Artemisia annua L. belongs to the Asteraceae family, which is indigenous to China. It has valuable pharmacological properties, such as antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. However, whether it possesses antiasthma properties is unknown. In the current study, chloroform extract of Artemisia annua L. (CEAA) was prepared, and we found that CEAA completely eliminated acetylcholine (ACh) or high K+-elicited (80 mM) contractions of mouse tracheal rings (TRs). Patch-clamp technique and ion channel blockers were employed to explore the underlying mechanisms of the relaxant effect

Artemisinin from the plant Artemisia annua (A. annua) L, and used as artemisinin combination therapy (ACT), is the current best therapeutic for treating malaria, a disease that hits children and adults especially in developing countries. Traditionally, A. annua was used by the Chinese as a tea to treat "fever". More recently, investigators have shown that tea infusions and oral consumption of the dried leaves of the plant have prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy. The presence of a complex matrix of chemicals within the leaves seems to enhance both the bioavailability and efficacy of artemisi

Stress burdens the activities of individuals and negatively impacts their overall well-being, highlighting the urgent need to explore effective remedies. Since the discovery of the first antimalarial drug from Artemisia annua, this plant has been recognized for its remarkable pharmacological activities, such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-obesity, and antidiabetic, among others. Herein, we investigated the phytochemical profiling and anti-stress potential of A. annua using a mouse model. First, the crude extracts of A. annua (ArAn-Crd) were subjected to HPLC and GC-MS analyses, which revea

Glandular trichome (GT) is the dominant site for artemisinin production in Artemisia annua. Several critical genes involved in artemisinin biosynthesis are specifically expressed in GT. However, the molecular mechanism of differential gene expression between GT and other tissue types remains elusive. Chromatin accessibility, defined as the degree to which nuclear molecules are able to interact with chromatin DNA, reflects gene expression capacity to a certain extent. Here, we investigated and compared the landscape of chromatin accessibility in Artemisia annua leaf and GT using the Assay for T

The treatment of acanthamoebiasis is a great problem. Most cerebral invasions end with death, and the treatment of ocular invasions is usually long-lasting and not very effective. Numerous plant extracts and substances isolated from plants, which are effective against trophozoites or cysts, have been studied in the treatment of acanthamoebiasis. However, no agents that are simultaneously effective against both developing forms of amoebae have been discovered yet. It seems that such a plant which fulfils both tasks is Artemisia annua L. Our studies showed that water, alcohol and chloroform extr

Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by the protozoan Plasmodium parasites. Each year, it causes disease in approximately 515 million people and kills between one and three million people, the majority of whom are young children in sub-Saharan Africa. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Due to climate change and the gradual warming of the temperate regions the future distribution of the malaria disease might include regions which are today seen as safe. Currently, malaria control requires an integrated approach

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the second-most dreaded parasitic disease after malaria, is currently endemic in 88 countries. Dramatic increases in the rates of infection, drug resistance, and non-availability of safe vaccines have highlighted the need for identification of novel and inexpensive anti-leishmanial agents from natural sources. In this study, we showed the leishmanicidal effect of essential oil from Artemisia annua leaves (AALEO) against Leishmania donovani in vitro and in vivo. AALEO was extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized by GC-MS, the most abundant compounds were fou

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in China in December 2019, the pandemic has spread to almost every country in the world, resulting in more than half a billion sick patients and more than seven million victims. The objective of our present study is to explore some plant resources available in Algeria and to verify their potential use against SARS-CoV-2, involved in COVID-19. The study used plant species belonging to the genus Artemisia and growing naturally in Algeria: Artemisia herba-alba and Artemisia absinthium. The essential oils of these two species, analysed by GC-MS, gave a fairly rich ch

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania spp., transmitted by sandflies, and endemic in 98 countries. Leishmania infantum, the main agent of visceral leishmaniasis in Europe, commonly infects both humans and animals, with dogs as the principal domestic reservoir. Clinical manifestations in dogs depend on the host immune response. A robust Th1 response facilitates macrophage activation and parasite control, while persistently elevated TNF-α and IL-6 can lead to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. Current treatments reduce parasite load but rarely achieve complete cure and a

Plants and plant-derived natural products have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The lack of effective therapies in the modern world to address several diseases, the increasing development of drug resistance, and the growing interest in herbal medicine have led to the study and resurgence of natural ancient remedies. A. annua, commonly known as sweet wormwood or sweet annie, is a medicinal plant widely known for its antimalarial properties. In the past decade, increasing evidence has demonstrated the plant's broad therapeutic potential, including antitumoral, antimicrobial, anti

Artemisinin, which has been isolated from Artemisiaannua L., is the most effective antimalarial drug and has saved millions of lives. In addition, artemisinin and its derivatives have anti-tumor, anti-parasitic, anti-fibrosis, and anti-arrhythmic properties, which enhances the demand for these compounds. Improving the content of artemisinin in A.annua is therefore becoming an increasing research interest, as the chemical synthesis of this metabolite is not viable. Ultraviolet B and C irradiation have been reported to improve the artemisinin content in A.annua, but they are harmful to plant gro

The adverse effect of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in fish farms is well known. However, dietary supplementation of Artemisia annua (A. annua) may decrease the negative effect of chlorpyrifos because of the ameliorating effect of A. annua. The aim of this study was to see how A. annua ameliorated the toxic effects of CPF on fish growth, health, growth-related gene expression, and gills, liver, and intestinal histology for 30 days. 120 Nile tilapia fish were divided into four groups according to A. annua with/without CPF. The Cont group was fed a formulated basal diet without CPF water contamination. The

Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene lactone produced in Artemisia annua, is the most effective antimalarial compound, but its low natural abundance in A. annua remains a major bottleneck for large-scale production. Increasing its biosynthesis requires a better understanding of the regulatory networks controlling artemisinin biosynthesis genes. Several jasmonate (JA)-responsive transcription factors have been characterized, but the role of upstream kinases remains poorly understood. Here, we identify AaSnRK2.6, a SnRK2III-type protein kinase, as a novel positive regulator of artemisinin biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: A. annua (also named Artemisia annua, sweet wormwood) is the main source of the anti-malarial drug artemisinin, which is synthesised and stored in its trichomes. Members of the basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) family of transcription factors (TFs) have been implicated in artemisinin biosynthesis in A. annua and in trichome development in other plant species.
RESULTS: Here, we have systematically identified and characterised 226 putative bHLH TFs in A. annua. All of the proteins contain a HLH domain, 213 of which also contain the basic motif that mediates DNA binding of HLH dimers. Of

Fungal endophytes are a major source of anti-infective agents and other medically relevant compounds. However, their classical blinded-chemical investigation is a challenging process due to their highly complex chemical makeup. Thus, utilizing cheminformatics tools such as metabolomics and computer-aided modelling is of great help deal with such complexity and select the most probable bioactive candidates. In the present study, we have explored the fungal endophytes associated with the well-known antimalarial medicinal plant Artemisia annua for their production of further antimalarial agents.

BACKGROUND: Artemisia annua L. has gained increasing attention for its anticancer activity. However, beside artemisinin, less is known about the possible bioactive ingredients of Artemisia annua and respective herbal preparations. We hypothesized that, in addition to artemisinin, Artemisia annua preparations might contain multiple ingredients with potential anticancer activity.
METHODS: MDA-MB-231 triple negative human breast cancer (TNBC) cells along with other treatment resistant, metastatic cancer cell lines were used to investigate in vitro and in vivo the anticancer efficacy of an Artemi
