Many people know of Health Level 7 (HL7) as an organization that creates health care messaging standards. Health Level 7 is also developing standards for the representation of clinical documents (such as discharge summaries and progress notes). These document standards make up the HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA). The HL7 CDA Framework, release 1.0, became an ANSI-approved HL7 standard in November 2000. This article presents the approach and objectives of the CDA, along with a technical overview of the standard. The CDA is a document markup standard that specifies the structure and sem

OBJECTIVE: To develop a risk predictor model in evaluation of tomosynthesis-detected architectural distortion (AD) based on characteristics of contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM).
METHODS: Ninety-four AD lesions on CEDM in combination with tomosynthesis were retrospectively reviewed from 92 consecutive women (mean age, 52.4 years ± 7.9) with abnormal diagnostic or screening mammography. CEDM results were correlated with histology of ADs using cross-tabulation for statistical analysis. Predictors for risk of malignancy from CEDM characteristics (background parenchyma enhancement, degr

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease driven by complex genetic, immunological, environmental, and neuro-immune interactions. Modern therapeutic strategies increasingly target distinct molecular mechanisms underlying specific asthma endotypes. Emerging evidence highlights the role of psychological stress in modulating the neuro-immune axis, contributing to allergic airway inflammation. Systems biology offers a powerful framework to understand the multi-cellular and cross-organ interactions between lung and brain microenvironments that drive asthma pathogenesis.

Lipids are fundamental components of the brain, crucial for synaptic transmission and signal propagation. Altered brain lipid composition is associated with common and rare neuropathologies, yet the spatial organization of the mammalian brain lipidome remains insufficiently characterized compared with other modalities1-6. Here we mapped the membrane-lipid architecture of the adult mouse brain at micrometric scale, across sexes and during pregnancy. This lipid brain atlas reveals that lipids describe a fine-grained biochemical structure that aligns with functional anatomy. Membrane-lipid spatia

Serotonergic psychedelics are being explored as treatments for a range of psychiatric conditions. Promising results in mood disorders indicate that their effects on emotional processing may play a central role in their therapeutic potential. However, mechanistic and clinical studies paint a complex picture of the impact of psychedelics on emotions and mood. Here, we review recent findings on the effects of psychedelics on emotion, emotional empathy, and mood. We discuss how psychedelics may impact long-term emotion management strategies, the significance of challenging experiences, and neuropl

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is the sole mediator of nucleocytoplasmic transport. Despite great advances in understanding its conserved core architecture, the peripheral regions can exhibit considerable variation within and between species. One such structure is the cage-like nuclear basket. Despite its crucial roles in mRNA surveillance and chromatin organization, an architectural understanding has remained elusive. Using in-cell cryo-electron tomography and subtomogram analysis, we explored the NPC's structural variations and the nuclear basket across fungi (yeast; S. cerevisiae), mammals

BACKGROUND: Whereas genetic variants influencing total amygdala volume have been identified, the genetic architecture of its distinct nuclei has yet to be explored. We aimed to investigate whether increased phenotypic specificity through nuclei segmentation aids genetic discoverability and elucidates the extent of shared genetic architecture and biological pathways with related disorders.
METHODS: T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging scans (N = 36,352, 52% female) from the UK Biobank were segmented into 9 amygdala nuclei with FreeSurfer (version 6.1). Genome-wide association analyses

Prepping is a practice of anticipating and adaptating to impending conditions of calamity, ranging from low-level crises to extinction-level events. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, which preppers consider a 'mid-level' event, and which many of them were well-prepared for, makes clear that scholarly attention to prepper's motivations and methods is both timely and valuable. Drawing from a three-year ethnographic research project with preppers, this paper traces the activity of a single bunker builder who has constructed a technically sophisticated private underground community. Supplemented by addi

Knowledge of uterine fibroids has existed since the time of Hippocrates. However, there are still wide gaps in the understanding of its pathogenesis. No single theory explains the background of uterine fibroid pathology, which affects more than 50% of women worldwide. By contrast, a newly depicted cell type called telocytes was only recently identified in the past twenty years. These cells have evoked ambivalent opinions in the scientific community. The unique features of telocytes coupled with experimental evidence by numerous researchers and our hypotheses and conceptions are discussed in th

