From the radiologic pathology archives: precocious puberty: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Precocious puberty represents a unique diagnostic problem in which imaging plays an important role. Development of secondary sex characteristics may result from inappropriate activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis with release of gonadotropin, or from gonadotropin-independent secretion of sex steroids by the adrenal glands or gonads. A variety of lesions can manifest with precocious puberty, including various central nervous system (CNS) lesions, adrenal lesions, and sex cord-stromal tumors of the testis or ovary. CNS lesions causing precocious puberty are much more common in boys than

Lead Corrosion and Corrosivity Classification in Archives, Museums, and Churches.

Sixteen localities were involved in a broad study, resulting in the classification of the indoor corrosivity of metals considered in the ISO 11844 standard, especially lead. Recently, lead has been added to the standard as a metal specifically sensitive to volatile organic compounds such as acetic acid. Data on one-year exposure in museum depositories and exhibition spaces, archives, libraries, and churches show that the currently valid lead corrosivity categories are not correctly defined. The obtained data allowed for the proposal of new realistic ranges of indoor corrosivity categories for

From the radiologic pathology archives: intraventricular neoplasms: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

A variety of neoplasms may arise in the ventricular system. Intraventricular neoplasms may be discovered as an incidental finding at cross-sectional imaging or may manifest with varied symptoms depending on their location, including symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. These lesions may arise from various ventricular structures, including the ependymal lining (eg, ependymoma), subependymal layer (eg, subependymoma), or choroid plexus (eg, choroid plexus neoplasms), or they may have a cell of origin that has yet to be determined (eg, chordoid glioma). Other neoplasms involving the ventr

From the radiologic pathology archives: esophageal neoplasms: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Esophageal neoplasms have a wide spectrum of clinical features, pathologic findings, and imaging manifestations. Leiomyomas are the most common benign esophageal neoplasm, typically appearing as smoothly marginated intramural masses. Fibrovascular polyps arise in the cervical esophagus, gradually elongating as they are pulled inferiorly by esophageal peristalsis. Granular cell tumors are generally incidental small intramural masses with an appearance similar to that of leiomyomas. Malignant esophageal neoplasms are a common cause of cancer mortality, particularly squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

From the archives of the AFIP: lymphangioleiomyomatosis: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is an uncommon interstitial lung disease that exclusively affects women, usually during their reproductive years. LAM is characterized pathologically by abnormal proliferation of LAM cells in the lungs and in thoracic and retroperitoneal lymphatics. Thirty-three cases of LAM were reviewed retrospectively for clinical and radiologic findings. Twenty-eight (85%) of 33 women (aged 21-62 years; mean, 37.5 years) were symptomatic. Radiographs (n = 32) demonstrated reticular opacities in 21 (66%) patients, large lung volumes in 17 (53%), pleural effusion in 14 (44%), a

From the archives of the AFIP: benign musculoskeletal lipomatous lesions.

Benign lipomatous lesions involving soft tissue are common musculoskeletal masses that are classified into nine distinct diagnoses: lipoma, lipomatosis, lipomatosis of nerve, lipoblastoma or lipoblastomatosis, angiolipoma, myolipoma of soft tissue, chondroid lipoma, spindle cell lipoma and pleomorphic lipoma, and hibernoma. Soft-tissue lipoma accounts for almost 50% of all soft-tissue tumors. Radiologic evaluation is diagnostic in up to 71% of cases. These lesions are identical to subcutaneous fat on computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images and may contain thin septa. Lipom

A Living Archive of High-risk Lymphoma.

In this issue of Blood Cancer Discovery, Yang and colleagues present a comprehensive repository of patient-derived xenograft models of aggressive large B-cell lymphoma. The publicly available resource links disease specimens from individuals treated with diverse modern therapies (including chimeric antigen receptor T cells) to their high-risk clinical treatment histories and the molecular and transcriptional characteristics of their tumors, enabling the study of tumor cell-intrinsic mechanisms of therapeutic resistance and susceptibility to novel therapies. Rise and spread of lead-silver metallurgy deciphered from peatland archives.

How mining has shaped long-term economic and political landscapes across Europe and the Mediterranean remains poorly understood, largely because archaeological evidence is spatially fragmented and ore sources are difficult to trace from atmospheric lead (Pb) records. Here, we compile Pb isotope data from environmental archives and introduce the Environmental Match Intensity Index (EMII), a metric applied to peat records to track Pb-silver (Ag) ore-supply patterns and relative changes in the integrated mining-related atmospheric Pb signal over six millennia. EMII reveals an early mining signal

Investigating fish eye lenses as chemical archives of organic pollutant exposure.

To target pollution remediation efforts and predict pollutant impacts on fisheries and food security, new tools are needed to reconstruct lifetime exposure histories for endangered and commercially valuable fishes. However, current methods used to quantify chemical burden typically use soft tissues which lack temporal information and can miss pulse exposures. Fish eye lenses are proteinaceous structures that form metabolically inert layers (laminae) through life. Their isotopic chronologies are widely used to track lifetime habitat use and diet, but organic pollutants have not previously been

Validation and Optimization of Multi-Organ Segmentation on Clinical Imaging Archives.

