Antimicrobial and efflux pump inhibitory activity of caffeoylquinic acids from Artemisia absinthium against gram-positive pathogenic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Traditional antibiotics are increasingly suffering from the emergence of multidrug resistance amongst pathogenic bacteria leading to a range of novel approaches to control microbial infections being investigated as potential alternative treatments. One plausible antimicrobial alternative could be the combination of conventional antimicrobial agents/antibiotics with small molecules which block multidrug efflux systems known as efflux pump inhibitors. Bioassay-driven purification and structural determination of compounds from plant sources have yielded a number of pump inhibitors whi

Therapeutic efficacy of Artemisia absinthium against Hymenolepis nana: in vitro and in vivo studies in comparison with the anthelmintic praziquantel.

Hymenolepis nana is a common intestinal tapeworm that affects humans. Drugs are available for the treatment of this infection, including praziquantel (PZQ), nitazoxanide and niclosamide. Although the drug of choice is praziquantel, due to its high cure rates, indicators of the development of PZQ resistance by different parasites have begun to appear over recent decades. Therefore, this study was a trial to find an alternative to PZQ by assessing the activity of the crude aqueous extract of the medicinal herb Artemisia absinthium against H. nana. In vitro, the extract was used against adult wor

Differential effects of biologically and chemically synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles on artemisinin biosynthesis gene expression in Artemisia absinthium.

Artemisinin is an effective antimalarial compound produced by Artemisia absinthium. Due to its low natural yields, it is crucial to investigate novel strategies to enhance biosynthesis of artemisinin. The impact of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on the expression of important genes involved in the biosynthesis of artemisinin was examined in this work. CuO NPs were synthesized using both green microwave irradiation and conventional wet chemical methods. Application of a variety of techniques, including XRD, DLS, FESEM, EDX, and FTIR confirmed the proper synthesis of CuO NPs. Nodal segment
