Journal of toxicology and environmental health. Part A2026eng
The use of medicinal plants is widespread, with approximately 20,000 species identified by the World Health Organization. In Brazil, the National Health Surveillance Agency officially recognizes 67 plant species for use in traditional therapies, such as infusions and decoctions. Among these, Aristolochia triangularis and Aristolochia brasiliensis are traditionally employed, mainly for the treatment of rheumatism, gout, and arthritis, due to their purported analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. However, the nephrotoxic potential of these species is not well documented in the sc

Aristolochia, a genus in the magnoliid order Piperales, has been famous for centuries for its highly specialized flowers and wide medicinal applications. Here, we present a new, high-quality genome sequence of Aristolochia fimbriata, a species that, similar to Amborella trichopoda, lacks further whole-genome duplications since the origin of extant angiosperms. As such, the A. fimbriata genome is an excellent reference for inferences of angiosperm genome evolution, enabling detection of two novel whole-genome duplications in Piperales and dating of previously reported whole-genome duplications

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Aristolochiae Fructus (AF) is a "notable" Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM), renowned for its efficacy in clearing lung heat, descending qi, relieving cough and asthma, as well as its well-documented toxicity. Traditionally used for conditions such as lung heat with cough and dyspnea, and hemorrhoidal swelling and pain, modern pharmacological research has uncovered additional potential clinical applications. However, in-depth studies have revealed that its constituent aristolochic acid I (AA-I) possesses potent nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity, which poses a

A new renal disease called 'Chinese-herb nephropathy' (CHN) has been reported to occur in women who have ingested slimming pills containing powdered extracts of the Chinese herb Stephania tetrandra (ST). Moderate to end-stage renal disease developed, requiring renal replacement therapy by dialysis or transplantation. Phytochemical analyses of the pills revealed the presence of aristolochic acids (AA) instead of tetrandrine, suggesting the substitution of ST (Han fang ji) by Aristolochia fangchi containing nephrotoxic and carcinogenic AA. A typical histological feature of CHN is a progressive i

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity induced by traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) containing aristolochic acids (AAs) and related compound preparations have greatly limited their clinical application. While the toxicity of AA-I and AA-II is relatively clear, there are marked differences in the toxic effects of different types of aristolochic acid analogues (AAAs). Thus, the toxicity of TCMs containing AAAs cannot be evaluated based on the toxicity of a single compound.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To systematically investigate the toxicity induced by Zhushalian (ZSL)

Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a disease found in Romania and neighboring countries in the Balkan area. In Romania, BEN is most prevalent in Mehedinti County, located in the South of Romania near the Danube River. The etiology of the disease is as yet unknown. One of the current hypotheses concerning BEN etiology is an involvement of aristolochic acid (AA). BEN bears many similarities to aristolochic nephropathy, which is developed due to the use of Chinese herbs as therapeutic remedies in slimming diets. This paper analyzes the involvement of therapeutic remedies based on AA in the BEN f

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral mimicry is a form of deceptive pollination in which flowers or inflorescences imitate specific resources relevant to potential flower visitors, such as food, brood sites, or mating partners (sexual mimicry). A plant genus containing many unstudied species with potentially highly diverse deceptive systems is fly-pollinated Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae), famous for its trap flowers. A few species with strongly male-biased pollinator assemblages have been suggested to mimic the female sex pheromones of flies. However, so far, neither the floral scents nor the female

Species of the genus Aristolochia are recognized as a rich source of structurally diverse specialized metabolites; however, the volatile chemical composition and biological properties of several Neotropical species remain poorly characterized. In particular, no information is currently available on the essential oil of Aristolochia lingulata Ule ex Pilg., which motivated this chemical, enantioselective, and preliminary biological investigation. The leaf essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID using nonpolar and polar stationary phases, while enantioselective GC-MS was employed to determ

Deceptive flowers, unlike in mutualistic pollination systems, mislead their pollinators by advertising rewards which ultimately are not provided. Although our understanding of deceptive pollination systems increased in recent years, the attractive signals and deceptive strategies in the majority of species remain unknown. This is also true for the genus Aristolochia, famous for its deceptive and fly-pollinated trap flowers. Representatives of this genus were generally assumed to be oviposition-site mimics, imitating vertebrate carrion or mushrooms. However, recent studies found a broader spect

