EVALUATION OF THE ACUTE AND SUBCHRONIC TOXICITY OF Aster tataricus L. F.

BACKGROUND: Aster tataricus L. f. is used as a traditional Chinese drug to relieve cough and asthma symptoms and to eliminate phlegm. However, Aster tataricus L. f. possesses toxicity, and little systematic research has been conducted on its toxic effects in the laboratory. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The acute group was administered 75% alcohol extract of Aster tataricus L. f. in a single dose. A subchronic toxicity study was performed via daily oral administration of Aster tataricus L. f. at a dose of 0.34 g/kg body weight in SD rats. The rats were divided into six groups: a petroleum ether extr

Accumulation of Cr, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn by plants in tanning sludge storage sites: opportunities for contamination bioindication and phytoremediation.

Tanning sludge enriched with high concentrations of Cr and other metals has adverse effects on the environment. Plants growing in the metalliferous soils may have the ability to cope with high metal concentrations. This study focuses on potentials of using native plants for bioindication and/or phytoremediation of Cr-contaminated sites. In the study, we characterized plants and soils from six tanning sludge storage sites. Soil in these sites exhibited toxic levels of Cr (averaged 16,492 mg kg-1) and other metals (e.g., 48.3 mg Cu kg-1, 2370 mg Zn kg-1, 44.9 mg Pb kg-1, and 0.59 mg Cd kg-1). Di

Disentangling the photochemical salinity tolerance in Aster tripolium L.: connecting biophysical traits with changes in fatty acid composition.

A profound analysis of A. tripolium photochemical traits under salinity exposure is lacking in the literature, with very few references focusing on its fatty acid profile role in photophysiology. To address this, the deep photochemical processes were evaluated by Pulse Amplitude Modulated (PAM) Fluorometry coupled with a discrimination of its leaf fatty acid profile. Plants exposed to 125-250 mm NaCl showed higher photochemical light harvesting efficiencies and lower energy dissipation rates. under higher NaCl exposure, there is evident damage of the oxygen evolving complexes (OECs). Host filtering overrides simulated climate change: plant species identity shapes phyllosphere fungal communities and putative pathogen proportions in an alpine meadow.

UNLABELLED: Phyllosphere fungal communities play critical ecological roles in plant fitness and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the influences of multifactorial climate change on foliar mycobiomes across distinct plant functional groups remain poorly understood. To elucidate this, we used an 11-year field manipulation experiment to assess the impacts of simulated warming (+2.0°C) and altered precipitation (-50%, ambient, and +50%) on foliar fungal α-diversity, β-diversity, and functional guilds across four co-occurring alpine host plants: a forb (Aster diplostephioides), a

Aster tataricus attenuates asthma efficiently by simultaneously inhibiting tracheal ring contraction and inflammation.

Asthma is an airway chronic inflammatory disease with significant morbidity, mortality and huge social economic burden. Previous research demonstrated that the root of Aster tataricus (RA) may have the potential to treat asthma, but the efficacy and mechanism were not clear. In this study, preliminary results in vitro showed that Fr-75 eluted from RA extract could not only completely inhibit the tracheal ring contraction raised by KCl in 20 min, but also effectively affect the tracheal ring contraction induced by KCl-, Ach- and His in a concentration-dependent manner (3.91-250 μg/mL). In Vivo Anti-Inflammation Potential of Aster koraiensis Extract for Dry Eye Syndrome by the Protection of Ocular Surface.

Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a corneal disease often characterized by an irritating, itching feeling in the eyes and light sensitivity. Inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of DES, although the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Aster koraiensis has been used traditionally as an edible herb in Korea. It has been reported to have wound-healing and inhibitory effects against insulin resistance and inflammation. Here, we examined the inhibitory effects of inflammation and ER stress by A. koraiensis extract (AKE) in animal model and human r

Aster spathulifolius Maxim extract reduces body weight and fat mass in obese humans.

Aster spathulifolius Maxim (AS), a perennial herb of the genus Aster within the family Asteraceae, induced weight loss in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. We hypothesized that AS could also reduce body weight in obese humans. Therefore, we performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in Korea to evaluate the effect of AS extract (ASE) on body weight and fat mass and its safety in obese humans. Forty-four obese participants (body mass index [BMI], 25-30 kg/m(2)) aged ≥20 years were randomly assigned to the placebo or ASE group (700 mg/d of ASE) and were instructed

2E-Decene-4,6-diyn-1-ol-acetate inhibits osteoclastogenesis through mitogen-activated protein kinase-c-Fos-NFATc1 signalling pathways.

An imbalance of osteoclasts and osteoblasts can result in a variety of bone-related diseases, including osteoporosis. Thus, decreasing the activity of osteoclastic bone resorption is the main therapeutic method for treating osteoporosis. 2E-Decene-4, 6-diyn-1-ol-acetate (DDA) is a natural bioactive compound with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. However, its effects on osteoclastogenesis are unknown. Murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) or RAW264.7 cells were treated with DDA, followed by evaluation of cell viability, RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation, and pit forma

Comparative chloroplast genomics of Ajania sericea and sympatric Asteraceae species identifies shared candidate molecular features associated with alpine adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Ajania sericea is endemic to the Dali region of Yunnan and is currently the southernmost known member of the genus Ajania worldwide. It co-occurs with Aster brachytrichus, Anaphalis pannosa, and Leontopodium dedekensii in alpine habitats of northwestern Yunnan, where plants are exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation, low temperatures, strong winds, and drought. To explore whether sympatric Asteraceae species from different lineages share chloroplast genomic features associated with alpine response, we sequenced, assembled, and compared the chloroplast genomes of these four species

Phytochemicals as Chemo-Preventive Agents and Signaling Molecule Modulators: Current Role in Cancer Therapeutics and Inflammation.

Cancer is one of the deadliest non communicable diseases. Numerous anticancer medications have been developed to target the molecular pathways driving cancer. However, there has been no discernible increase in the overall survival rate in cancer patients. Therefore, innovative chemo-preventive techniques and agents are required to supplement standard cancer treatments and boost their efficacy. Fruits and vegetables should be tapped into as a source of compounds that can serve as cancer therapy. Phytochemicals play an important role as sources of new medication in cancer treatment.
