Ascophyllum nodosum (ASCO) is a brown seaweed rich in I and bioactive compounds. Previous research demonstrated that feeding incremental amounts of ASCO meal linearly decreased the plasma concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and cortisol in lactating dairy cows, suggesting that ASCO may improve cows' metabolic status during the transition period. We aimed to investigate the effects of supplementing transition dairy cows with ASCO meal or ethylenediamine dihydroiodide (EDDI) on plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones and markers of metabolic status, DMI, and milk yield and compo

Emerging knowledge shows the importance of preweaning nutrition on programming the gastrointestinal microbiome and development of the gut barrier function. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of supplementing cow milk with either intact dried Ulva sp., Ascophyllum nodosum, or Saccharina latissima on growth performance and several gut health parameters of preweaning dairy calves. Forty male Holstein calves were selected based on birth weight (41 ± 4 kg) and plasma Brix percentage (≥8.7%) at d 2 of life. From d 2 to d 42 of life, the control calves (n = 10) were fed with cow milk (8

A dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method, combined with HPLC-UV detection, was developed for the extraction and preconcentration of δ-tocopherol from bovine milk. This method was used to study the effect of supplementing cow feed with the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum on vitamin content in milk. The optimal experimental conditions were determined: 200 μL of chloroform (extraction solvent), 1.0 mL of ethanol (dispersive solvent), 5 mL of water (aqueous phase). Under these optimal conditions the DLLME method provided linearity in the range 0.01 μg/mL to 8 μg/mL with R2 values of 0

In cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production, soil-borne pathogens and salinity stress are among the major environmental constraints that severely limit plant growth and productivity, particularly when they occur simultaneously. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of Verticillium wilt and salinity stress, as well as the potential of seaweed extract and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) to enhance stress tolerance in cotton. Under controlled conditions, the growth substrate was amended with 10% (v/v) AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) and a seaweed derived from Ascophyllum nod

The aim of this study was to establish in laboratory experiments a quantitative link between phenolic pool (production, composition and exudation) in Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus and their potential to bind metals. Additionally, the copper binding capacity of purified phlorotannin was investigated. A reduction in salinity decreased total phenolic contents, altered phenolic composition by increasing proportion of cell-wall phenolics, and also increased phenolic exudation of the two seaweed species. After 15 days at a salinity of 5, the inhibition of photosynthesis observed previous

Globally, poultry production has increased to meet the demand for animal protein. Traditionally, antibiotic growth promoters have been used to enhance growth performance and prevent infections in commercial poultry practices. However, concerns regarding antimicrobial resistance have triggered interest in alternative solutions, such as essential oils (EOs) and seaweed additives. The aim of the current study was to assess the impact of a microencapsulated blend of EOs (cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and thymol) and Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed meal on growth performance, intestinal function, blood biom

Crude chloroform, ethanol and acetone extracts of nineteen seaweed species were screened for their antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Samples showing more than 60% α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, at a concentration of 1 mg/ml, were furthermore investigated using high-resolution α-glucosidase inhibition profiling combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry-solid-phase extraction-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HR-bioassay/HPLC-HRMS-SPE-NMR). The results showed Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesicolosus to be rich in antioxida

BACKGROUND: Microbial and toxin-related challenges are well-documented causes of impaired animal performance. The gastro-intestinal tract is the single largest organ that interfaces with numerous challenges including pathogenic organisms, toxins and other immune activating stimuli. The integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier is the first and most critical line of defence. There are a number of reports demonstrating the potential of naturally derived feed additives to mitigate the damage derived from toxin or infectious agents on cell culture barrier integrity models but little information

Dysglycemia is a disease state preceding the onset of diabetes and includes impaired fasting glycemia and impaired glucose tolerance. This review aimed to collect and analyze the literature reporting the results of clinical trials evaluating the effects of selected nutraceuticals on glycemia in humans. The results of the analyzed trials, generally, showed the positive effects of the nutraceuticals studied alone or in association with other supplements on fasting plasma glucose and post-prandial plasma glucose as primary outcomes, and their efficacy in improving insulin resistance as a secondar

The standard assay for iodoperoxidase activity is based on the spectrophotometric detection of triiodide formed during the enzymatic reaction. However, chemical instability of I3- has limited the method to high iodide concentrations and acidic conditions. Here we describe a simple spectrophotometric assay for the determination of iodoperoxidase activities of vanadium haloperoxidases based on the halogenation of thymol blue. The relation between color and chemical entities produced by the vHPO/H(2)O(2)/I(-) catalytic system was characterized. The method was extended to bromine and, for the firs

