Emergence and virulence of encephalitogenic arboviruses.

Each arbovirus that causes encephalitis is geographically restricted by the availability of appropriate vectors and reservoir hosts. These viruses evolve regionally by recombination, reassortment and point mutation and can "emerge" as causes of human encephalitis through extension to new geographic regions or by selection of more virulent or more efficiently transmitted virus variants. The properties of arboviruses that result in encephalitis involve efficient replication in peripheral tissues after initiation of infection, production of a viremia, entry into the central nervous system and eff

Arboviruses and the central nervous system.

Arboviruses cause encephalitis by infecting neurons of the host. Virus infection per se may cause death or dysfunction of neurons. The severity of the virus effect is dependent on the virulence of the virus and the maturity of the infected neuron. Neurons do not directly interact with T cells since they do not express MHC class I or class II antigens in vivo. Other cells such as microglia and perivascular macrophages probably present viral antigen to activated T cells coming to the brain from lymphoid organs. Infection elicits a local immune response that is characterized by mononuclear cell i

Geographical distribution of arboviruses in Yugoslavia.

Studies of arboviruses started in Yugoslavia in 1953 following the isolation of TBE virus which caused a severe epidemic that year. Until now the following viruses have been proven to circulate in the country: tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Bhanja (BHA), sandfly fever (SF), Tahyna (TAH), Calovo (CVO), West Nile (WN), dengue (DEN), Jug Bogdanovac (JB), and Hantaviruses. TBE virus is endemic in the north-west part of the country, causing also epidemics in cyclical intervals. Its typical clinical picture is aseptic meningitis, but severe cases with paralysi

[Transmission cycles of arboviruses in Madagascar].

Some arboviruses are highly pathogenic for Men or animals. Arboviruses epidemiological patterns in Madagascar were determined by entomological, serological, and virological surveys. We listed potentials arboviruses vectors in Madagascar. Entomological results generated by us during five years, as well as prior to, are shown. We caught more than 150,000 hematophagous arthropods, belonging to 107 species at least. 3 of these species were new. 4183 inoculation pools were done. We studied serollogically (by HI test) samples collected from 563 animals and 626 Men. Our data, in agreement with others

Antibodies to arboviruses in northwestern Spain.

A survey for antibodies to arboviruses was done in the human population of the north of Spain (provinces of La Coruña, Orense, Pontevedra, Leon, Asturias). Sera were obtained from 701 persons living in the area. The hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test showed that 16.5% of the population studied had antibodies to group B arboviruses. All sera were negative for group A and Phlebotomus fever group viruses, as well as for Tahyna and Calovo. No evidence of antibody to tick-borne encephalitis viruses was found. Neutralization tests done with several group B viruses on 56 selected sera with HI anti

Common arboviruses and the kidney: a review.

Arboviruses are endemic in several countries and represent a worrying public health problem. The most important of these diseases is dengue fever, whose numbers continue to rise and have reached millions of annual cases in Brazil since the last decade. Other arboviruses of public health concern are chikungunya and Zika, both of which have caused recent epidemics, and yellow fever, which has also caused epidemic outbreaks in our country. Like most infectious diseases, arboviruses have the potential to affect the kidneys through several mechanisms. These include the direct action of the viruses,

The challenges posed by equine arboviruses.

Equine populations worldwide are at increasing risk of infection by viruses transmitted by biting arthropods, including mosquitoes, biting midges (Culicoides), sandflies and ticks. These include the flaviviruses (Japanese encephalitis, West Nile and Murray Valley encephalitis), alphaviruses (eastern, western and Venezuelan encephalitis) and the orbiviruses (African horse sickness and equine encephalosis). This review provides an overview of the challenges faced in the surveillance, prevention and control of the major equine arboviruses, particularly in the context of these viruses emerging in

Classification, distribution and importance of arboviruses.

This essay reviews in concise form an extensive subject. Arborviruses belong to a number of different taxonomic groups, some of which include viruses not transmitted by arthropods. A state of the art definition of arboviruses is given which does recognise the importance of vertical transmission in arthropods to the basic maintenance of some arboviruses. Most of the arboviruses which affect humans are included in the families Togaviridae, Flaviviridae, Bunyaviridae, Reoviridae and Rhabdoviridae. Many arbovirus infections are symptomless. Clinical manifestations range from mild febrile illness,

Arboviruses in New York State: an attempt to determine the role of arboviruses in patients with viral encephalitis and meningitis.

In a reveiw of 2,963 patients with signs of infections of the central nervous system in New York State in 1966--1977, arboviruses were found to be the confirmed or presumptive etiologic agents in 60 patients. California encephalitis (CE) virus was the most common (44 patients), followed by Powassan (POW) virus (8), St. Louis encephalitis virus (7), and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus (1). Most patients (47) were children. The incidence of encephalitis was higher in patients with arbovirus findings than in infections with any other of the common neurotropic viruses. The disease was fata

Arboviruses: A global public health threat.

A conference on «ARBOVIRUSES, A GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH THREAT» was organized on June 20-22, 2018 at the Merieux Foundation Conference Center in Veyrier du Lac, France, to review and raise awareness to the global public health threat of epidemic arboviruses, and to advance the discussion on the control and prevention of arboviral diseases. The presentations by scientists and public health officials from Asia, the Americas, Europe and Africa strengthened the notion that arboviral diseases of both humans and domestic animals are progressively becoming dominant public health problems in the world. [Arboviruses also have an American dream].

Some arboviruses that originated in the Old World have been introduced by humans into the American continent. The first of them was the yellow fever virus, coming from the West African coast with slaves in the 17th-19th centuries, followed by dengue viruses, which were always prevalent within the Americas. Next was theWest Nile virus, introduced in New York in 1999, that spread in only a few years over the whole continent. Then, Chikungunya virus arrived on Saint Martin Island in 2013 after its outbreak in Polynesia; it is now widespread in the Caribbean Islands and on the American continent f

[South-East Asian arboviruses (author's transl)].

The South-East Asian arbovirological pathology is dominated by dengue fever, of which haemorrhagic forms constitute an important public health problem. The incidence of the disease is increasing from year to year, especially in large urban areas of this region and it is expected that the development of a vaccine in the near future will make it possible to improve the actual prevention only based on mosquito control, directed against domestic and peridomestic Aedes. Almost equally worrying is the epidemiological situation of Japanese encephalitis, which recently gave rise to important outbreaks

Arboviruses in North Dakota, 2003-2006.

To investigate arbovirus transmission in North Dakota, we collected and screened mosquitoes for viral infection by Vero cell culture assay. Seven viruses were isolated from 13 mosquito species. Spatial and temporal distributions of the important vectors of West Nile virus (WNV), Cache Valley virus, Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), and trivittatus virus are reported. Snowshoe hare virus, Potosi virus, and western equine encephalomyelitis virus were also isolated. The risks of Culex tarsalis and Aedes vexans transmitting WNV to humans were 61.4% and 34.0% in 2003-2006, respectively, but in 2003 whe
