Is there an association between functional vision and learning to read?

Background: Controversy exists about the role of visual parameters and vision in learning to read. This study aims to determine whether ocular parameters or performance on a dynamic test of visual function differs for children of differing reading ability. Methods: Two hundred and eighty-four children (mean age 9.9 +/- 1.8 years) received a vision screening emphasising binocular anomalies associated with discomfort at near (distance and near visual acuity, distance vision challenged with binocular +1 D lenses, near heterophoria, near point of convergence, stereopsis and accommodative facility)

Association between nystagmus hyporesponsivity and behavioral problems in learning-disabled children.

This study explored the hypothesis that an association exists between postrotary nystagmus hyporesponsivity and behavioral problems in learning-disabled children. Supporting this conclusion was the finding that the learning-disabled boys rated by teachers as displaying the most socially inappropriate behaviors had significantly lower postrotary nystagmus durations than other learning-disabled boys. In addition, near significant associations were obtained between subnormal nystagmus functioning and socially inappropriate responding for boys and girls combined. Learning-disabled girls were evalu

DD-HGNN$^+$: Drug-Disease Association Prediction via General Hypergraph Neural Network With Hierarchical Contrastive Learning and Cross Attention Learning.

The research on identifying drug-disease associations (DDAs) is widely used in scenarios such as drug development, clinical decision-making, and drug repurposing, holding significant biological and medical significance. Existing methods for drug-disease association prediction have achieved decent performance, they primarily rely on simplistic drug-disease association graphs or similarity graphs. These methods often struggle to capture the high-order correlations of complex multimodal data, limiting their ability to handle the complexity of data associations effectively. In addition, real drug-

Stress, associative learning, and decision-making.

Exposure to acute and chronic stress has significant effects on the basic mechanisms of associative learning and memory. Stress can both impair and enhance associative learning depending on type, intensity, and persistence of the stressor, the subject's sex, the context that the stress and behavior is experienced in, and the type of associative learning taking place. In some cases, stress can cause or exacerbate the maladaptive behavior that underlies numerous psychiatric conditions including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disord

Associative learning, the hippocampus, and nicotine addiction.

The abuse liability of nicotine is comparable to or greater than that of a variety of addictive substances. However, the reinforcing and/or rewarding properties of addictive substances other than nicotine far outweigh the reinforcing and/or rewarding effects associated with nicotine use. These data suggest that, in addition to the intrinsic reinforcing effects of nicotine, other factors may contribute to nicotine addiction. One such factor is associative learning, or rather, the ability of nicotine to alter learning and memory processes that may underlie addiction. The present paper presents a

Investigating learning deficits associated with dyslexia.

An artificial grammar learning task was used to define two learning tasks of identical complexity at the symbolic level, but which differed in terms of stimulus format. The stimuli in one learning task were created so as to encourage participants to perceive each stimulus as a whole, with less emphasis on the stimulus constituent elements (the 'embedded' stimuli), while in the second task the constituent elements of each stimulus were emphasized by presenting them serially (the 'sequences' stimuli). Using a between participants design, dyslexic participants performed equally well in the two ve

MiRNA-Disease Association Prediction Using Game Optimization and Multi-view Representation Learning.

MiRNAs influence cellular functions by regulating gene expression and interacting with diverse biomolecules within the cell. Accurate prediction of miRNA disease associations (MDA) plays a crucial role in dis ease diagnosis, treatment, and drug development. However, most computational methods focus on graph information and ignore other information when extracting miRNA and disease features. Therefore, we propose a computational method based on game optimization and multi view representation learning (GMIMDA) for predicting MDA. Specifically, GMIMDA first integrates multi-source similarity view

Topology-aware relational learning on heterogeneous networks for lncRNA-disease association prediction.

OBJECTIVE: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an irreplaceable role in critical physiological processes such as cell cycle regulation, chromatin remodeling, and tumor suppression, yet traditional wet-lab molecular experiments are expensive and time-consuming. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop efficient computational prediction models to prioritize disease-related lncRNAs, aiming to discover potential associations and reveal their underlying biological mechanisms. METHODS: A novel computational architecture named TARLHN is proposed. First, a hierarchical path attention encoder

Impaired executive functioning mediates the association between aging and deterministic sequence learning.

