Comparison of lower limb segment forces during running on artificial turf and natural grass.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial turf, soon after being introduced in the 1980s, became associated with an increased injury incidence in football players. While more recent generations of artificial turf have mitigated the problem, perception of the material is still widely negative. So, the decision to play the 2015 Fe'de'ration Internationale de Football Association Women s World Cup in Canada on artificial turf was met with vocal criticism by many players. One common approach is to assess injury incidence to quantify risk differences in playing surfaces. This, however, does not account for possible

Fifteen years of experience with Integral-Leg-Prosthesis: Cohort study of artificial limb attachment system.

Integral-Leg-Prosthesis (ILP) is a comparatively new attachment system that allows direct skeletal docking of artificial limbs. Between January 1999 and December 2013, 69 patients with transfemoral amputation were fitted with ILPs by a single German surgeon. Device design iterations and surgical techniques evolved during these years. For the purposes of comparison, patients receiving the first two designs and procedure iterations were placed in group 1 and the patients fitted with the final design were placed in group 2. Infection rate and planned and unplanned surgical interventions were stat

fNIRS-Based Upper Limb Motion Intention Recognition Using an Artificial Neural Network for Transhumeral Amputees.

Prosthetic arms are designed to assist amputated individuals in the performance of the activities of daily life. Brain machine interfaces are currently employed to enhance the accuracy as well as number of control commands for upper limb prostheses. However, the motion prediction for prosthetic arms and the rehabilitation of amputees suffering from transhumeral amputations is limited. In this paper, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based approach for the recognition of human intention for six upper limb motions is proposed. The data were extracted from the study of fifteen healthy

Surface-related differences in lower-limb biomechanics during running on concrete and artificial turf using OpenSim.

Surface-related alterations in joint loading during trail running remain unclear. Twenty male recreational rearfoot-strike runners performed overground running at 3.3 m/s on concrete and artificial turf. Three-dimensional kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRFs), and surface electromyography (sEMG) were recorded. An OpenSim Gait2392 model combined with Static Optimisation and Joint Reaction Analysis was used to estimate ankle, knee, and hip joint reaction forces (JRFs). Vertical and anteroposterior GRFs and vertical JRF peaks showed no significant differences between surfaces. However, the co

Analysis of the therapeutic effect of artificial leather embedding combined with fascial sleeve flap transplantation on chronic wounds of lower limbs with bone and plate exposure.

BACKGROUND: After severe trauma of lower limbs, bone, tendon or plate graft exposure is common. The traditional repair method is to use a variety of skin flap transplantation to cover the exposed part, but the wound often can not heal after operation, or the wound is cracked, ulcer, sinus, bone and steel plate are exposed again after wound healing. The reason for this result is that when the flap is covered, the space around the bone plate is not well closed, forming a dead cavity, blood and exudate accumulation, hematoma formation or infection, and finally the wound ruptures again. In additio

Beyond Body Weight: The Influence of Artificial Load on Lower-Limb Joint-Specific Landing Kinematics and Coordination Dynamics.

Effective motor coordination is essential for adaptive athletic performance, including musculoskeletal injury prevention, particularly in high impact activities. Understanding how the lower extremities adapt to added constraints, such as increased load, can provide valuable insights into the resilience of movement patterns. This study examined the influence of added load on intralimb coordination during a drop-vertical jump (DVJ). Twenty-six participants (14 female, age = 23.10 +/- 3.97 years, 76.81 +/- 18.73kg) performed 5 body weight DVJs and 5 with an additional 25% body weight using a weig

Active Neural Network Control for a Wearable Upper Limb Rehabilitation Exoskeleton Robot Driven by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles.

Pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) has been widely used in rehabilitation and other fields as a flexible and safe actuator. In this paper, a PAM-actuated wearable exoskeleton robot is developed for upper limb rehabilitation. However, accurate modeling and control of the PAM are difficult due to complex hysteresis. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an active neural network method for hysteresis compensation, where a neural network (NN) is utilized as the hysteresis compensator and unscented Kalman filtering is used to estimate the weights and approximation error of the NN in real time.

Artificial Octopus-Limb-Like Adhesive Patches for Cupping-Driven Transdermal Delivery with Nanoscale Control of Stratum Corneum.

Drug delivery through complex skin is currently being studied using various innovative structural and material strategies due to the low delivery efficiency of the multilayered stratum corneum as a barrier function. Existing microneedle-based or electrical stimulation methods have made considerable advances, but they still have technical limitations to reduce skin discomfort and increase user convenience. This work introduces the design, operation mechanism, and performance of noninvasive transdermal patch with dual-layered suction chamber cluster (d-SCC) mimicking octopus-limb capable of wet

Impact of Inhaled Corticosteroids on the Modulation of Respiratory Defensive Reflexes During Artificial Limb Exercise in Ovalbumin-Sensitized Rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Cough is a major lower airway defense mechanism that can be triggered by exercise in asthma patients. Studies on cough reflex in experimental animal models revealed a decrease of cough reflex sensitivity during exercise in healthy animals, but a lack of desensitization in ovalbumin-sensitized rabbits. The aim of our study is to evaluate the impact of inhaled corticosteroids on cough reflex during artificial limb exercise in an animal model of eosinophilic airway inflammation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen adult ovalbumin-sensitized rabbits were randomly divided into two groups.

[Stenosis of the Right Coronary Limb of Interposed Artificial Graft 28 Years After Cabrol Technique;Report of a Case].

Cabrol technique is one of the modified Bentall procedures. However, it has become nearly obsolete over the years because of reports of stenosis, thrombosis, and occlusion of the interposed graft. A 76-year-old man, who had undergone Cabrol technique 28 years before, presented with worsening exertional dyspnea and, was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation and tricuspid valve regurgitation. Preoperative angiography revealed stenosis of the right limb of the interposed artificial graft, and he underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in addition to mitral valve replacement (MVR) and
