Ischemic heart disease, serum cholesterol, and apolipoproteins in CAPD.

Thirty-one patients, mean age 54 years, had been on chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for an average of 38 months. Mean values (mg/dl) for triglycerides (567), total-C (267), LDL-C (133), and Apo-B (154) were elevated, and HDL-C (30) were low. The low values for total-C/Apo-B and LDL-C/Apo-B suggest an increase in the number of low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, rather than in the amount of cholesterol per LDL particle. Without knowledge of lipids, ischemic heart disease for the 31 patients was categorized into five grades in the following manner. All patients were graded bas

Lipids and apolipoproteins in patients treated with major tranquilizers.

The concentrations of lipids and apolipoproteins in serum from men with chronic schizophrenia who were receiving major tranquilizers (17 receiving phenothiazines and 14 receiving a butyrophenone) were quantitated and compared with serum from male controls (n = 14). Concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoproteins A-I and A-II were significantly lower in the patients than in the controls. Mean apolipoproteins C-II and C-III and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the patients receiving phenothiazines were higher than levels in the patients receiving buty

Studies of lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins in Menkes' disease.

Three patients with Menkes' disease, an inherited disorder of copper transport, were studied to determine whether the copper deficiency was associated with a lipoprotein disorder. Hypocuprinemia was documented in all three cases. Two patients had severe copper and ceruloplasmin deficiencies, whereas the third patient had a less severe deficiency. Hypertriglyceridemia was observed in the first patient, and elevations in triglyceride, cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (ApoB), and apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III) occurred predominantly in the very low density lipoprotein fraction (VLDL). This patient

The functions of apolipoproteins and lipoproteins in health and disease.

Lipoproteins and apolipoproteins are crucial in lipid metabolism, functioning as essential mediators in the transport of cholesterol and triglycerides and being closely related to the pathogenesis of multiple systems, including cardiovascular. Lipoproteins a (Lp(a)), as a unique subclass of lipoproteins, is a low-density lipoprotein(LDL)-like particle with pro-atherosclerotic and pro-inflammatory properties, displaying high heritability. More and more strong evidence points to a possible link between high amounts of Lp(a) and cardiac conditions like atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCV

Lipids, apolipoproteins and gestational diabetes mellitus: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the causal relationship between lipid traits and GDM in an effort to better understand the aetiology of GDM. METHODS: Employing a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) framework, we used Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables to examine the impact of lipids and apolipoproteins on GDM. The research comprised univariable and multivariable MR analyses, with a prime focus on individual and combined effects of lipid-related traits. Statistical techniques included the fixed-effect inverse variance weighted (IVW) method and supplementar

Associations between birth weight and adult apolipoproteins: The LifeGene cohort.

BACKGROUND: Early life factors may predict cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the pathways are still unclear. There is emerging evidence of an association of early life factors with apolipoproteins, which are linked to CVD. The study objective was to assess the associations between birth variables and adult apolipoproteins (apoA1 and apoB, and their ratio) in a population-based cohort. METHODS: The LifeGene Study is a prospective cohort comprising index participants randomly sampled from the general population. Blood samples were collected between 2009 and 2016. In this sub-study, we used birt

Apolipoproteins A-I and B-markers in coronary risk evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if apoB, apoA-I and apoB/apoA-I ratios are independent risk factors for coronary heart disease and to determine their value in relationship with serum lipid fractions in evaluating the risk of coronary events. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a comparative observational study on 289 subjects divided into two groups: 144 subjects with old myocardial infarction, and 145 subjects without coronary heart disease, but with cardiovascular risk factors. None of the subjects received lipid-lowering drugs in the previous 3 months. RESULTS: The mean values of lipid fract

The effect of testosterone replacement on plasma lipids and apolipoproteins.

Ten men with Klinefelter's syndrome were studied to assess the effect of testosterone replacement on plasma lipids and apolipoproteins. Measurements taken before the insertion of a testosterone ester implant were compared with those obtained 1 week and 4 weeks later. Mean plasma testosterone, androstenedione, total cholesterol and calculated LDL-cholesterol increased significantly after 1 and 4 weeks. No significant changes were seen in total plasma concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol subfractions 2 and 3 or in apoplipoproteins A-I, A-II or B. A significant correlation was seen

Effects of bariatric surgery on apolipoprotein A1, apolipoprotein B, and apolipoprotein B/ apolipoprotein A1 ratio: Findings from a prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is associated with significant improvements in cardiometabolic health. The apolipoprotein B (ApoB)/apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) ratio has been demonstrated to be a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. However, the long-term impact of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on the ApoB/ApoA1 ratio remains unexplored. METHODS: Observational study including data from a prospective cohort of patients undergoing SG with ApoA1, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA1 ratio data at baseline, 1 year, and in the long term (3- to 10 years). RESULTS: A total of 376 participants with baseline and 1-

