CT for asbestosis: value and limitations.

CT is more sensitive than clinical evaluation for the detection of asbestosis but is inevitably less sensitive and less specific than pathologic evaluation. For the asbestos-exposed individual, CT is useful for the evaluation of suspected lung masses, particularly rounded atelectasis [15], for identifying pleural plaques, and for confirming unequivocal asbestosis (grade 2 or grade 3 [8]). CT also will identify and quantify emphysema as a cause of physiologic impairment. Because clinicians commonly use CT to resolve clinical uncertainties, radiologists often feel pressured to categorize disease

Asbestosis in the industries of the Barcelona area.

This presentation is the result of the survey of eight industries with asbestosis risk in the Barcelona area (two of fibro-cement, three of auto brakes, two of textiles, and one of insulation materials). Of 1,472 workers, 271 or 18.5% have asbestosis. Pleural involvement in asbestosis is twice as common as that of the lung, 15.7% versus 8.5%. Pulmonary asbestosis without pleural participation is seen in only 2.6% of cases. Pleural plaques, calcified and not calcified, are detected in only a few cases. There is a definite correlation between the incidence of asbestosis and the exposure time: fr

Retention of asbestos fibres in lungs of workers with asbestosis, asbestosis and lung cancer, and mesothelioma in Asbestos township.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a mineralogical study on the particles retained in the necropsied lungs of a homogenous group of asbestos miners and millers from Asbestos township (and a local reference population) and to consider the hypothesis that there is a difference in size between fibres retained in the lungs of patients with asbestosis with and without lung cancer. METHODS: Samples of lung tissue were obtained from 38 patients with asbestosis without lung cancer, 25 with asbestosis and lung cancer, and 12 with mesothelioma, from necropsied Quebec chrysotile miners and millers from Asbestos town

Progression of asbestosis predicts lung cancer.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To explore whether the progression of asbestosis correlates with the risk of lung cancer among patients with asbestosis. DESIGN: A group of 85 asbestosis patients (78 men and 7 women) were radiographically followed up between 1979 and 1987. Two or three posteroanterior radiographs taken from each patient in 1978 to 1979, 1983 to 1984, and 1986 to 1987 were classified according to the International Labour Office 1980 classification and were used to divide the patients into progressors and nonprogressors. Follow-up for cancer was done automatically through the files of the Fin

[Asbestosis accompanied by primary peritoneal mesothelioma].

Diffuse, continuous abdominal pain and weight loss of 10 kg in 3 months were observed in a 57-year-old female patient. A CT examination of the abdomen was requested to rule out a malignant gynecological tumor. The CT study, however, showed a small amount of ascites and a thick sheet-like mass covering the internal anterior abdominal wall. On the basis of these CT findings, a peritoneal mesothelioma was suspected, which was confirmed by diagnostic laparotomy. The patient's history revealed exposure to asbestos at work from 21 to 24 years of age. The following signs of asbestosis and asbestos-re

Chronic constrictive pericarditis associated with asbestosis.

Observation of chronic constrictive pericarditis associated with pulmonary asbestosis is reported here. Heart catheterization revealed typical patterns of cardiac constriction. The diagnosis of asbestosis was based on pathologic features associated with a long history of asbestos dust exposure without evidence for tuberculosis. The etiology of this constrictive pericarditis was related to an asbestosis pericarditis involvement.

Comorbidities and Causes of Death of Patients With Asbestosis.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidities are common and affect the prognosis of patients with interstitial lung diseases, but few previous studies have investigated patients with asbestosis. METHODS: We collected comorbidities and death causes of 116 patients with asbestosis treated in Oulu University Hospital. Causes of death were confirmed by autopsy in 68% of the cases. RESULTS: The most common comorbidities of asbestosis patients were pleural plaques (96%) and coronary artery disease (CAD; 67%). The prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis was 8.6%. The most common underlying causes of death were asbestosis (

[Pulmonary silicosis (not including asbestosis and berylliosis].

The pleuro-pulmonary pathology of asbestos, top most of silicates, is today well known. Other silicates, talcum powder, clays, micas essentially, are exploited and commercialized. Their pathology is less well known and often contradictory because of the heterogeneity of the inhaled minerals. All can contain large quantities of quartz and some varieties of talcum and a considerable proportion of asbestos fibres. These minerals can provoke severe pneumoconioses, silicoses and asbestoses respectively. Some relatively pure products do not contain these contaminants. In case of intense and prolonge

Asbestosis in a Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata).

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhalation of asbestos, a fibrous mineral. It is one of the most severe diseases resulting from environmental contamination. We found asbestosis in a female Japanese macaque over 25 years of age that died from senility. Clear needle-like crystals were deposited throughout the lung lobes, particularly in the perivascular areas. Asbestos bodies were observed in some of these crystals. Fibrosis without inflammation was observed in the periarterial and peribronchiolar regions. The crystals were identified as tremolite, and a total of 16,633,968 asbest

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of pleural changes in asbestosis].

