Usefulness of alanine and aspartate aminotransferases in the diagnosis of microlithiasis in idiopathic acute pancreatitis.

CONCLUSION: Serum increases of aminotransferases, especially alanine aminotransferase (ALT), were suggestive of microlithiasis in idiopathic acute pancreatitis, particularly when assessed early after the onset of abdominal pain. BACKGROUND: It has been shown that biochemical laboratory values only are useful parameters in distinguishing gallstone from nongallstone acute pancreatitis. We assessed the diagnostic usefulness of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) for identification of occult microlithiasis in idiopathic acute pancreatitis. METHODS: Ninety-one pati

Is testing of aspartate aminotransferase necessary along with every alanine aminotransferase for health check in elderly individuals?

OBJECTIVE: This study is to evaluate whether Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) is necessary to screen for liver function in apparently healthy elderly individuals. METHODS: We derived the proportions of elevated ASTs that would not be measured based on 2018-year of paired Chinese elderly (Age ≥ 65 years old) check-up. Defined as AST > 40U/L is elevated. The relationship between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and AST was analyzed by using Pearson's approach. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis was used to evaluate the predictive accuracy of ALT for abnormal AST. RESULTS: 52,857 p

[Serum and tissue aspartate and alanine aminotransferases activity of rats with vitamin A deficiency].

The activity of aspartate-(AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferases was studied in the tissues and blood serum of rats under conditions of A-avitaminosis. The activity of aminotransferases is established to increase in the blood serum and liver. In the small intestine mucose it drops sharply. The activity of ALT in the heart of the A-avitaminous animals lowers as well whereas AST does not change essentially its activity. Short fasting has no effect on the activity of the mentioned enzymes.

Effects of kainic acid injection and cortical lesion on ornithine and aspartate aminotransferases in rat striatum.

The effects of cortical lesions and intrastriatal kainic acid injections on various striatal enzyme activities were investigated. Ornithine aminotransferase decreased concomitantly with glutamate uptake in decorticated and chronic kainic acid-treated rats. It was also decreased in acute kainic acid-lesioned striatum where glutamate uptake was unaffected. Aspartate aminotransferase, however, decreased only after acute kainic acid treatment. Results for glutamate uptake, glutamate decarboxylase, and choline acetyltransferase were in agreement with previous findings. These results suggest that or

Does Aspartate Aminotransferase to Alanine Aminotransferase Ratio Predict Acute Kidney Injury After Cardiac Surgery?

BACKGROUND: Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AST/ALT) frequently is used in the diagnosis and prognosis of liver diseases, however it is also used in the diagnosis and prognosis of many other diseases, such as myocardial infarction, acute ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most important complications after cardiac surgery and is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship between AST to ALT and AKI after isolated coronary artery bypass g

Relation of Aspartate Aminotransferase to Alanine Aminotransferase Ratio to Nutritional Status and Prognosis in Patients With Acute Heart Failure.

Elevated liver fibrosis markers are associated with worse prognosis in acute heart failure (AHF). The aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR) is one such fibrosis marker, and low ALT is a surrogate marker of malnutrition. Here, we evaluated the association between AAR and nutritional status and prognosis in patients with AHF. Consecutive 774 patients who were admitted due to AHF were divided into 3 groups according to AAR at discharge: first tertile, AAR<1.16 (n = 262); second tertile, 1.16≤AAR<1.70 (n = 257); and third tertile, AAR≥1.70 (n = 255). Concurrent Macro-Aspartate Aminotransferase Diagnosis: Pregnant and Elderly Cases.

BACKGROUND: Macro-aspartate aminotransferase (macro-AST), a high-molecular-weight complex formed by AST binding to immunoglobulins or plasma components, causes persistent enzyme elevation due to delayed renal clearance. Its diagnosis remains challenging due to rarity and nonspecific presentation. METHODS: We report two cases of asymptomatic isolated AST elevation: a 25-year-old pregnant woman (AST: 204 - 315 U/L) and an 83-year-old male (AST: 113 - 140 U/L). Both underwent PEG precipitation and refrigeration stability tests to confirm macro-AST. RESULTS: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitati

Effect of chlorpromazine on transmigration of mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase in rat liver.

Cholestatic liver injury was experimentally induced in rats by administration of chlorpromazine (CPZ). The peak activity of mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (AST) released in serum was found to precede the peak of total AST activity. The liver mitochondria obtained from rats treated with CPZ was fractionated into two subfractions: one containing the intermembrane space, and the other containing the matrix and the membranes. As a results, the relative activity of AST in the intermembrane space was significantly increased at 12 h after CPZ administration. This result suggests that mitoch

The proportion of mitochondrial isoenzyme of aspartate aminotransferase is not elevated in Reye's syndrome.

We reexamined a previously reported, highly specific increase in the relative proportion of the mitochondrial isoenzyme of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the serum of patients with Reye's Syndrome. Using ion exchange chromatography, we measured mitochondrial, cytosolic, and total AST in serum samples from (1) 10 patients early in the course of Reye's Syndrome; (2) nine controls with normal serum AST; and (3) seven controls with other diseases causing an increase in serum AST. The mitochondrial percentage (2.8 +/- 2.0%) in Reye's Syndrome was significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than tha

Macro-Aspartate Aminotransferase Elevation in a Patient with Chronic Hepatitis B.

Although aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is a serum marker of hepatocellular damage in chronic hepatitis, it is difficult to interpret very high AST levels with concurrent low alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Macro-AST is an immunoglobulin-AST complex that can present as aberrant high enzymatic activity without significant inflammation in the liver. Two patients with chronic hepatitis B presented with disproportionate AST elevations. Their plasma samples were precipitated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and stored at 4°C for macro-AST determinations. In Case 1, PEG precipitation showed 1

Serum Level of Alanine- and Aspartate-Aminotransferase Levels in Newborns in India.

BACKGROUND: Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ≤40 IU/L is normal. This cutoff, although determined in adults, is widely used for newborns. We studied the reference ranges for ALT and AST in newborns in India. METHODS: We prospectively included babies with gestational age (GA) between 34 and 41weeks and birth weight (BW) ≥ 1500 g. We excluded the babies who either themselves or their mother had risk factors, which could cause elevation of serum levels of liver enzymes. Serum ALT and AST were measured in venous cord blood. The estimated percentile curves
