First record of atypical pigmentation pattern in fin whale Balaenoptera physalus in the Atlantic Ocean.

Atypical pigmentation, which is rarely observed in the wild, may influence social interactions between animals and can be detrimental for survival. Hypopigmentation, which is the lack of pigment in a part or on the entire body, is a type of atypical pigmentation pattern that can be either acquired (e.g. vitiligo) or congenital resulting from the inheritance of mutations in pigment-related genes (e.g. albinism, leucism and piebaldism). This study documents atypical pigmentation in a fin whale Balaenoptera physalus off the northwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula (Atlantic Ocean). Photographi

Killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles from the western South Atlantic Ocean include high frequency signals.

Acoustic parameters of killer whale (Orcinus orca) whistles were described for the western South Atlantic Ocean and highlight the occurrence of high frequency whistles. Killer whale signals were recorded on December of 2012, when a pod of four individuals was observed harassing a group of sperm whales. The high frequency whistles were highly stereotyped and were modulated mostly at ultrasonic frequencies. Compared to other contour types, the high frequency whistles are characterized by higher bandwidths, shorter durations, fewer harmonics, and higher sweep rates. The results add to the knowled

Possible transport pathway of diazotrophic Trichodesmium by Agulhas Leakage from the Indian into the Atlantic Ocean.

Diazotrophic cyanobacteria such as Trichodesmium play a crucial role in the nitrogen budget of the oceans due to their capability to bind atmospheric nitrogen. Little is known about their interoceanic transport pathways and their distribution in upwelling regions. Trichodesmium has been detected using a Video Plankton Recorder (VPR) mounted on a remotely operated towed vehicle (TRIAXUS) in the southern and northern Benguela Upwelling System (BUS) in austral autumn, Feb/Mar 2019. The TRIAXUS, equipped with a CTD as well as fluorescence and nitrogen sensors, was towed at a speed of 8 kn on two o

Reflections on Charlie Gard and the Best Interests Standard From Both Sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Charlie Gard (August 4, 2016, to July 28, 2017) was an infant in the United Kingdom who was diagnosed with an encephalopathic form of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome caused by a mutation in the RRM2B gene. Charlie's parents raised £1.3 million (∼$1.6 million US) on a crowdfunding platform to travel to New York to pursue experimental nucleoside bypass treatment, which was being used to treat a myopathic form of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome caused by mutations in a different gene (TK2). The case made international headlines about what was in Charlie's best interest. In the medical e

Stable isotope tempestology of tropical cyclones across the North Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Ocean basins.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the major natural hazards to island and coastal communities and ecosystems. However, isotopic compositions of TC-derived precipitation (P) in surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) reservoirs are still lacking. We tested the three main assumptions of the isotope storm "spike" hypothesis (sudden spikes in isotopic ratios). Our database covers 40 TCs and is divided into recent (N = 778; 2012-2023) and archived (N = 236; 1984-1995) rainfall isotope observations and SW/GW isotope monitoring (N = 6013; 2014-2023). Seasonal rainfall contribution from TCs ranged fr

Polyunsaturated aldehydes from large phytoplankton of the Atlantic Ocean surface (42°n to 33°s).

Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) are organic compounds mainly produced by diatoms, after cell wounding. These compounds are increasingly reported as teratogenic for species of grazers and deleterious for phytoplanktonic species, but there is still scarce information regarding concentration ranges and the composition of PUAs in the open ocean. In this study, we analyzed the spatial distribution and the type of aldehydes produced by the large-sized (>10 μm) phytoplankton in the Atlantic Ocean surface. Analyses were conducted on PUAs released after mechanical disruption of the phytoplankton cells

Atlantic bluefin tuna tagged off Norway show extensive annual migrations, high site-fidelity and dynamic behaviour in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) is a highly migratory species. To investigate the migrations and vertical behaviours of ABFT migrating to Nordic waters, we deployed pop-up satellite archival transmitting tags on 25 ABFT off Norway (curved fork length: 228-292 cm). We obtained 16 full-year migrations, which differed between individuals, and physically recovered 13 tags, which provided 4699 days of archival depth and temperature data. ABFT occupied waters from the Arctic Circle to as far south as Cabo Verde, Africa, and occupied depths down to 1190 m and temperatures from 0.5 to 27

Brominated flame retardants and organochlorine contaminants in winter flounder, harp and hooded seals, and North Atlantic right whales from the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Various brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and current-use, non-PBDE BFRs, as well as organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were measured in winter flounder, harp and hooded seals, and North Atlantic right whales from the Eastern United States and Canada. The concentrations of PBDEs in winter flounder and right whales were similar in magnitude to the levels of PCBs, which was unlike the pattern observed in seals. In these marine mammals, the levels of PBDEs were orders of magnitude lower than the levels of OCs and

The role of pelagic swarm fish (Myctophidae: Teleostei) in the oceanic life cycle of Anisakis sibling species at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Central Atlantic.

