Apocrine adenocarcinoma arising in Moll gland cystadenoma.

CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old woman had a bluish tumor medially on the margin of the left upper eyelid. Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva was presumed; the lesion was excised and submitted for routine histopathologic examination. There are no signs of recurrence or metastatic disease after follow-up for 1 year. METHODS: Light microscopy with routine and histochemical stains were used for diagnosis. Immunohistochemical analysis included the use of a broad-spectrum "cocktail" of cytokeratin antibodies (AE1/AE3). RESULTS: The features were those of a cystic cavity lined with apocrine epitheli

Apocrine carcinoma in the parotid gland and in the submandibular region.

The objectives of this paper are to report a case of apocrine carcinoma and the discussion of aspects related to its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Carcinomas with apocrine differentiation not related to extramammary Paget's disease, ductal breast carcinoma, Moll's glands adenocarcinoma and ceruminous glands carcinoma are very uncommon tumors. We report a case of a 51-year-old black woman who developed apocrine carcinoma lesions in the head and neck region. Two lesions involved her left parotid gland (first tumor and local recurrence), and other involved her submandibular skin. The micro

Hidradenitis suppurativa: a disease of follicular epithelium, rather than apocrine glands.

A retrospective study was made of the histopathology of axillary skin excised from 12 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa. In the majority of cases (10 out of 12), squamous epithelium-lined structures, in the form of cysts or sinuses were identified in the dermis. Laminated keratin was present in all these structures and half of the cysts also contained hair shafts, suggesting that they are derived from hair follicles. Only a small proportion of cases (4 out of 12) displayed inflammation in apocrine glands, and in these the inflammation was also seen around eccrine glands, hair follicles an

Androgen metabolism by isolated human axillary apocrine glands in hidradenitis suppurativa.

Androgen metabolism was investigated in normal human apocrine glands and in those isolated from age-matched patients with hidradenitis suppurativa. Axillary glands were isolated by shearing and androgen interconverting enzyme activities were measured in cell-free homogenates by incubation with [3H] dehydroepiandrosterone, [3H] androstenedione and [3H] testosterone. The activities (pmol/mg protein/min: mean + SEM) of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase delta 4-5-isomerase (10.0 +/- 1.2 vs. 5.3 +/- 0.5: n = 5) and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (58.1 +/- 4.5 vs. 35.7 +/- 5.2: n = 5) were s

Using Neuromodulators for Salivary, Eccrine, and Apocrine Gland Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sialorrhea, hyperhidrosis, bromhidrosis, and chromhidrosis are common glandular disorders that substantially impact patients' health and quality of life. Botulinum toxin can safely and temporarily decrease gland secretions by targeting the parasympathetic cholinergic neurons, resulting in diminished saliva and sweat production. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to describe the applications of neuromodulators for the treatment of salivary, eccrine, and apocrine glands. METHODS: PubMed was searched from inception to February 1, 2024 using search terms "neurotoxin," "botul

Characterization of Black Pigmenturia in a Cat with Apocrine Gland Cystadenocarcinoma.

An 8-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was presented for further management of an apocrine gland cystadenocarcinoma. Extensive nodal metastasis was diagnosed and the cat was humanely destroyed 2 months after presentation. Post-mortem histopathology of the cystadenocarcinoma revealed areas of yellow-brown granular pigmentation on light microscopy, staining positively for reducing substances with Schmorl's stain and demonstrating autofluorescence on confocal microscopy. The cat's urine was black and also exhibited autofluorescence, and further analysis revealed increased free pento

Mixed apocrine sweat gland tumor of the tail in a cow.

A 4-year-old native-breed cow had a mass with wide areas of ulceration and hemorrhage at the base of the tail at the same level as the vulva. The tumor was 19 X 13 X 11 cm, appeared red-brown, and was firm to hard, with gritty areas apparent on cut surface. Histologically, the tumor mass was composed of multilayered epithelial cells forming glandular structures with occasional apical blebs and rare solidly packed cells in nests. The stroma included fibrous connective tissue, scattered or periglandular sheets of spindle-shaped cells resembling myoepithelium, several cartilaginous formations, an

Atypical apocrine proliferation involving anogenital mammary-like glands of the perianal region.

