Experimental infections of copepods and sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus with small ensheathed and large third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae).

Free-swimming ensheathed larvae of Anisakis simplex were shown experimentally to be ingested by the copepods Oitona similis and Acartia tonsa and by the nauplii of barnacles Balanus sp. The larvae did not grow in the copepod hemocoel. Experimental infections of various malacostracans were unsuccessful. Sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus are naturally infected with larvae of A. simplex in coastal brackish water. Such sticklebacks may have acquired the infection by eating either a crustacean host or third-stage larvae (L3) from fish. Experimental infections of cod Gadus morhua with L3 from visc

Micro-evolutionary implications of allozymic and morphometric variations in sealworms Pseudoterranova sp. (Ascaridoidea: Anisakidae) among sympatric hosts from the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

We found significant morphometric and electrophoretic differences between sealworm larvae collected from four sympatric fish host species off the central coast of Chile. The South American sea lion, Otaria byronia, is a suitable host and most likely the only definitive host species in the study area. Morphological patterns of caudal papillae in adult males collected from sea lions and electrophoretic evidence from larvae and adults substantiate our conclusion that they belong to just one, new species yet to be described. The genetic and morphometric differences found between sealworm larvae fr

Differentiation of cuticular structures during the growth of the third-stage larva of Ascaris suum (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) after emerging from the egg.

In order to monitor the early phases of the development of Ascaris suum from domestic pigs, third-stage larvae, retrieved from the liver and the lungs, were studied by analyzing worm growth and length increase of individual transverse annuli in the cuticle. Material for study using light and scanning electron microscopy was obtained from experimental infections. The results show that the third-stage larva (not the second-stage) after emergence from the egg grows continuously, without an ecdysis in the liver. During growth, each annulus is split into a complex of 2 subannuli, each of which atta

Observations on the transmission and development of Toxocara pteropodis (Ascaridoidea: Nematoda) in the Australian grey-headed flying-fox, Pteropus poliocephalus (Pteropodidae: Megachiroptera).

Findings in the Australian Grey-Headed Flying-Fox, Pteropus poliocephalus, have elucidated the life-cycle of Toxocara pteropodis. In adult bats, other than parturient females, larvae were found only in the livers. Following parturition, larvae were recovered only from mammary glands up to 2 weeks post-partum. Developing larvae were found only in the intestine of young bats from the age of two days onwards; there was no evidence of pulmonary migration. The evidence indicates that juvenile bats commence passing Toxocara eggs in their faeces at about 2 months of age and expel the worms spontaneou

Morphological study of Lappetascaris lutjani Rasheed, 1965 (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) from a new host, Ilisha compressa Randall (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae), in the Persian Gulf off Iraq.

The genus Lappetascaris is a poorly known ascaridoid group. In the present study, the detailed morphology of the type species of Lappetascaris, L. lutjani, was further studied using light and scanning electron microscopy, based on the newly collected specimens from a new host Ilisha compressa Randall (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae) in the Persian Gulf off Iraq. Some previously unreported morphological features of taxonomic significance were observed, including the vulva with swollen lips, the egg with thick shell, the precloacal papillae being 10-14 pairs and the large mastoid phasmids in the

A new species of genus Hysterothylacium Ward & Magath, 1917 (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) from the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili (Risso) (Carangiformes: Carangidae) in the Persian Gulf off Iraq.

A new ascaridoid nematode, Hysterothylacium malleocaudatum sp. n., was described using both light and scanning electron microscopy, based on specimens collected from the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili (Risso) (Carangiformes: Carangidae) in the Persian Gulf off Iraq. The new species can be distinguished from the congeners by the combination of the following features, the presence of remarkable lateral alae starting from base of ventro-lateral lips, the short intestinal caecum and long ventricular appendix (intestinal caecum representing 21.1-40.5% of oesophageal length, ratio of intestinal

Distribution of whaleworm (Anisakis simplex, Nematoda, Ascaridoidea) L3 larvae in three species of marine fish; saithe (Pollachius virens (L.)), cod (Gadus morhua L.) and redfish (Sebastes marinus (L.)) from Norwegian waters.