Associations between maternal mid-pregnancy apolipoprotein A-1, apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-1 ratio and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevated lipid levels during pregnancy have been shown to be related to the risk of preterm birth. Despite the importance of apolipoprotein (Apo) in lipid metabolism and transportation, evidence regarding apolipoprotein levels during pregnancy and preterm birth is still limited. Therefore, we aim to investigate the associations between maternal ApoA-1, ApoB, ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio and preterm birth. MATERIALS AND METH: Data were extracted from the information system of Guangdong Women and Children Hospital. Lipoprotein levels were tested using Beckman Coulter AU5800 in mid-pre

Apolipoprotein L1 and apolipoprotein A-IV and their association with kidney function.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common disease with an estimated prevalence of 10-12%. There are pronounced differences between ethnicities with a 3-fold to 4-fold higher lifetime risk for end-stage kidney disease in African Americans compared to European Americans. The purpose of this review was to discuss recent findings on two apolipoproteins (apolipoprotein L1 and A-IV) in the context of kidney disease and kidney function. RECENT FINDINGS: The observation that certain apolipoprotein L1 risk genotypes that are only present in African Americans might explain a major fra

Absolute Quantification of Plasma Apolipoproteins for Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction.

Apolipoproteins have important structural and functional roles in several lipoprotein particles. Apolipoproteins regulate lipid metabolism, adipose tissue, and energy production and serve major regulatory roles in both pre- and pro-atherosclerotic mechanisms. They are also involved in protective mechanisms against atherosclerotic plaques. Therefore, accurate quantification of apolipoproteins may serve as a crucial biomarker for cardiovascular diseases. However, most apolipoproteins cannot be detected using standard clinical immunoassays, and multiplexing is not available for some species of ap

Serum lipids, apolipoproteins, and mortality among coronary artery disease patients.

The proatherogenic effect of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and antiatherogenic effect of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) have been confirmed in general population. But controversy arises among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The goal of this study was to identify the association of different lipid measurements with CAD prognosis. The study cohort included 1916 CAD patients who were 40-85 years of age. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association of baseline 6 lipid factors and 3 ratios with all-cause and cardiovascular (CVD

Can apolipoproteins and complement factors be biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in elderly persons. Quick diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease will allow treatments that may help slow its progression. The correlation between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters and progression of Alzheimer's disease is higher than and independent of other risk factors. We have compared sixteen CSF samples of clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease patients with non demented subjects using proteomics approach. Apolipoprotein E, apolipoprotein J, complement C4b, hemopexin and complement factor B were identified as differentially expresse

Apolipoproteins in human fetal colon: immunolocalization, biogenesis, and hormonal regulation.

The present investigation aimed at defining the localization of apolipoproteins (apo) A-I, A-IV, B-48, and B-100 along the crypt-villus axis of the human fetal colon, their biogenesis during gestation, and their hormonal regulation. Using immunofluorescence, the distribution of apo A-I and A-IV appeared as a gradient, increasing from the developing crypt to the tip of the villus. On the other hand, apo B-100 staining was found in the crypt and the lower mid-villus region with varying intensities in the upper villus cells, while the 2D8 antibody which recognizes both apo B-100 and B-48, reveale

Conformational mimicry in Alzheimer's disease. Role of apolipoproteins in amyloidogenesis.

Several apolipoproteins are known to be closely associated with amyloid fibrillogenesis. Serum amyloid A, apolipoprotein (apo) AII and apo A1 are each deposited as biochemically distinct forms of amyloid. Late-onset Alzheimer's disease is linked to one isotype of apo E, apo E4. Apo E and apo E4 in particular have been shown to modulate amyloid fibril formation by amyloid-beta peptides in vitro. Furthermore, the carboxy terminus of apo E has been shown to be a constituent of plaque amyloid. We show immunohistochemically and electron microscopically the presence of apo A1 in senile plaques. Interplay between intra-pancreatic fat deposition, exchangeable apolipoproteins, and lipoprotein subclasses.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Exchangeable apolipoproteins, including apolipoprotein C-II (apo C-II), apolipoprotein C-III (apo C-III), and apolipoprotein E (apo E), play central roles in the modulation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk by readily transferring between anti-atherogenic high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and pro-atherogenic triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL). High intra-pancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) has also emerged as a novel risk factor for CVD. This study aimed to investigate the associations of apo C-II, apo C-III, and apo E with IPFD, as well as with TRL and HDL subclasses. MET

Apolipoproteins in circulation: At the interface of thrombosis and stroke initiation.

Ischemic stroke, a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, arises predominantly from atherosclerosis and thromboembolic occlusion of cerebral arteries. While advancements in acute interventions such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy have improved outcomes, the identification of upstream molecular drivers remains essential for better prevention and risk stratification. Among these, circulating apolipoproteins, the structural and regulatory proteins of lipoprotein particles, are increasingly recognized as pivotal mediators at the intersection of lipid metabolism, inflammation, endothelia
