BACKGROUND: The aging population and increasing use of assisted living facilities necessitate a better understanding of risk factors for adverse outcomes. Fever as a long-term risk factor in elderly populations remains understudied.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 16,523 veterans in assisted living facilities between 2012-2022, examining the relationship between fever (defined as temperature ≥100.4°F) and mortality at 90-, 365-, and 730-days post-admission. Subjects were categorized by fever timing (none, at intake, or after intake), temperature severity, and percentage of days febrile.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is increasingly recognized as a vital strategy for enhancing the quality of care in assisted living facility (ALF) settings. By fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals such as nurses, nurses' aides, social workers, physicians, and administrators, IPE promotes a shared and more robust understanding of resident needs and care goals. This opinion article argues that greater integration of IPE and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) into long-term care training programs can significantly improve communication, reduce errors, and enhance

Between February 2009 and November 2011, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) was notified of acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections occurring in residents of four separate assisted living facilities (ALFs) in the Central Health Planning Region of Virginia. In each outbreak, the initial acute HBV infections were identified through routine viral hepatitis surveillance. VDH conducted epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of these reports. Infection control practices, particularly surrounding assisted monitoring of blood glucose (AMBG), were assessed by direct observation and staff mem

Dementia and depression are common neuropsychiatric disorders in older Americans and 40% experience both conditions simultaneously. Yet, interventions addressing both disorders are scarce. Life reviews, systematic recall and evaluation of people's lives, have demonstrated efficacy in depression. We developed the Caregiver-Provided Life Review (C-PLR) and pilot-tested it with people with dementia and depression (PwDD) in communities and assisted living facilities (ALF) and their family caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This mixed-methods study reports on the results of ALF-dwelling dyads

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether the reduced risk of motor adverse effects with second-generation antipsychotics (SGAPs) translates into less use of antiparkinson drugs (APDs).
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to estimate national rates of concomitant prescribing of APDs and antipsychotic drugs among elderly Medicare beneficiaries without Parkinson's disease (PD) who were residing in institutional settings from 1997 to 2000, a period during which the use of SGAPs increased greatly.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive analysis using the Medicare Current Beneficiary

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low retention of direct care workers (DCWs), either certified nursing assistants in nursing homes (NHs) or personal care assistants in assisted living (AL), continues to be an unresolved problem. While numerous studies have examined predictors of DCW retention in NHs, little attention has been paid to differences between settings of long-term care. This study compares the predictors of DCW retention rates across both settings.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The 2017 Ohio Biennial Survey of Long-Term Care Facilities provides facility-level information from NHs and ALs

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission has been reported after patient-to-patient blood exposure during assisted monitoring of blood glucose (AMBG). Three assisted-living facility (ALF) residents who underwent AMBG developed acute HBV infection (HBVI) within 10 days. We investigated HBV transmission and implemented preventive measures.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Infection control practices were assessed. HBVI screening was conducted for all staff and epidemiologically linked residents. Viral DNA sequences were compared for a subset of isolates.
RESULTS: La

On May 28, 2012, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) was notified of six cases of severe respiratory illness among 12 residents of an assisted-living facility (ALF) specializing in the care of elderly persons with dementia or memory loss. During May 22-27, 2012, five residents were hospitalized, and two developed invasive disease with Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal) bacteremia. S. pneumoniae is spread by airborne droplets and causes an estimated 175,000 hospitalizations and 50,000 cases of pneumococcal bacteremia each year. The case-fatality rate of pneumoc

We investigated a multifacility outbreak of acute hepatitis B virus infection involving 21 residents across 10 assisted living facilities in Texas during the period January 2008 through July 2010. Epidemiologic and laboratory data suggested that these infections belonged to a single outbreak. The only common exposure was receipt of assisted monitoring of blood glucose from the same home health care agency. Improved infection control oversight and training of assisted living facility and home health care agency personnel providing assisted monitoring of blood glucose is needed.

BACKGROUND: Use of inappropriate drugs is common among institutionalized older people. Rigorous trials investigating the effect of the education of staff in institutionalized settings on the harm related to older people's drug treatment are still scarce. The aim of this trial is to investigate whether training professionals in assisted living facilities reduces the use of inappropriate drugs among residents and has an effect on residents' quality of life and use of health services.
METHODS AND DESIGN: During years 2011 and 2012, a sample of residents in assisted living facilities in Helsinki

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An increasing number of older adults are seeking behavioral voice therapy to manage their voice problems. Poor adherence to voice therapy is a known problem across all treatment-seeking populations. Given age-related physical and cognitive impairments and multiple chronic conditions, older adults are more susceptible to low adherence to behavioral therapies. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of an at-home, vocal training intervention for older adults without a known voice disorder living in a senior living community, as well as compare the effects of