One of the characteristic biological effects of the inhaled asbestos dust is the formation of hyaline thickenings on all pleurae in the form of plaques, in which calcium could be deposited. Due to the difficulties in the differentiation of the pleural hyalinosis with the conventional X-ray methods, the authors studied the potentialities of echography in 18 patients in contact with asbestos. They used two apparatuses (type "grey scale" 3401 of the firm (Brüel & Kjaër with linear scanning and "Siam" with sector scanning). Echography could establish areas of thickening on the parietal and diaphra

Pleural thickening and gas transfer in asbestosis.

Anomalies in the ratio of transfer factor to effective alveolar volume as an indicator of pulmonary gas exchange in cases of asbestosis may be related to diffuse pleural thickening. To examine the effect of pleural disease on gas transfer the plain chest radiographs of patients with asbestosis were assessed by two observers for profusion of parenchymal opacities and extent of pleural disease and the results were related to lung function. In 30 cases of category 1 profusion of parenchymal abnormality (according to the ILO international classification of radiographs for pneumoconiosis) transfer

Pathology of asbestosis- An update of the diagnostic criteria: Report of the asbestosis committee of the college of american pathologists and pulmonary pathology society.

UNLABELLED: Asbestosis is defined as diffuse pulmonary fibrosis caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of asbestos fibers. Pathologically, both pulmonary fibrosis of a particular pattern and evidence of excess asbestos in the lungs must be present. Clinically, the disease usually progresses slowly, with a typical latent period of more than 20 years from first exposure to onset of symptoms. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY FIBROSIS: The pulmonary fibrosis of asbestosis is interstitial and has a basal subpleural distribution, similar to that seen in idiopathic pulmonary fibro

Antemortem diagnosis of asbestosis by screening chest radiograph correlated with postmortem histologic features of asbestosis: a study of 273 cases.

BACKGROUND: Accuracy in the clinical diagnosis of asbestosis has significant implications for the future health of affected patients as well as serious medicolegal implications for both patients and asbestos-associated industries. The radiographic gold-standard for diagnosis of asbestosis has been the plain chest radiograph, and in many asbestosis-screening clinics, chest radiograph abnormalities in conjunction with a history of asbestos exposure have been the mainstay of diagnosis. No studies have yet compared the antemortem chest radiographic diagnosis of asbestosis with the subsequent prese

Asbestosis Mimicking Metastatic Lung Cancer: Case Report.

The clinical diagnosis of asbestosis is primarily based on chest radiographic evidence of pleural thickening and interstitial fibrosis combined with a history of exposure to asbestos. We report herein the case of a 65-year-old man with asbestosis pathologically diagnosed after surgical lung biopsy. He had a work history including farming, cementing, and casting and was admitted with dyspnea. Chest computed tomography revealed multiple well-defined nodules in both lungs and a 4.1 cm peribronchial consolidation with fibrotic changes in the right lower lobe. We suspected metastatic lung cancer an

Increased pulmonary gamma interferon production in asbestosis.

In order to determine if disordered cellular immune processes are present in the lungs of persons with asbestosis, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) on 26 patients with either crocidolite- or chrysotile-induced pulmonary asbestosis and measured the spontaneous release of gamma interferon (IFN gamma), a marker of increased cellular immune activity. For comparison, 18 control subjects and 7 patients with active pulmonary sarcoidosis were also studied. Recovered BAL cells were cultured for 24 h (5 x 10(6)/ml), and the supernatant was assayed for interferon by determining inhibition of cyt

Mixed pneumoconiosis: silicosis, asbestosis, talcosis, and berylliosis.

Mixed pneumoconiosis is pulmonary disease due to two or more inhaled mineral irritants. Chronic disease due to beryllium has not been a component of any described mixed pneumoconiosis. A man with occupational exposure to a combination of dusts developed severe pulmonary disease. Silicosis, talcosis, asbestosis, and berylliosis were all documented by an open biopsy of the lung. The varieties of mixed pneumoconiosis are summarized.

Incidence of mesothelioma and asbestosis by occupation in a diverse workforce.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize detailed patterns of mesothelioma and asbestosis incidence in the workforce as part of an occupational disease surveillance program in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) cohort was established using workers' compensation claims data and includes 2.18 million workers employed from 1983 to 2014. Workers were followed for mesothelioma and asbestosis diagnoses in Ontario Cancer Registry, physician, hospital, and ambulatory care records through 2016. Trends in incidence rates were estimated over the study period. Cox p