This study explores the potential of producing bioethanol from seaweed biomass and reusing the residues as antioxidant compounds. Various types of seaweed, including red (Gelidium amansii, Gloiopeltis furcata, Pyropia tenera), brown (Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Ascophyllum nodosum), and green species (Ulva intestinalis, Ulva prolifera, Codium fragile), were pretreated with dilute acid and enzymes and subsequently processed to produce bioethanol with Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4741. Ethanol production followed the utilization of sugars, resulting in the highest yields from red alg

In this article we report on the steady-state kinetics of the chlorination and the stability of the vanadium chloroperoxidase from the fungus Curvularia inaequalis. The data show that the kinetics of this enzyme resemble that of the vanadium bromoperoxidase from the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum. At low pH, chloride inhibited the enzyme, but the inhibition was of a dual nature. At pH 4.1 a mixed type of inhibition by chloride with respect to hydrogen peroxide was observed whereas at pH 3.1 the nature of the inhibition became competitive. The log Km for hydrogen peroxide decreased linearly with p

Marine sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) are promising candidates for new anticoagulant drug development, necessitating efficient method to evaluate their anticoagulant activity at the molecular level. In this work, a heparin microarray-based competitive strategy was developed to investigate the specific interactions between SPs and antithrombin Ⅲ (AT). The strategy is based on the principle that SPs competitively bind to the active domain of AT, reducing the signal of AT binding to immobilized heparin on microarrays. Validation was performed using established anticoagulants heparin and enoxapari

Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide purified from brown algae, has a variety of immune-modulation effects, such as promoting activation of dendritic cells (DCs), natural killer (NK) cells and T cells, and enhancing anti-viral and anti-tumor responses. However, the immune-modulatory effect of fucoidan from different seaweed extracts has not been thoroughly analyzed and compared. We analyzed fucoidans obtained from Ascophyllum nodosum (A. nodosum), Macrocystis pyrifera (M. pyrifera), Undaria pinnatifida (U. pinnatifida) and Fucus vesiculosus (F. vesiculosus) for their effect on the apoptosis of

This study evaluates the solvent-dependent extraction of Arthrospira platensis and Ascophyllum nodosum to guide sustainable marine biorefinery design. SOXTHERM rapid extractions were performed with n-hexane, ethanol-water (1:1, v/v), and water under controlled severity (3 h, n = 2). Ethanol-water consistently delivered the highest yields for A. platensis (25% DW ± 2.2) and A. nodosum (26% DW ± 2.2), with differences confirmed by a permutation test (p < 0.05). Hexane selectively enriched lipophilic fractions, whereas water favored polar constituents. For A. platensis, ethanol-water exceeded hex

At elevated osmolarity of the mineral medium M63, marine macroalgae constitute important osmoprotectants and nutrients sources for Escherichia coli. Growth of bacterial population (16 strains) was improved by supplementing M63 salts medium with either aqueous or ethanolic algal extracts obtained from Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus, Enteromorpha ramulosa, Ulva lactuca, and Palmaria palmata. In their presence, growth was still observed even at 1.02 M NaCl. Furthermore, the E. coli ZB400 growth in presence of whole macroalgae thalli in M63/0.85 M NaCI reached its maximum within 24 h (5 × 10(

Widespread use of antimicrobial drugs has led to high levels of drug-resistance in pathogen populations and a need for novel sources of anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic compounds. Macroalgae (seaweed) are potentially a rich source of bioactive compounds, and several species have traditionally been used as vermifuges. Here, we investigated the anti-parasitic properties of four common cold-water Nordic seaweeds; Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), Laminaria digitata, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae). Screening of organic extracts against helminths of swine (Asc

Three algae polysaccharides (APs) extracted from Ascophyllum nodosum (ANP), Fucus vesiculosus (FVP) and Undaria Pinnatifida (USP) significantly differed in the zeta potential, water and oil holding capacity, monosaccharide composition, organic element composition, molecular weight distribution, microstructure and rheological properties. Antidiabetic effects of APs were compared by oral intervention at the dose of 400 mg/kg·body weight/day in high sugar and fat diets and streptozotocin injection induced type 2 diabetic rats. The analysis of body weight, water intake, fasting blood glucose, insu