Talaumidin, a tetrahydrofuran neolignan isolated from the root of Aristolochia arcuata, was shown to be an intriguing small molecule with neurotrophic activity in the primary culture of rat cortical neurons. Talaumidin can promote both dendrite-like and axon-like process outgrowth of cultured rat cortical neurons at the concentration range of 1-30 microm. Additionally, in the trophic withdrawal model, it can protect cell death caused by the deprivation of serum at the concentration range of 3-30 microm. These data suggest the potential of talaumidin to serve as a promising lead compound for tr

Insect development involves profound physiological reorganization that can alter the assimilation and allocation of metabolites across life stages. In herbivorous insects, these processes are tightly linked to diet-derived chemical exposure, yet how metabolic organization shifts throughout ontogeny remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated ontogenetic metabolomic variation in Battus polydamas feeding on Aristolochia gigantea, a system characterized by a specialized ecological interaction between insect and host plant. We examined how chemical profiles vary across larval, pupal, and adul

Aristolochia is a pantropical genus with important pharmacological properties. Despite making up 75 % of the global Aristolochia, the species from the Americas have received comparatively little research attention. Here, we exhaustively review the ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of Aristolochia species from the Americas, based upon 238 literature references and specimen vouchers of 28 Americas herbaria. The resulting database encompasses 919 records on 95 Aristolochia species with 129 documented traditional medicinal uses. South America and Mexico displayed the highest prevalence of tradi

Aristolochia plants are emblematic from an ethnopharmacological viewpoint and are know to possess numerous biological properties, including antiseptic. However, the medicinal potential of these species is debatable because of their representative chemical constituents, aristolochic acids (AAs) and aristolactams (ALs), which are associated, for instance, with nephropathy and cancer. These contrasting issues have stimulated the development of approaches intended to detoxification of aristoloquiaceous biomasses, among which is included the bioconversion method using larvae of the specialist phyto

Herbal remedies used in traditional medicine often contain several compounds combined in order to potentiate their own intrinsic properties. However, herbs can sometimes cause serious health troubles. In Belgium, patients who developed severe aristolochic acid nephropathy ingested slimming pills containing root extracts of an Aristolochia species, as well as the bark of Magnolia officinalis. The goal of the study was to evaluate, on a human renal cell line, Aristolochia and Magnolia extracts for their cytotoxicity by a resazurin cell viability assay, and their genotoxicity by immunodetection a

BACKGROUND: Aristolochia clematitis (AC), a herbaceous plant that belongs to the family of Aristolochiaceae, is today considered as being responsible for Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). Very scarce information is available in the medical literature about the presence of AC outside Balkan area. This article reports on the finding of AC in Northwest Italy and the results of a questionnaire delivered to locals on their knowledge about AC.
METHODS: AC was found in an uncultivated piece of land of a hilly area of Northwest Italy. It was identified by matching it with images available in the lite

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic potential of Aristolochia foetida Kunth. Stems and leaves of A. foetida Kunth (Aristolochiaceae) have never been investigated pharmacologically. Recent studies of species of the Aristolochiaceae family found significant cytotoxic activities. Hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were analyzed by 1H NMR and GC-MS to know the metabolites in each extract. In GC-MS analysis, the main compounds were methyl hexadecanoate (3); hexadecanoic acid (4); 2-butoxyethyl dodecanoate (9); ethyl hexadecanoate (20); methyl octadeca-9,12,

Aristolochia triangularis Cham., is one of the most frequently used medicinal plant in Southern Brazil. Preparations containing the leaves and/or stems are traditionally used as anti-inflammatory, diuretic, as well as antidote against snakebites. This study screened A. triangularis extracts, fractions and isolated compounds for different bioactivities. A weak antiproliferative activity against human lung cancer cell line (A549) was observed only for chloroform fraction obtained from stems (CFstems - CC50: 2.93 µg/mL). Also, a moderate antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was de
