. However, the non-medical use of these medications may encourage risky sexual behavior and raise the chances of getting sexually transmitted infections, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In this study, we explore the association between the aphrodisiac use and the risky sexual behavior among men aged 15-49 years in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. This study is a secondary analysis of data from 654 men aged 15-49 years in Kinshasa, regardless of sexual orientation. The dat

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The prevalence and distress caused by erectile dysfunction (ED) to both male and female partners are increasing at a steady rate. ED has now become the most treated sexual disorder for men among young and old age groups due to varying physical and psychological factors. The treatment with synthetic Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors are cost-effective but due to adverse effects such as priapism, loss of vision, heart attack and syncope, the daily life patterns of these patients are distressed and hence the need for alternative medicaments or sources are of ut
