An experiment was performed to investigate predictions of vigilance performance among depressive patients, based on the assumptions that vigilance would vary in a predictable manner with level of arousal, and that levels of arousal among diagnostic categories of depressive patients are well known. It was found that psychotic depressives, presumed to be hypo-aroused relative to normals, exhibited poor signal detection performances and committed few false positive errors relative to normals. We have repeated a study of the objective (labium minus temperature) and subjective (semantic scales) changes in sexual arousability over the menstrual cycle to erotic video stimulation in 20 women with natural cycles. The purpose of this retrospective analysis was to search for possible associations between snoring and arousals. A summation model of classical conditioning was used to describe the deviant sexual arousal pattern of a male psychiatric patient. Penile assessment showed a response to a compound stimulus (radio static plus a picture of a woman) that was approximately equal to the sum of the responses to each component alone. The subject's self-report of sexual arousal followed a similar pattern. A distinction was made between total and partial fetishism. It was suggested that what may be particularly troublesome in partial fetishism is the potential for high levels of summated arousal.

We developed and validated PANDA, a deep-learning model for pediatric arousal detection in polysomnography. PANDA uses a U-Net-style encoder-decoder architecture trained on 10-channel PSG signals with 17.5 min contextual windows and 2 Hz arousal outputs. Failure to arouse in response to hypoxia has been described in infants at increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and has been suggested as a possible mechanism for SIDS.
