A case of complex asphyxia sheds light on problems in the classification of asphyxias.

Death from positional asphyxia is often an accidental event occurring when the victim's body assumes a position which can compromise an effective respiration. Its diagnosis is usually not simple, because it needs to know the exact circumstance in which the body was found and the original positioning of all the body segments. In this case, a 41-year-old man with a history of opioid drugs abuse was found dead in a knee-chest position; the head was down on the floor with the face resting on a plastic bag. Pictures of the scene of death was taken while the body was still in its original position.

Asphyxia screening kit.

Infant asphyxia is a condition due to insufficient oxygen intake suffered by newborn babies. A 4 to 9 million occurrences of infant asphyxia are reported each year by WHO. Early diagnosis of asphyxia is important to avoid complications such as damage to the brain, organ and tissue that could lead to fatality. This is possible with the automation of screening of infant asphyxia. Here, a non-invasive Asphyxia Screening Kit is developed. It is a Graphical User Interface that automatically detects asphyxia in infants from early birth to 6 months from their cries and displays the outcome of analysi

Nondrowning Asphyxia in Veterinary Forensic Pathology: Suffocation, Strangulation, and Mechanical Asphyxia.

Asphyxia in a forensic context refers to death by rapid cerebral anoxia or hypoxia due to accidental or nonaccidental injury. Death due to nondrowning asphyxia can occur with strangulation, suffocation, and mechanical asphyxia, each of which is categorized based on the mechanism of injury. Individuals dying due to various types of asphyxia may or may not have lesions, and even those lesions that are present may be due to other causes. The interpretation or opinion that death was due to asphyxia requires definitive and compelling evidence from the postmortem examination, death scene, and/or his

Biochemical profile of term neonates with perinatal asphyxia and their correlation with severity of asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is a major cause of neonatal mortality and neurological morbidity. This study was aimed to determine biochemical (sodium, potassium, and calcium) abnormalities and their correlation across different severities of perinatal asphyxia in term neonates. METHODS: This observational analytical study was conducted in term neonates with perinatal asphyxia admitted at the neonatal intensive care unit of a tertiary care centre for a period of 18 months. Blood collection was done at baseline, 24 hours, and 48 hours of treatment to evaluate electrolyte abnormalities. The abnorm

Is perinatal asphyxia predictable?

BACKGROUND: The objective of our study was to evaluate the association between perinatal asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) with the presence of ante and intrapartum risk factors and/or abnormal fetal heart rate (FHR) findings, in order to improve maternal and neonatal management. METHODS: We did a prospective observational cohort study from a network of four hospitals (one Hub center with neonatal intensive care unit and three level I Spoke centers) between 2014 and 2016. Neonates of gestational age ≥ 35 weeks, birthweight ≥1800 g, without lethal malformations were included i

Pathophysiology of Birth Asphyxia.

The pathophysiology of asphyxia generally results from interruption of placental blood flow with resultant fetal hypoxia, hypercarbia, and acidosis. Circulatory and noncirculatory adaptive mechanisms exist that allow the fetus to cope with asphyxia and preserve vital organ function. With severe and/or prolonged insults, these compensatory mechanisms fail, resulting in hypoxic ischemic injury, leading to cell death via necrosis and apoptosis. Permanent brain injury is the most severe long-term consequence of perinatal asphyxia. The severity and location of injury is influenced by the mechanisms

A traumatic asphyxia in a child.

PURPOSE: Traumatic asphyxia in a child is rare and the pathophysiology is different from that occurring in an adult. We report a case of traumatic asphyxia in a child who recovered without specific treatment, even though chest and abdominal compression was severe. CLINICAL FEATURES: A three-year-old boy (14.2 kg) was run over by the rear wheel of a Jeep. He was under the tire for about three minutes and then was transferred to our hospital. When he arrived, he was lethargic with Glasgow Coma Scale of E3V4M6 (coma score of 13). He was cyanotic in his face and had a tire mark from the left shou

Traumatic asphyxia in children.

Eight children with traumatic asphyxia were evaluated retrospectively. There were five boys and three girls. The mechanism of injuries was motor vehicle accidents in six children. A fall in one patient and compression by lift in one patient. Clinical features of traumatic asphyxia developed in all patients. Five patients were disoriented and consciousness. Associated injuries were noted in all patients often involving thorax and head. Cerebral seizures complicated head injury in one patient. No mortality was recorded.

Sexual asphyxia in siblings.

We present an accidental autoerotic asphyxiation of a 24-year-old man. Further investigation revealed that 18 years earlier, his brother, then 13, had been found dead, hanging in the family bathroom. Although that death had been ruled a suicide, reevaluation of the death scene indicates that this was also an autoerotic asphyxiation. This is the first reported case of sexual asphyxia involving siblings.

Asphyxia and gestational age.

Perinatal asphyxia at term is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. In many instances obstetric or maternal complications during pregnancy, labor, or delivery account for the asphyxia, but there is a group of infants in whom asphyxia occurs without any recognizable risk factors. The histories of 1602 infants were evaluated with these problems in mind. There were 547 infants without any complicating factors, 329 with obstetric complications, and 356 with miscellaneous maternal, fetal, and neonatal problems. The mean gestational age of these infants was 277.4 days. Fetal distress was noted i

[Neonatal asphyxia: neurologic outcome].

AIM: The neonatal asphyxia is recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality during the pediatric age. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between some neonatal variables and neurological outcome at two years of life in infants with asphyxia, in order to produce a correct prognosis and to grant a rapid and targeted therapy. METHODS: We have recruited 63 patients whose history and neuroimages suggested a neonatal asphyxia, and we have analysed their clinical- instrumental parameters every three months until two years of life. A correlation study was carried

Is intrapartum asphyxia preventable?

The contribution of intrapartum events to asphyxia-related mortality and morbidity and the degree to which it may be prevented are controversial. We examined trends in asphyxia-related mortality and morbidity in a single large regional perinatal centre. Between 1994 and 2005, the rate of asphyxia fell from 2.86/1000 births in 1994 to 0.91/1000 births in 2005 (P < 0.001). Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy of all grades fell from 2.41 to 0.77/1000 live births (P < 0.001). This substantial and steady fall in the rate of asphyxia-related mortality and morbidity over a 12-year period suggests that a

Asphyxia by tracheobronchial thrombus.

Asphyxia secondary to airway obstruction has numerous underlying causes, both acute and chronic. Causes of chronic airway obstruction, such as neoplasms and tracheal scarring, are often clinically apparent well prior to asphyxia. Causes of acute airway obstruction may not be as obvious to clinicians or investigators. These include infections, anaphylactic reactions, status asthmaticus, inhalational injuries, and aspirations, which may result in acute obstruction and sudden death. We report the deaths of 2 individuals, a 43-year-old female and a 78-year-old female, both with adenocarcinoma. The

Traumatic asphyxia in children.

Two cases of traumatic asphyxia in young children are reported. The first was a 2 year old child run over at low speed by the front wheels of a delivery van. He made an uncomplicated recovery. The second child was pinned to the floor by an empty chest of drawers in an unwitnessed accident. He was discovered in cardiac arrest and resuscitation was unsuccessful. The outcome following traumatic asphyxia is a product of duration of compression and the weight involved. Considerable weight can be tolerated for a short period, whereas a comparatively modest weight applied for a longer period may resu
