Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) involves primarily the right ventricle, and should be considered in young patients presenting with syncope, ventricular tachycardia, cardiac arrest or in adults patients with congestive heart failure. Atrial electrical abnormalities due to ARVD have been rarely described. We report a case of ARVD in a 60-year-old man who developed sick sinus syndrome during evolution (sinus node recovery time of 6113 mseg). Atrial arrhythmias may be explained by gradual replacement of right atrium myocytes by adipose tissue.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is a myocardial disorder of primarily the right ventricle, with unknown cause and prevalence and with a frequent familial occurrence. The typical clinical manifestation consists of ventricular arrhythmias with a left bundle branch block (LBBB) pattern that occur predominantly in young adults. ARVD may result in sudden death. Other manifestations are electrocardiographic repolarization and depolarization changes, structural abnormalities that range from subtle wall aneurysms within the so-called "triangle of dysplasia" to biventricular regional

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia has been identified in 1977. It affects the right ventricle and its etiology is unknown. It has been recently included in the group of cardiomyopathies since it affects mainly the right ventricular muscle. It is found in young adults, frequently sportsmen who have a nearly normal cardiac physical examination. Ventricular arrhythmias could lead to palpitations, syncopes or even sudden death. This accident could be the first presenting sign of the disease. Two physiopathogenic mechanisms have been considered: heredo-familial origin or the result of a bu

A forty-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of dizziness, palpitations and an oppressive feeling in the precordium. Physical examination was normal. A chest roentgenogram revealed mild cardiomegaly and the electrocardiogram showed ventricular tachycardia of a left bundle branch block configuration which was terminated by the intravenous injection of procainamide. During sinus rhythm the electrocardiogram showed incomplete right bundle branch block, PQ prolongation and inverted T waves in leads V1 through V3. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed only moderate right ventricula

A 42-year-old male had history of recurrent palpitation and was documented to have wide QRS tachycardia. Magnetic resonance imaging angiogram showed evidence of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia and severe right ventricular dysfunction. Electrophysiology study showed evidence of bundle branch reentry ventricular tachycardia. It was successfully treated by radiofrequency ablation of right bundle branch. This is probably the first case of bundle branch reentry as a mechanism for ventricular tachycardia in a case of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, also called right ventricular cardiomyopathy, is a genetically determined heart muscle disease, characterised by life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in apparently healthy young people. The primary myocardial pathology is that the myocardium of the right ventricular free wall is replaced by fibrous or fibrofatty tissue, with scattered residual myocardial cells. Right ventricular function is abnormal and in severe cases is associated with global right ventricular dilation and overt biventricular heart failure. Although still relatively rare, arrhy

Comparison of two-dimensional echocardiography and right ventricular angiographic findings was carried out in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. Diagnosis was based on ECG and angiographic criteria in all cases. Echo and angiographic findings corresponded closely when diffuse enlargement and hypokinesis of the right ventricle were present. Echo evidence of localized disease, manifest by bulges or sacculations of the right ventricle, predicted the presence of similar lesions by angiography, but agreement as to specific lesion location was poor. In a review of over 9000 co

BACKGROUND: Prior reports describing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging abnormalities in arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD/C) were limited by nonuniform inclusion criteria. The aim of our study was to define the prevalence, sensitivity, and specificity of quantitative MR imaging findings in the probands of multidisciplinary study of right ventricular dysplasia.
METHODS: Individuals with ventricular arrhythmias of left bundle-branch block morphology meeting the Task Force criteria for ARVD/C underwent MR imaging. The MR images were compared with 10 patients with idiopathic ventricu

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia or cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) is a pathologic condition where the right ventricle is partially or totally replaced by fatty and fibrous tissue. The electrocardiogram (ECG) has a central role for diagnosis since it comprises two major and two minor criteria in the diagnostic criteria published by the Task 1 Force, although it is not 100% necessary to make a final diagnosis, because around 10% of patients with ARVD/C present with a normal ECG. In this article, we review the 12-lead electrocardiographic findings of patients with ARVD/C. ECG criteria observe

