MicroRNA Responses Associated with Vector-Borne Diseases in Humans and Arthropod Vectors: A Systematic Review.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective disease management and control, with host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) emerging as promising disease biomarkers. This systematic review surveys research conducted on miRNA responses in disease vectors and human hosts of VBDs. A systematic search of four databases and manual searching identified 93 qualifying articles. Numerous VBDs were described, with the most common focus on dengue (21%; n = 15) and Chagas disease (11%; n = 8). Twenty-eight in vivo human studies h

Phylogeographic dynamics of the arthropod vector, the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis).

BACKGROUND: The emergence of vector-borne pathogens in novel geographic areas is regulated by the migration of their arthropod vectors. Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and the pathogens they vector, including the causative agents of Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis, continue to grow in their population sizes and to expand in geographic range. Migration of this vector over the previous decades has been implicated as the cause of the re-emergence of the most prevalent infectious diseases in North America. METHODS: We systematically collected ticks from across New York State (here

Important experimental parameters for determining infection rates in arthropod vectors using pool screening approaches.

Measuring transmission of a vector-borne infection is essential to understanding infection dynamics. When infection prevalence in the vector population is low, transmission is often measured by pool screening (also referred to as group testing). Several investigators have developed statistical methods to recover infection prevalence estimates from pool screen data. These are based on models that contain certain assumptions, and a pool screening approach must be designed to take these into account if accurate estimates of infection prevalence are to be obtained. Here we describe these assumptio

[Control of arthropod vectors of human diseases in intertropical Africa: its importance (author's transl)].

Intertropical Africa is the first area in the world for the frequency of arthropod born human diseases, such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, viral infections (f.i.yellow fever), various filariasis and chiefly onchocerciasis. Control of arthropod vectors is very important indeed in this area. It requires a closed collaboration between entomologists, biologists, hygienists and tropical physicians. Chemical control is still preponderant but it must be associated, as often as possible, with physical, biological and genetic means of control.

Ambivalent Roles of Oxidative Stress in Triangular Relationships among Arthropod Vectors, Pathogens and Hosts.

Blood-feeding arthropods, particularly ticks and mosquitoes are considered the most important vectors of arthropod-borne diseases affecting humans and animals. While feeding on blood meals, arthropods are exposed to high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) since heme and other blood components can induce oxidative stress. Different ROS have important roles in interactions among the pathogens, vectors, and hosts. ROS influence various metabolic processes of the arthropods and some have detrimental effects. In this review, we investigate the various roles of ROS in these arthropods, includin

Evaluating Graphene-treated Fabrics as an Innovative Platform for Enhancing Soldier Protection from Arthropod Vectors.

Military personnel are highly vulnerable to arthropod-borne diseases, and current personal protective measures-especially pyrethroid-treated uniforms-have limitations in durability and efficacy against insecticide-resistant vectors. This study evaluated a novel non-insecticidal approach using graphene-treated fabrics to enhance soldier protection from mosquito bites. To evaluate the potential of graphene to prevent mosquito biting, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles albimanus biting rates were monitored on graphene-treated vs. control fabrics under an arm-in-cage protocol. Graphene was applied to mil

Stochastic processes govern bacterial communities from the blood of pikas and from their arthropod vectors.

Vector-borne microbes influence pathogen transmission and blood microbiomes, thereby affecting the emergence of infectious diseases. Thus, understanding the relationship between host and vector microbiomes is of importance. In this study, we investigated the bacterial community composition, diversity and assembly of the flea (Rhadinopsylla dahurica vicina), torsalo (Hypoderma curzonial), and the blood and gut of their shared pika host, Ochotona curzoniae. Bartonella, Sphingomonas and Bradyrhizobium were enriched in blood, while Wolbachia and Fusobacterium were more abundant in fleas and torsal

Speculations on biting midges and other bloodsucking arthropods as alternative vectors of Leishmania.

Sand flies remain the only proven vectors of Leishmania spp. but recent implementation of PCR techniques has led to increasing speculation about "alternative vectors", including biting midges. Here, we summarize that PCR has considerable limits for studing the role of bloodsucking arthropods in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis. The Leishmania life cycle in the sand fly includes a complex series of interactions which are in many cases species-specific, the early phase of the infection is, however, non-specific to sand flies. These facts should be considered in detection of Leishmania in ,"alte

[The principal arthropod vectors of disease. What are the risks of travellers' to be bitten? To be infected?].

Many blood-sucking arthropods are potential vectors of disease. To become a vector, the arthropod must be susceptible to the infective agent and must survive the incubation period so as to transmit the pathogens to a host. While some arthropod associated diseases affect only man (e.g. malaria) most of these diseases are (anthropo-) zoonoses with man often an accidental host. The risk of contamination depends on the one hand on the biting behaviour of the vector, its biology and distribution, and on the other hand on the sites visited by the traveller, the length of his stay, his activities, th

Elevational Changes in Bacterial Microbiota Structure and Diversity in an Arthropod-Disease Vector.

