Heat Treatment Abolishes Cytotoxicity of the Caterpillar Medicinal Mushroom Cordyceps militaris (Ascomycota) Cold-Phosphate-Buffered Saline Extract.

Cordyceps militaris is an entomopathogenic fungus that is traditionally used in East Asian medicine. The fungus contains various bioactive compounds that have potential therapeutic applications. Although the immunostimulatory effects of hot-water extracts from C. militaris were previously demonstrated through dectin-1-mediated pathways, the biological properties of cold-water extracts remain unexplored. Therefore, in this study, the physicochemical properties and biological effects of cold phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) extracts from C. militaris fruiting bodies (CPE-CM) were investigated. Co

Crude Extracts of Talaromyces Strains (Ascomycota) Affect Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) Resistance to Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus.

Viruses contribute significantly to the global decline of honey bee populations. One way to limit the impact of such viruses is the introduction of natural antiviral compounds from fungi as a component of honey bee diets. Therefore, we examined the effect of crude organic extracts from seven strains of the fungal genus Talaromyces in honey bee diets under laboratory conditions. The strains were isolated from bee bread prepared by honey bees infected with chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV). The antiviral effect of the extracts was also quantified in vitro using mammalian cells as a model system

Antibacterial Activity of Different Extracts of Ascomata of Morchella conica and M. esculenta (Ascomycota) against Salmonella Species.

Antibiotic resistance has become a worldwide concern, as it has reduced the clinical efficiency of multiple antibiotics. As a result, screening of novel antibacterial substances for antimicrobial potential has increased. Mushrooms are widely known as a source of antimicrobial agents. The current study was designed to investigate the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of Morchella conica and M. esculenta against typhoidal and nontyphoidal Salmonella species. The sensitivity of S. typhi, S. paratyphi-A, and S. typhimurium was determined using an agar diffusion assay. The standard broth micr

Sporothrix humicola (Ascomycota: Ophiostomatales) - A soil-borne fungus with pathogenic potential in the eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus).

The genus Sporothrix contains both species pathogenic to humans and animals as well as environmental fungi. S. humicola, a member of the latter S. pallida clade, has previously been reported only from soil. We have isolated this dimorphic fungus from multiple cutaneous lesions in two endangered marsupials native to Tasmania. Clinical appearance resembled cutaneous sporotrichosis, highlighting the principle pathogenic potential. Identification was based on partial ITS, β-tubulin and calmodulin gene sequencing.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of two Iranian su-strains of Metarhizium anisopliae (ascomycota: hypocreales) on the mortality rate of American cockroach.

The cockroach is one of the most important disease vectors in world. Entomopathogenic fungi, as three concentrations of spores were taken 1.1 × 105, 1.1 × 107, and 1.1 × 109 conidia/mL from two isolates of Nour and Saravan-Iranian. In this study, the immersion method caused about 13% mortality only in isolation (1 × 109 conidia/mL) of Saravan isolates. Inoculation of isolates below the pronotum did not significantly differ the mortality rate between the two genera (P = 0.8), compared to the pathogenicity of three isolates of M. anisopliae (1.1 × 105, 1.1 × 107, and 1.1 × 109 conidia/mL). Phylogenetic classification at generic level in the absence of distinct phylogenetic patterns of phenotypical variation: a case study in graphidaceae (ascomycota).

Molecular phylogenies often reveal that taxa circumscribed by phenotypical characters are not monophyletic. While re-examination of phenotypical characters often identifies the presence of characters characterizing clades, there is a growing number of studies that fail to identify diagnostic characters, especially in organismal groups lacking complex morphologies. Taxonomists then can either merge the groups or split taxa into smaller entities. Due to the nature of binomial nomenclature, this decision is of special importance at the generic level. Here we propose a new approach to choose among