Segmentation of abdominal computed tomography (CT) provides spatial context, morphological properties, and a framework for tissue-specific radiomics to guide quantitative Radiological assessment. A 2015 MICCAI challenge spurred substantial innovation in multi-organ abdominal CT segmentation with both traditional and deep learning methods. Recent innovations in deep methods have driven performance toward levels for which clinical translation is appealing. However, continued cross-validation on open datasets presents the risk of indirect knowledge contamination and could result in circular reaso

Mesenchymal Extratesticular Tumors and Tumorlike Conditions: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Both benign and malignant tumors and tumorlike conditions can arise from the nonepididymal extratesticular tissues. Benign tumors are far more common than malignant tumors, with lipoma being the most common lesion found at this site. Several imaging features can help narrow the differential diagnosis of these lesions, including the presence of fat and imaging features suggestive of fibrous tissue. Lesions that contain fat represent lipoma, liposarcoma, or angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF)-like tumor. If enhancing soft tissue is present in conjunction with fat, the differential diagnosis narrows furt

From the archives of the AFIP: musculoskeletal fibromatoses: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Musculoskeletal fibromatoses represent a wide spectrum of fibroblastic and myofibroblastic neoplasms with similar pathologic appearances and variable clinical behavior. These lesions can be categorized by location (superficial or deep) or by the age group predominantly affected. Superficial fibromatoses in adults (palmar and plantar) and children (calcifying aponeurotic fibroma, lipofibromatosis, and inclusion body fibromatosis) are often small slow-growing lesions; their diagnosis is suggested by location. Deep fibromatoses in adults (desmoid type and abdominal wall) and children (fibromatosi

From the archives of the AFIP: pilocytic astrocytoma: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common pediatric central nervous system glial neoplasm and the most common pediatric cerebellar tumor. This tumor has a noteworthy benign biologic behavior that translates into an extremely high survival rate-94% at 10 years-that is by far the best of any glial tumor. Most patients present in the first 2 decades, and clinical symptoms and signs are usually of several months duration and directly related to the specific location of the tumor. The cerebellum, optic nerve and chiasm, and hypothalamic region are the most common locations, but the tumor can also be

From the archives of the AFIP. Child abuse: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

In the United States, roughly one of every 100 children is subjected to some form of neglect or abuse; inflicted injury is responsible for approximately 1,200 deaths per year. Child physical abuse may manifest as virtually any injury pattern known to medicine. Some of the injuries observed in battered children are relatively unique to this population (especially when observed in infants) and therefore are highly suggestive of nonaccidental, or inflicted, injury. Worrisome injuries include rib fracture, metaphyseal fracture, interhemispheric extraaxial hemorrhage, shear-type brain injury, verte

From the archives of the AFIP: pulmonary vasculature: hypertension and infarction.

Pulmonary hypertension is the hemodynamic consequence of vascular changes within the precapillary (arterial) or postcapillary (venous) pulmonary circulation. These changes may be idiopathic, as in primary pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, but more commonly they represent a secondary response to alterations in pulmonary blood flow. The pulmonary and systemic bronchial circulations form broad anastomoses that largely prevent infarction except in settings of markedly elevated pulmonary venous pressure, underlying malignancy, or excessive embolic burden. Causes of precapi

From the archives of the AFIP. Extralobar sequestration: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Extralobar sequestration is a rare congenital anomaly that consists of pulmonary tissue anatomically separate from normal lung and usually deriving its blood supply from systemic vessels. The lesion typically manifests in the newborn period or early infancy with symptoms of respiratory distress. Less frequently, patients present in childhood or adulthood. Grossly and microscopically, the lesion resembles lung tissue. The typical radiologic finding is a homogeneous soft-tissue mass in the lower hemithorax. However, these lesions can also occur in the mediastinum, within the diaphragm, and, rare

Queer tattooing: archives of spatial belonging, bodily autonomy, resistance and community.

This article examines queer tattooing as both a historical and a contemporary practice of resistance, belonging and community formation. Bringing together three archives - oral history interviews and portraits of queer elders, historical medical records documenting tattooed queer women engaged in sex work at the turn of the twentieth century and a dialogue with queer tattoo artist Sara Swanson - we consider what queer tattooing reveals across generations, bodies and spaces. Our interdisciplinary approach combines archival research, oral history, artistic practice and activist perspectives to t

From the radiologic pathology archives: gastrointestinal lymphoma: radiologic and pathologic findings.

Gastrointestinal (GI) lymphoma encompasses a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that have a common lymphoid origin but variable pathologic and imaging features. Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (ENMZL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are the most common. ENMZL usually occurs in the stomach, where it is associated with chronic infection by Helicobacter pylori, and is typically a superficial spreading lesion that causes mucosal nodularity or ulceration and mild wall thickening. DLBCL may arise de novo or from transformation of ENMZL or other low-grade lymphomas. This form of lymp