The frequency distribution of Anisakis simplex L3 larvae between host tissues was investigated in three host species: saithe, cod and redfish. Fish were sampled from Norwegian coastal waters and examined for the presence of A. simplex in muscle and viscera. In all three of the host species, A. simplex larvae were most frequently detected in the viscera; the percentages of total infection for saithe, cod and redfish were 99.6%, 97.8% and 88.0%, respectively. In general, the distribution patterns of A. simplex L3 between muscle and viscera were not significantly affected by host size. The observ

Redescription of Porrocaecum semiteres (Zeder, 1800) (Nematoda: Ascaridida) from the Song Thrush Turdus philomelos (Passeriformes: Turdidae).

INTRODUCTION: Porrocaecum semiteres (Zeder, 1800) (Ascaridida: Ascaridoidea) occurs frequently in various birds in Europe. However, the knowledge of the morphology of this species remains insufficient. METHODS: Light and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the detailed morphology of adults of P. semiteres based on newly collected specimens from Turdus philomelos in the Czech Republic. RESULTS: Some previously unreported morphological features were revealed, including the presence of a medio-apical notch, 70-80 small conical denticles and one pair of submedial pores on each lip, t

Abnormal Helminth Egg Development, Strange Morphology, and the Identification of Intestinal Helminth Infections.

Occasionally, abnormal forms of parasitic helminth eggs are detected during routine diagnostics. This finding can prove problematic in diagnosis because morphologic analysis based on tightly defined measurements is the primary method used to identify the infecting species and molecular confirmation of species is not always feasible. We describe instances of malformed nematode eggs (primarily from members of the superfamily Ascaridoidea) from human clinical practice and experimental trials on animals. On the basis of our observations and historical literature, we propose that unusual developmen

Morphological and genetic characterization of Contracaecum and Porrocaecum species from the wild birds in Turkey.

The superfamily Ascaridoidea are parasitic nematodes in vertebrates, including birds and humans. In order to investigate the presence and distribution of these parasitic nematodes in birds acting as the definitive host, 157 birds of 64 bird species belonging to 16 orders were collected and necropsied in the Kızılırmak Delta area in the Bafra district of Samsun province. The parasites collected were fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol and identified under a light microscope, and morphologically important regions were photographed for identification. The parasitological examination determined morphologic

"Begging the Question"-Does Toxocara Infection/Exposure Associate with Multiple Sclerosis-Risk?

Although the cause of multiple sclerosis (MS) is unclear, infectious agents, including some parasitic roundworms (nematodes), have been proposed as possible risk factors or contributors. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational studies to evaluate whether there is a possible association between infection with, or exposure to, one or more members of the genus Toxocara (phylum Nematoda; superfamily Ascaridoidea) and MS. We undertook a search of public literature databases to identify relevant studies and then used a random-effects meta-analysis model to

[Human Pseudoterranova and Anisakis cases in Iceland 2004-2020].

During 2004-2020 in total 18 anisakid larvae (Nematoda) were sent in to the Laboratory of Parasitology at Keldur for investigation and species identification. Fourteen had temporarily lived within the human body and were alive when detected, three were noticed alive in food just before being consumed, one larva was found dead. Pseudoterranova decipiens was found í 16 instances (89%), Anisakis simplex in two (11%). The one Anisakis case was a wriggling larva detected in the diaper of a baby that was believed to have ingested the larva with undercooked fish three days earlier in the kindergarten

Baylisascaris procyonis Roundworm in Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor), Mexico.

We found the zoonotic nematode, Baylisascaris procyonis, in a common raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Mexico. Expansion of raccoons into human-dominated regions might increase the risk of B. procyonis infections in humans. Increased surveillance and healthcare provider awareness of baylisascariasis in Mexico will be needed to prevent those infections in humans.

Baylisascaris procyonis on the rise in Europe: a comprehensive review and analysis of occurrence data.

The raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) was introduced to Europe by its final host, the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor), which has been spreading uncontrollably there since the early 20th century. The raccoon is gaining importance due to the spread of the raccoon roundworm, which is pathogenic to humans and can cause severe disease through oral ingestion of infectious egg stages. Totally, 146 raccoons from central and western Germany were examined for B. procyonis via necropsy. In addition, an extensive literature search was conducted on the occurrence of B. procyonis in Europe.