Sensitivity to the fixed ordering of actions and events, or deterministic sequence learning, is an important skill throughout adulthood. Yet, it remains unclear whether age deficits in sequencing exist, and we lack a firm understanding of which factors might contribute to age-related impairments when they arise. Though debated, executive functioning, governed by the frontal lobe, may underlie age-related sequence learning deficits in older adults. The present study asked if age predicts errors in deterministic sequence learning across the older adult lifespan (ages 55-89), and whether executiv

Explaining the Genetic Causality for Complex Phenotype via Deep Association Kernel Learning.

The genetic effect explains the causality from genetic mutations to the development of complex diseases. Existing genome-wide association study (GWAS) approaches are always built under a linear assumption, restricting their generalization in dissecting complicated causality such as the recessive genetic effect. Therefore, a sophisticated and general GWAS model that can work with different types of genetic effects is highly desired. Here, we introduce a deep association kernel learning (DAK) model to enable automatic causal genotype encoding for GWAS at pathway level. DAK can detect both common

Quantifying the Association Between Psychotherapy Content and Clinical Outcomes Using Deep Learning.

IMPORTANCE: Compared with the treatment of physical conditions, the quality of care of mental health disorders remains poor and the rate of improvement in treatment is slow, a primary reason being the lack of objective and systematic methods for measuring the delivery of psychotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To use a deep learning model applied to a large-scale clinical data set of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) session transcripts to generate a quantifiable measure of treatment delivered and to determine the association between the quantity of each aspect of therapy delivered and clinical outcomes.

Long-horizon associative learning as a unifying framework for statistical learning across scales.

Sensory inputs are rich with temporal patterns that unfold across multiple timescales. Uncovering these regularities is essential for anticipating future events and navigating the environment efficiently. Numerous models have been proposed to account for learning at specific temporal scales; however, they are often designed in isolation and rely on narrowly tuned statistical measures, limiting their generalizability to other paradigms. In contrast, humans typically learn without prior knowledge of the underlying structure or the relevant timescale at which regularities occur. Here, we present

Ageing is associated with disrupted reinforcement learning whilst learning to help others is preserved.

Reinforcement learning is a fundamental mechanism displayed by many species. However, adaptive behaviour depends not only on learning about actions and outcomes that affect ourselves, but also those that affect others. Using computational reinforcement learning models, we tested whether young (age 18-36) and older (age 60-80, total n = 152) adults learn to gain rewards for themselves, another person (prosocial), or neither individual (control). Detailed model comparison showed that a model with separate learning rates for each recipient best explained behaviour. Young adults learned faster whe

Foreign language learning difficulties in Italian children: are they associated with other learning difficulties?

A group of seventh- and eighth-grade Italian students with low achievement (LA) in learning English as a foreign language (FL) was selected and compared to a group with high achievement (HA) in FL learning. The two groups were matched for age and nonverbal intelligence. Two experiments were conducted to examine the participants' verbal and nonverbal learning skills, such as native language reading accuracy, speed and comprehension, calculation, and attention and self-regulation. Both experiments showed that the LA group seemed at risk for reading comprehension difficulties, but its reading spe

Objective prediction of siesta based on machine learning and association with obesity.

OBJECTIVES: To predict siesta behavior using machine learning models trained on self-reported and objective data-temperature (T), activity (A), position (P), and the integrated TAP variable-and to explore its associations with obesity-related traits. METHODS: From ONTIME-MT, 889 adults wore wrist sensors for 7 days to continuously record temperature, activity, and position, and self-reported daily siesta. Machine learning models were developed to classify 30-second epoch siesta data, to reconstruct weekly siesta behavior. Anthropometric and metabolic parameters were assessed. Associations wer

Discovering HIV related information by means of association rules and machine learning.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is still one of the main health problems worldwide. It is therefore essential to keep making progress in improving the prognosis and quality of life of affected patients. One way to advance along this pathway is to uncover connections between other disorders associated with HIV/AIDS-so that they can be anticipated and possibly mitigated. We propose to achieve this by using Association Rules (ARs). They allow us to represent the dependencies between a number of diseases and other specific diseases. However, classical techniques systematically generate e

Association of abnormal cerebellar activation with motor learning difficulties in dyslexic adults.

BACKGROUND: In addition to their impairments in literacy-related skills, dyslexic children show characteristic difficulties in phonological skill, motor skill, and balance. There is behavioural and biochemical evidence that these difficulties may be attributable to mild cerebellar dysfunction. We wanted to find out whether there was abnormal brain activation when dyslexic adults undertook tasks known normally to involve cerebellar activation. METHODS: Brain activation was monitored by positron emission tomography in matched groups of six dyslexic adults and six control adults as they carried
