Directed and meaningful animal behavior depends on the ability to sense key features in the environment. Among the different environmental signals, olfactory cues are critically important for foraging, navigation and social communication in many species, including ants. Ants use their two antennae to explore the olfactory world, but how they do so remains largely unknown. In this study, we used high-resolution videography to characterize the antennae dynamics of carpenter ants (Camponotus pennsylvanicus). Antennae are highly active during both odor tracking and exploratory behavior. When track

Many organisms engage in symbiosis with microbial partners that are not passed on directly to offspring but are acquired from the environment each generation. Hosts can minimize the risk of relying on such horizontal transmission of beneficial symbionts by engaging in specialized acquisition behaviours. Squash bugs, Anasa tristis, locate their Caballeronia symbiont through olfactory cues released from adult frass. After ingesting the symbiont, the nymph's behaviour shifts from symbiont searching to host-plant feeding. To begin elucidating the underlying changes behind this behavioural switch,

The evolutionary arms race between insectivorous bats and their insect prey is a classic paradigm of acoustic predation and evasion, with insects having evolved sophisticated auditory countermeasures. Both bats and insects also rely heavily on olfaction for key behaviors, such as social communication. Moreover, predator-derived odors are well established as risk cues in many other predator-prey systems. However, whether olfaction plays a role in the bat-insect arms race remains unknown. Here, we unveil a previously unknown olfactory dimension to this interaction. We demonstrated that the body

Anaesthesia methods play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the animal during experimental studies. This study investigates the impact of two anaesthesia methods, CO₂ and cold treatment, on an insect antennal response to synthetic alarm pheromone compounds. Adult worker hornets were anesthetised, and their antennae excised and tested using an electroantennography set-up with controlled stimulation of alarm pheromone components. Results showed that CO₂-anesthetised hornets exhibited robust antennal responses, while cold-anesthetised individuals displayed none. This result suggests that

The orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a significant wheat pest in the Prairie Provinces of Canada and northern regions of the USA. Wheat phenology plays a critical role in wheat midge oviposition. We hypothesized that S. mosellana oviposition behaviour is influenced by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by wheat at two adjacent wheat growth stages: preanthesis and postanthesis. A higher number of S. mosellana eggs laid on preanthesis than postanthesis spikes in an oviposition choice experiment using the susceptible spring wheat culti

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the behavioral responses and toxicity of three basic amines: 1-methylpiperazine, 1-methylpyrrolidine, and triethylamine (TEA), compounds suggested previously to be anosmic in vapor exposures to caged mosquitoes.
RESULTS: These compounds showed repellency of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, followed by flightlessness, knockdown, and paralysis, all increasing with exposure time and dosage. Electrophysiological experiments showed a blocking effect on nerve discharge of the Drosophila melanogaster larval central nervous system (CNS) with little evidence of hyperexcita

The legs of insects play an important role in their daily behaviour, especially reproduction. Entomologists have performed much research on the role of the leg in different behaviours of beetles, an important group in the insect family, but relatively little has been done to study the ultrastructure and transcriptome of their legs. Hence, we systematically studied the ultrastructure and gene expression of the leg of G. cantor, a polygynous beetle, and compared its male and female diversity. In this study, we found the fore-leg, mid-leg and hind-leg of the female were significantly longer than

Psacothea hilaris is an important wood boring beetle that causes significant ecological and economic damage. The mouthparts of P. hilaris contain feeding and sensory structures that play important roles in many behaviors. The study of their functional morphologies provides insight into feeding and sensory mechanisms. The fine structures of the mouthparts and the sensilla of both sexes were observed by scanning electron microscopy, with special attention to quantitative comparisons. The general structures of the mouthparts are similar in males and females. However, the maxillary and labial palp

BACKGROUND: The seven-spot ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata, is a key predatory natural enemy widely deployed for biological control of agricultural pests. Olfaction is crucial for prey location and searching, yet the molecular mechanisms of chemoreception in this species remain largely unknown.
RESULTS: Antennal transcriptome analysis identified a repertoire of 24 odorant receptors (ORs), of which CsepOR1 exhibited the highest expression level in the antennae. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis confirmed that CsepOR1 is predominantly expressed in femal

Social insects rely on multimodal communication systems to coordinate both individual and colony-level responses, yet the sensory foundations underlying the perception of combined signal components remain poorly understood. In ants, alarm communication often integrates chemical and vibroacoustic cues, but how these modalities are detected and processed by individual workers is still largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the peripheral detection of multimodal alarm signals in Myrmica scabrinodis, examining how workers detect concurrent alarm pheromones and stridulations. Our electr