Environmental conditions change rapidly along elevational gradients and have been found to affect community composition in macroscopic taxa, with lower diversity typically observed at higher elevations. In contrast, microbial community responses to elevation are still poorly understood. Specifically, the effects of elevation on vector-associated microbiota have not been studied to date, even though the within-vector microbial community is known to influence vector competence for a range of zoonotic pathogens. Here we characterize the structure and diversity of the bacterial microbiota in an im

Comparison of the hemolysis machinery in two evolutionarily distant blood-feeding arthropod vectors of human diseases.

Host blood protein digestion plays a pivotal role in the ontogeny and reproduction of hematophagous vectors. The gut of hematophagous arthropods stores and slowly digests host blood and represents the primary gateway for transmitted pathogens. The initial step in blood degradation is induced lysis of host red blood cells (hemolysis), which releases hemoglobin for subsequent processing by digestive proteolytic enzymes. The activity cycles and characteristics of hemolysis in vectors are poorly understood. Hence, we investigated hemolysis in two evolutionarily distant blood-feeding arthropods: Th

Spatial modeling of human risk of exposure to vector-borne pathogens based on epidemiological versus arthropod vector data.

Understanding spatial patterns of human risk of exposure to arthropod vectors and their associated pathogens is critical for targeting limited prevention, surveillance, and control resources (e.g., spatial targeting of vaccination, drug administration, or education campaigns; use of sentinel sites to monitor vector abundance; and identifying areas for most effective use of pesticides). Vector-borne disease risk can, in many cases, be modeled with high predictive accuracy by using geographic information system approaches because abundances of vectors and pathogen reservoirs often are associated

The many and varied niches occupied by Yersinia pestis as an arthropod-vectored zoonotic pathogen.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of bubonic and pneumonic plague, has a complex lifestyle, cycling between both arthropod and mammalian hosts. This pathogen has previously been shown to survive intracellularly within macrophages and to be capable of biofilm formation within the flea, suggesting the development of a range of strategies to ensure survival throughout its life cycle, including expression of virulence factors and tight regulation of its genes.

Applications of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry to the Identification of Parasites and Arthropod Vectors of Human Diseases.

Arthropod vectors and parasites are identified morphologically or, more recently, by molecular methods. Both methods are time consuming and require expertise and, in the case of molecular methods, specific devices. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) identification of bacteria has meant a major change in clinical microbiology laboratories because of its simplicity, speed and specificity, and its capacity to identify microorganisms, in some cases, directly from the sample (urine cultures, blood cultures). Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been sh

Assessment of arthropod vectors of infectious diseases in areas of U.S. troop deployment in the Persian Gulf.

Beginning in August 1990, approximately 800,000 coalition troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. There was substantial concern about arthropod-borne diseases, particularly sand fly fever and cutaneous leishmaniasis, because of high morbidity rates in the Persian Gulf during World War II (WWII). In sharp contrast to WWII, there was no report of sand fly fever among coalition forces and only 31 cases of leishmaniasis among 697,000 U.S. troops. To further evaluate the risk of arthropod-borne diseases, an entomologic survey was conducted in 12 ar

Complex transmission epidemiology of neglected Australian arboviruses: diverse non-human vertebrate hosts and competent arthropod invertebrate vectors.

More than 75 arboviruses are indigenous to Australia, of which at least 13 are known to cause disease in humans. Alphaviruses are the most common arboviruses, notably including Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses, which contribute a significant public health and economic burden in Australia. Both can cause febrile illness with arthritic symptoms. Each circulates nationally across diverse climates and environments, and has multi-host, multi-vector dynamics. Several medically important flaviviruses also circulate in Australia. Infection with Murray Valley encephalitis or Kunjin viruses is less

Four Species of Under-reported Parasitic Arthropods in Mexico and their Potential Role as Vectors of Pathogens.

Numerous arthropod taxa are important in human and veterinary medicine. The salivary secretions and feces of arthropods can cause allergic reactions in host vertebrates or harbor pathogens. Also, bites can be a risk factor for secondary infections. Documenting the diversity of arthropods of medical and veterinary importance remains an important aspect of disease control and prevention. We provide new records of ectoparasitic arthropods from Mexico that are of potential medical or veterinary relevance. Towards a thermodynamic mechanistic model for the effect of temperature on arthropod vector competence for transmission of arboviruses.

Arboviruses such as West Nile virus (WNV), bluetongue virus (BTV), dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infect their arthropod vectors over a range of average temperatures depending on the ambient temperature. How the transmission efficiency of an arbovirus (i.e. vector competence) varies with temperature influences not only the short term risk of arbovirus outbreaks in humans and livestock but also the long term impact of climate change on the geographical range of the virus. The strength of the interaction between viral surface (glyco)protein (GP) and the host cell receptor (Cr)