Domestication has been essential to the progress of human civilization, and the process itself has fascinated biologists for hundreds of years. Domestication has led to a series of remarkable changes in a variety of plants and animals, in what is termed the "domestication phenotype." In domesticated animals, this general phenotype typically consists of similar changes in tameness, behavior, size/morphology, color, brain composition, and adrenal gland size. This domestication phenotype is seen in a range of different animals. However, the genetic basis of these associated changes is still puzzl

Hemidesmosomes are multiprotein complexes that facilitate the stable adhesion of basal epithelial cells to the underlying basement membrane. The mechanical stability of hemidesmosomes relies on multiple interactions of a few protein components that form a membrane-embedded tightly-ordered complex. The core of this complex is provided by integrin α6β4 and P1a, an isoform of the cytoskeletal linker protein plectin that is specifically associated with hemidesmosomes. Integrin α6β4 binds to the extracellular matrix protein laminin-332, whereas P1a forms a bridge to the cytoplasmic keratin intermed

The ATP-dependent integral membrane protease FtsH is universally conserved in bacteria. Orthologs exist in chloroplasts and mitochondria, where in humans the loss of a close FtsH-homolog causes a form of spastic paraplegia. FtsH plays a crucial role in quality control by degrading unneeded or damaged membrane proteins, but it also targets soluble signaling factors like sigma(32) and lambda-CII. We report here the crystal structure of a soluble FtsH construct that is functional in caseinolytic and ATPase assays. The molecular architecture of this hexameric molecule consists of two rings where t

The exact architecture of the normal nasopharyngeal tonsil remains obscure because most histopathologic investigations have been based on surgically removed adenoids. We compared enlarged adenoids and normal nasopharyngeal tonsils under both light and electron microscopes. The marked features of clinically enlarged adenoids were a large extension of the reticular epithelium and increased germinal centers. A tendency toward increased stratified squamous epithelium and decreased ciliated epithelium was apparent in enlarged adenoids, possibly due to inflammatory conditions. One type of nonciliate

This chapter reviews the evolution of DNA methylation programs during brain development, focusing on how DNA methylation patterns define cell identity and regulate gene expression. It traces early hypotheses about tissue-specific DNA methylation and highlights limitations of bulk tissue analysis. Advances in genome-wide mapping, cell sorting, and single-cell sequencing have clarified the roles of CG and non-CG methylation in neuronal and glial differentiation. The chapter details how enhancer and gene body methylation correlate with transcriptional activity and how transcription factors, like

Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are thin intercellular bridges that mediate the exchange of proteins, organelles, and nucleic acids between neighboring cells. They are enriched in tumor cells, implicated in chemotherapy resistance, induced in models of aggregation-based diseases, and their formation is stimulated by viruses that use TNTs to enhance infection. Despite their broad relevance and therapeutic potential, TNT morphology and function remain poorly understood, owing to the absence of clear morphological criteria and the limitations of light microscopy. Here, we establish two complementary s

Metabolic engineering often treats microbial metabolism as an inventory of metabolites, reactions, and the enzymes that catalyze them. This Perspective argues that function emerges from metabolic architecture, the connectivities that bind reactions into stable regimes shaped, among other factors, by space and time. The Japanese Metabolism movement motivates an architectural view in which the same metabolites could lead to rather different phenotypes when cells reconfigure metabolic routing subjected to environmental constraints. Natural examples, including the native cyclic glycolytic wiring o

Far from being passive barriers, viral membranes actively influence the mechanical properties and biological activity of viruses. Their lipid-protein composition forms a responsive interface that impacts how viruses assemble, remain stable, and interact with their surroundings. While the behavior of lipids and proteins in cellular membranes is well-described, their specific contributions within viral systems remain underexplored, largely due to nanoscale complexity and experimental limitations involved. Here, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of Zika virus were analyzed to characte

Influenza A viruses (IAV) are clinically important pathogens that cause seasonal epidemics and pandemics in humans. IAV produce pleomorphic, enveloped virions, which can range from a spherical or bacilliform morphology, the predominant form in the most commonly studied laboratory strains, to long filamentous virions which are characteristic of clinical and veterinary isolates. Understanding the structure and function of filamentous virions is crucial for clarifying their role in viral persistence and immune evasion, and for informing the development of therapeutics that target their entry and/