Moechotypa diphysis (Pascoe) is one of the most important pests in agriculture and forestry. However, there are few studies focusing on the external morphology of M. diphysis adults. In this study, the mouthparts of M. diphysis adults were observed by the scanning electron microscope to compare the quantity and distribution of the sensilla on the maxillary and labial palps. The results showed that there are four segments on the maxillary palps and three segments on the labial palps. The length of each segment of the maxillary and labial palps is larger in the female than that in the male. Six

BACKGROUND: Successful cooperation depends on reliable identification of friends and foes. Social insects discriminate colony members (nestmates/friends) from foreign workers (non-nestmates/foes) by colony-specific, multi-component colony odors. Traditionally, complex processing in the brain has been regarded as crucial for colony recognition. Odor information is represented as spatial patterns of activity and processed in the primary olfactory neuropile, the antennal lobe (AL) of insects, which is analogous to the vertebrate olfactory bulb. Correlative evidence indicates that the spatial acti

Insect olfactory systems detect environmental volatiles to guide key behaviors. The specific binding of odorants to olfactory neurons mediated by odorant receptors (ORs) constitutes the fundamental basis of olfaction. The brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) is a major global rice pest; however, there have been few studies on the function of BPH NlugORs. Here, we conducted transcriptome sequencing of adult and nymph antennae with differential expression analysis and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) validation to screen candidate OR genes. We functionally characterized three NlugORs (Nl

Nestmate recognition in ants is regulated through the detection of cuticular hydrocarbons by odorant receptors (ORs) in the antennae. These ORs are crucial for maintaining colony cohesion that allows invasive ant species to dominate colonized environments. In the invasive Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, ORs regulating nestmate recognition are thought to be present in a clade of nine-exon odorant receptors, but the identity of the specific genes remains unknown. We sought to narrow down the list of candidate genes using transcriptomics and phylostratigraphy. Comparative transcriptomic analys

The innervation of the antennal heart of the cockroach Periplaneta americana was studied with immunocytochemical techniques on both the light and electron microscopic levels. The antennal heart is innervated by two efferent systems, both using one biogenic amine in combination with neuropeptides. In one, we found co-localization of serotonin with proctolin and allatostatin. These fibers most likely originate from paired neurons located in the suboesophageal ganglion. In the second system, we found octopamine co-localized with the short neuropeptide F. The source of this second system is dorsal

Among macrocyclic lactones (ML), ivermectin (IVM) and moxidectin (MOX) potentially affect all Ecdysozoan species, with dung beetles being particularly sensitive. The comparative effects of IVM and MOX on adult dung beetles were assessed for the first time to determine both the physiological sub-lethal symptoms and pre-lethal consequences. Inhibition of antennal response and ataxia were tested as two intuitive and ecologically relevant parameters by obtaining the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) values and interpolating other relevant toxicity thresholds derived from concentration-re

In early years of neurogenetics of Drosophila, most of us were inclined to believe that behavior of the fruit fly is largely stereotyped and hard-wired. This, at least, was a common prejudice when genetic analysis of olfaction began. We now know that Drosophila like other insects is capable of several types of learning or experience-dependent modification of behavior.

An increasing body of evidence indicates that the association between different plant species may lead to a reduction in insect herbivory, i.e. associational resistance. This might be due to a top-down regulation of herbivores by increased numbers of natural enemies or to a disruptive bottom-up influence of lower host plant accessibility. In particular, the richer plant communities release more diverse plant odours that may disturb olfactory-guided host choice and mating behaviour of insect herbivores, i.e. the "semiochemical diversity hypothesis". However, this hypothesis has been rarely test

Carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a crucial role in the host search/localization process of bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L., and Cimex hemipterus (F.). Current research on the CO2 perception by bed bugs mainly focuses on their behavioral responses, and the molecular mechanisms are still unclear. In addition, existing research has mainly been conducted on C. lectularius with very little research on C. hemipterus. In this study, we investigated the behavioral response of C. hemipterus to CO2 and analyzed the role of antennae in the CO2 sensing process. Then, potential CO2 receptor genes were screened th

Agonistic behaviors are crucial and ubiquitous among animals for the competition of limited resources. Although the study of aggression has been a popular topic, plenty of studies focused on model organisms, and typically on crayfish and lobsters for crustaceans. Variations of the agonistic behaviors and the underpinning eliciting cues of other crustaceans therefore have not been fully explored. In the present study, we targeted Stenopus, a genus of shrimp-like crustaceans that displays prominent agonistic behaviors when encountering conspecifics of the same sex owing to their monogamous socia
