Brucella as the main cause of abortion among livestock in Armenia.

INTRODUCTION: Abortion in livestock can have a significant impact on animal husbandry, as well as raise public health concerns when caused by zoonotic pathogens. Thus, the involvement of bacterial (e.g., Brucella spp. and Enterobacteriaceae) and fungal infections in livestock abortions in Armenia was explored. METHODOLOGY: From 2018 to 2022, 168 aborted foetal tissues from cattle and small ruminants in Armenia were tested for fungal and Enterobacteriaceae infections by culture. The API 20E biochemical test was performed on bacteria-positive samples. Culture-negative samples were further teste

Fasciola spp. in Armenia: Genetic diversity in a global context.

Fasciolosis, a food- and waterborne infection caused by the trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is recognized by WHO as a neglected zoonotic disease. Whereas F. hepatica is distributed worldwide in cooler climates, F. gigantica occurs mainly in the tropics of Africa and Asia. The southern Caucasus, with Armenia, is one of the most northern regions where both species occur and may produce hybrids. In this study, livestock in central Armenia was surveyed for fasciolosis, the causative species were determined and the genetic diversity of both species was estimated. Total prevalence in

[Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of tuberculosis in children and adolescents in Armenia].

In Armenia, the incidence of tuberculosis among children aged less than 18 years increased by 53.2% (from 7.9 to 12.1% per 100,000 inhabitants) in 1993 to 2003. On the contrary, the proportion of children and adolescents among all the patients decreased by almost twice (from 13.4 to 8.1%), which is largely due to the reduction in birth rates and to the inadequate detection of minor and local forms of primary tuberculosis. The clinical composition of tuberculosis in 1270 examined patients was the following: tuberculosis of respiratory organs (82.9%); its extrapulmonary forms (14.4%); tuberculou

Epidemic investigation of diphtheria in the Republic of Armenia, 1990-1996.

While incidence rates of diphtheria steadily declined in Armenia after World War II, reemergence of the disease in 1990 brought about changes in public health practices and identified resource needs. The Armenian Ministry of Health (MOH) routinely collected diphtheria case reports, as a reportable health outcome. Diphtheria incidence rates increased from 0.02/100,000 in 1993 to 1/100,000 (36 cases) in 1994. The distribution of cases showed that the greatest number of illnesses and deaths occurred among persons 5-14 years old, yet incidence rates among persons 1-4 and 5-14 years old were simila

A review on toxoplasma gondii research in Armenia: Gaps and opportunities.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite that can infect humans and animals, through various transmission routes, causing toxoplasmosis. The infection can pose severe complications in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women, as well as may lead to ocular and neurological disorders in some cases. The global prevalence of T. gondii infection varies depending on geographical, environmental, and socio-cultural factors. In Armenia, our understanding of T. gondii infection epidemiology remains limited, with scarce data on the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. gondii infecti

Molecular Epidemiology and Virulence of Non-Typhoidal Salmonella in Armenia.

In this work, we analysed human isolates of nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (NTS), which were collected from salmonellosis cases in Armenia from 1996 to 2019. This disease became a leading food-borne bacterial infection in the region, with the younger age groups especially affected. The isolates were characterised by serotyping, Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC-PCR) typing, and whole genome sequencing (WGS). The main serotypes were S. Typhimurium, S. Enteritidis, and S. Arizonae. ERIC-PCR indicated a high degree of clonality among S. Typhimurium strains, w

Incidence patterns and review of Hodgkin lymphoma in the Republic of Armenia.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) accounts for roughly 10% of all lymphomas and 0.6% of all malignant tumours analysed worldwide yearly. Data regarding HL in developing world are exceptionally constrained. The main objective of this research is to investigate the incidence patterns of HL within the Republic of Armenia and to portray disease distribution according to age and sex. There is a very strict evidence on the frequency of HL in Armenia. The results of our research find out that the frequency of HL in Armenia has not changed altogether over the past 15 years and is comparable to that detailed from

Gap analysis of breast cancer care at tertiary facilities in Armenia.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women globally. Armenia has one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the world, with an age standardized mortality-to-incidence ratio of 0.41, indicating that two in five breast cancer patients die from the disease. The factors contributing to this disproportionate mortality burden are poorly understood. The present study utilized a validated survey across four high-capacity cancer facilities to produce a national gap analysis of breast cancer care in Armenia. We find that the tertiary facilities surveyed broadly possess t

Seroprevalence of Hepatitis C Virus and Factors Associated with It in Armenia, 2021.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is among the leading causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Knowledge of its prevalence and risk factors can help to effectively fight the virus. This study was the first to investigate the seroprevalence of HCV, its genotypes, and factors associated with it among the general adult population of Armenia selected countrywide via cluster sampling. Anti-HCV antibodies were detected using third-generation immunoassay. Polymerase chain reaction and genotyping was performed among anti-HCV-positive individuals. Shortly after testing, the participants under