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D) is a predominantly genetically determined and heritable form of cardiomyopathy that is characterized pathologically by the replacement of myocytes by adipose and fibrous tissue and leads to right ventricular failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. The estimated prevalence of ARVC/D in the general population ranges from 1 in 2,000 to 1 in 5,000, men are more frequently affected than women, with an approximate ratio of 3:1. ARVC/D can be inherited as an autosomal dominant disease with reduced penetrance and variable expre

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy is a disorder characterized by frequent ventricular tachycardia originating from the right ventricle and fibro-fatty replacement of right ventricular myocardium. Though the disorder was originally described during surgical ablation of refractory ventricular tachycardia, catheter ablation of tachycardia is one of the options for patients not responding to anti arrhythmic agents. Direct current fulguration was used in the initial phase followed by radiofrequency catheter ablation. In the present day scenario, all patients with risk for su

The arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy is an important cause of sudden arrhythmic death, often exertional, in young individuals and athletes. Although the aetiology remains partially unknown, genetic abnormalities have been demonstrated. Reported prevalence is 1 in 5000 individuals but it is considered there are many non-diagnosed cases. The characteristic pathologic finding is the progressive fibro-fatty replacement of the right ventricular myocardium. The clinical manifestations vary from asymptomatic patients with an episode of sudden cardiac death as first symptom to

UNLABELLED: Right ventricular arrhythmogenic dysplasia (RVAD) is a state with high risk of sudden death in young patients. Early diagnosis of RVAD can facilitate sudden death prevention.
AIM: To assess prevalence of electrocardiographical signs of RVAD among children with "idiopathic" tachyarrhythmias.
MATERIAL: Patients without organic heart disease or overt noncardiac causes of arrhythmia aged 4-17 years (n=134, mean age 12+/-4.5 years, 56 girls and 76 boys) including 82 patients with >5000 extrasystoles VE 24 hours and 52 patients with ventricular tachycardia (VT). All patients had QTc in

The aetiology of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia is still unknown, and there are few reports on familial coincidence in the literature. A case of a previously healthy man with an episode of acute myocarditis is described. After recovery from acute myocarditis, the patient was resuscitated from aborted sudden cardiac death 16 months later. Angiographic and electrophysiological evaluation suggested the pattern of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. The case seems to suggest that arrhythmogenic right and/or left ventricular dysplasia could be mimicked by chronic (or healed) myo

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) is predominantly an inherited cardiomyopathy with typical histopathological characteristics of fibro-fatty infiltration mainly involving the right ventricular (RV) inflow tract, RV outflow tract, and RV apex in the majority of patients. The above pathologic evolution frequently brings patients with ARVD/C to medical attention owing to the manifestation of syncope, sudden cardiac death (SCD), ventricular arrhythmogenesis, or heart failure. To prevent future or recurrent SCD, an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) is highly d

BACKGROUND: Desmosomal changes, electric uncoupling, and surviving myocardial bundles in fibrofatty tissue characterize arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C). Resultant activation delay is pivotal for reentry and thereby ventricular tachycardia (VT). Current task force criteria (TFC) for diagnosis have limited sensitivity. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of additional criteria on activation delay and VT to improve identification of affected individuals.
METHODS AND RESULTS: ECG criteria were studied, while off drugs, in 50 index patients w

OBJECTIVE: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is a myocardial disease of familiar, origin where the myocardium is replaced by fibrofatty tissue predominantly in the right ventricle. Herein we have presented the clinical courses of 4 patients with ARVD who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 358 adult patients undergoing heart transplantation, 4 (1.1%) displayed ARVD. The main indication for transplantation was the progression to heart failure associated with arrhythmias. All 4 patients displayed rapid, severe courses leading to heart failure