Histopathological effects of Aspergillus clavatus (Ascomycota: Trichocomaceae) on larvae of the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aspergillus clavatus (Ascomycota: Trichocomaceae) was previously found to be an opportunistic pathogen of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). In the present study, the mechanism leading to its insecticidal activity was investigated regarding histological damages on Culex quinquefasciatus larvae exposed to A. clavatus spores. Multiple concentration assays using spore suspensions (0.5-2.5 × 10(8) spores ml(-1)) revealed 17.0-74.3 % corrected mortalities after 48 h exposure. Heat-deactivated spores induced a lower mortality compared to nonheated spores suggesting that insecticidal effects are active

Antioxidation and Hepatoprotection of Selenium Mycelium Polysaccharides Against Alcoholic Liver Diseases from the Cultivated Morel Mushroom Morchella esculenta (Ascomycota).

The liver was regarded as the most important metabolic and detoxification organ in vivo, and Morchella esculenta had been reported as the admittedly rare edible fungus belonging to Ascomycetes contributing to the abundant bioactivities. The objective of this study aimed to confirm the potential antioxidant activities of selenium mycelium polysaccharides (Se-MIP) from M. esculenta against alcoholic liver diseases (ALD) in mice. The results indicated that a selenium concentration of 25 μg/mL exhibited potential in vitro antioxidant capacities of Se-MIP. The in vivo mice results demonstrated that

Sporothrix chilensis sp. nov. (Ascomycota: Ophiostomatales), a soil-borne agent of human sporotrichosis with mild-pathogenic potential to mammals.

A combination of phylogeny, evolution, morphologies and ecologies has enabled major advances in understanding the taxonomy of Sporothrix species, including members exhibiting distinct lifestyles such as saprobes, human/animal pathogens, and insect symbionts. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS1/2 + 5.8s sequences split Sporothrix genus in two well-defined groups with dissimilar ecologies. Species embedded in the Sporothrix schenckii complex are frequently agents of human and animal sporotrichosis, and some of these are responsible for large sapronoses and zoonoses around the warmer temperate regions

Seasonality of Laboulbenia phaeoxanthae (Ascomycota, Laboulbeniales) and its host Phaeoxantha aequinoctialis (Coleoptera, Carabidae) at a central Amazonian blackwater floodplain.

Terrestrial invertebrates in central Amazonian floodplains must cope with annual long-term inundation. Parasites should be affected mainly indirectly through the specific life-cycles of their hosts. We studied the temporal structure of a beetle-fungus system at a central Amazonian blackwater floodplain (Rio Negro, Brazil). The host species Phaeoxantha aequinoctialis (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Cicindelinae) showed a seasonal, univoltine life-cycle triggered by the annual flood pulse. Infestation frequency of its fungal parasite, Laboulbenia phaeoxanthae (Ascomycota, Laboulbeniales), varied seasona

Efficacy of Cordyceps cicadae (Ascomycota) Mycelium Supplementation for Amelioration of Dry Eye Symptoms: A Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Pilot Study.

Dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial inflammatory ocular surface disorder, affects up to 50% of individuals over 50 years old worldwide and is one of the most common reasons for seeking ophthalmologic care. Generally, topical eye drops or oral drugs are administered to treat DED; however, the use of preservatives in eye drops or the adverse effects of oral drugs are disadvantageous for long-term therapy. Cordyceps cicadae, a traditional Chinese medicinal fungus, possesses anti-inflammatory effects without evident toxicity and is obtainable at low price. Our previous study demonstrated that

Ovicidal potential of Pochonia chlamydosporia isolate Pc-10 (Ascomycota: Sordariomycetes) on egg masses of the snail Pseudosuccinea columella (Mollusca: Gastropoda).

Snails of the species Pseudosuccinea columella are considered intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica, a digenetic trematode that infects bile ducts of ruminants and humans, causing economic damage and serious problems for public health. These gastropods inhabit ponds, have high reproductive capacity, and lay their egg masses in submerged substrates on pond edges where they are exposed to desiccation and microbes, including fungi, that may exert pathogenic effects on the snail and its embryos. This information is relevant for control of the intermediate host and therefore of fasciolosis. With