Anogenital mammary-like glands (MLGs) are a normal constituent of the anogenital area showing similarities to breast glands. MLGs are recognized to be the possible origin for various neoplastic and reactive conditions that show homology to their mammary counterparts. We report the case of an 85-year-old woman presenting with 10 cm polypoid mass of the perianal region. Histopathological examination of the excised lesion showed atypical apocrine proliferation arising in a complex lesion with features of fibroadenoma, adenosis and hyperplastic and cystic change. Normal MLGs were observed at the t

Hypercalcaemia associated with a retroperitoneal apocrine gland adenocarcinoma in a dog.

A seven-year-old, entire female golden retriever was presented with a history of polyuria/polydipsia and progressive dysuria. Clinical examination, radiography and ultrasonography demonstrated urinary retention due to a large soft tissue mass in the retroperitoneal space. Laboratory findings revealed paraneoplastic hypercalcaemia. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass suggested an epithelial tumour, resembling an apocrine gland carcinoma of the anal sac. Following euthanasia and necropsy, the histopathological diagnosis of the retroperitoneal mass was apocrine gland adenocarcinoma. Despi

Cytochemical characterization of glycoconjugates in the apocrine glands of the equine scrotal skin.

Cytochemistry of glycoconjugates in the apocrine glands in the scrotal skin of the horse was studied using cytochemical methods for electron microscopy, particularly lectin cytochemistry. The secretory cells possessed a variable number of secretory vesicles, a well-developed Golgi apparatus, and abundant cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Additionally, the basolateral plasma membrane formed numerous interdigitating folds. Glycoconjugates with vicinal diol groupings were present predominantly in the secretory vesicles, the Golgi apparatus, the surface coat of the plasma membrane, and

Pure Apocrine Intraductal Carcinoma of Salivary Glands: Reassessment of Molecular Underpinnings and Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) of the salivary glands is a confounding entity, our understanding of which continues to evolve. At least four forms have been elucidated based on histomorphology, immunophenotype, and molecular profile: (1) intercalated duct-like, S100/SOX10+ with frequent NCOA4::RET fusions; (2) oncocytic, S100/SOX10+ with TRIM33::RET, NCOA4::RET, and BRAF V600E; (3) apocrine, AR+ with PI3 kinase pathway mutations; and (4) mixed/hybrid intercalated duct-like/apocrine, with S100/SOX10+ and AR+ areas and frequent TRIM27::RET. The revelation that myoepithelial cells harbor

Apocrine glands are bystanders in hidradenitis suppurativa and their involvement is gender specific.

BACKGROUND: Apocrine glands have been long considered as the initial targeted skin compartment in hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa (HS). OBJECTIVE: Detection of apocrine gland involvement in HS. METHODS: Apocrine glands were isolated from skin biopsies of involved and uninvolved skin of HS patients (n = 16, females : males 1 : 1) by laser capture microscopy and studied by whole transcriptome profiling. Dysregulated genes were detected by comparing lesional and non-lesional skin obtained from female and male HS patients using the Agilent array platform. RESULTS: SULF1 was the only gene,

The pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa: a closer look at apocrine and apoeccrine glands.

We undertook a retrospective pathological study of 118 skin resection specimens from 101 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa. Follicular occlusion was identified in all the specimens, regardless of disease duration (1 month to 18 years), but was not noted in the axillary and inguinal skin of controls. We therefore regard follicular occlusion as an early and important feature in the pathogenesis of the disease. The presence of apoeccrine glands in axillary skin provided an in vivo model to directly observe the effects of follicular occlusion on follicle inflammation and apocrine gland destru

Apocrine adenomyoepithelioma--a rare but distinctive primary sweat gland neoplasm.

Adenomyoepithelioma is a rare, microscopically distinctive tumor of the skin. This article explores an example that presented in the inguinal area in a 29-year-old woman, mimicking adenopathy. Histopathologically, the tumor included two different areas: a cystic area consisting of tubules and glands in hyalinized stroma and a solid area showing marked myoepithelial proliferation. The diagnosis of adenomyoepithelioma was confirmed by the presence of a biphasic immunoprofile, with expression of cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen in the glandular epithelium and with expression of viment

Apocrine adenocarcinoma of possible sweat gland origin in a male rabbit.

A five-year-old, male crossbreed rabbit was referred for acute caudal abdominal swelling. On physical examination, the rabbit was slightly depressed and showed an enlarged subcutaneous cyst in the caudal abdomen and an adjacent small, ulcerated solid mass. A drainage tube was placed in the cystic area, and surgical resection of the solid mass was performed. The histopathological diagnosis of the mass was apocrine adenocarcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, this report describes the first case of spontaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma of possible sweat gland origin in a male rabbit.