First information is provided on the parasitation and feeding ecology of the myctophid fish species Myctophum punctatum and Notoscopelus kroyeri from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), Central Atlantic. Four different parasite species were found in both fish with a similar high prevalence and intensity of infestation. The digeneans Gonocerca phycidis and Lethadena sp. were isolated as adults from the stomach, larval tetraphyllidean cestodes (Scolex pleuronectis) from the intestine, and genetically identified larval anisakid nematodes of Anisakis simplex (s.s.) from the body cavity. Coupled Atlantic atmosphere-ocean variability modulates cutaneous leishmaniasis in North Africa, enabling long-lead seasonal forecasts.

Early warning systems for climate-driven diseases require predictors with sufficient lead time, a persistent challenge for many diseases and regions. While coupled atmosphere-ocean phenomena offer a potential solution, they remain largely underexploited in temperate zones. Here, we establish a multiscale connection between cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) dynamics in North Africa, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV). Beyond the NAO's influence on seasonal rainfall, we uncover low-frequency variability in the NAO-AMV system that modulates interannua

Evidence for Borrelia bavariensis Infections of Ixodes uriae within Seabird Colonies of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The first report of members of the spirochete genus Borrelia in the seabird tick, Ixodes uriae, and seabird colonies occurred during the early 1990s. Since then, Borrelia spp. have been detected in these ticks and seabird colonies around the world. To date, the primary species detected has been Borrelia garinii, with rare occurrences of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia lusitaniae. During our research on Borrelia and I. uriae in seabird colonies of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, we have identified Borrelia bavariensis in I. uriae To our knowledge, B. bavariensis has previousl

Morphological and taxonomic revision of species of Squatina from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (Chondrichthyes: Squatiniformes: Squatinidae).

The morphology and taxonomy of species of Squatina from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean are revised. Species previously considered valid, Squatina argentina (Marini, 1930), Squatina guggenheim Marini, 1936 and Squatina occulta Vooren and da Silva, 1991, are investigated and described in detail, including a morphometric and meristic study of specimens from their recorded range. The taxonomic status of the doubtful nominal species Squatina punctata Marini, 1936 was also evaluated. This species was previously considered a junior synonym of S. argentina, a junior synonym of S. guggenheim, or a sen

The effect of Mauritanian and Benguela upwelling waters on micronekton (Decapoda, Euphausiacea, and Lophogastrida) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean.

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems play a crucial role in marine productivity, supporting rich biodiversity and sustaining significant global fisheries. These dynamic regions are characterized by nutrient-rich waters that fuel complex food webs, making them vital for ecosystem functioning and fisheries management. Understanding the composition and distribution of key zooplankton groups, such as pelagic crustaceans, is essential for assessing ecosystem dynamics, particularly in the context of climate variability. In this study, we describe the community composition of pelagic crustaceans in the

Larval cestodes infecting the deep-water fish, Cataetyx laticeps (Pisces: Bythitidae) from Madeira Archipelago, Atlantic Ocean.

Parasites of deep-water fishes are less known in comparison to the parasites of fishes living in the demersal and epipelagic ocean zones. In the present research note we report the occurrence of larval trypanorhynch cestodes in a rare deep-water fish, the deep-water brotula, Cataetyx laticeps. Based on the 28S rDNA (region D1-D3) sequence homology and the phylogenetic analysis, the larval cestodes are putatively assigned to the genus Grillotia. It is suggested that the definitive host of this trypanorhynch is a batoid.

The plastisphere: a comprehensive description of geographic and temporal community patterns across the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Plastic pollution is a global ecological threat, not only as physical debris but also as a novel substrate hosting microbial communities, known as "plastisphere". Polymer type (virgin vs. recycled), combined with environmental variations, may influence both early and mature colonization stages. While biogeography has been identified as a key driver of the plastisphere community structure, prior research often relied on isolated studies with no methodological standardization or on opportunistic sampling. Here, this study stands out by conducting a simultaneous and harmonized investigation acros

Properties of inflowing Pacific and Atlantic water govern total and methylated mercury profiles in the Arctic Ocean.

High methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in Arctic marine biota have been linked to high MeHg uptake driven by shallow MeHg peaks at water depths of 100-300 m in the Arctic Ocean. To understand how the biogeochemical characteristics of each basin affects the distribution of total Hg (THg) and MeHg across the Arctic Ocean, the spatial patterns of THg and MeHg were investigated using data from new transects in the Beaufort Sea (BS) and previously published Arctic Ocean expeditions covering the Canada Basin and Makarov Basin in the Pacific sector, and Amundsen Basin and Nansen Basin in the Atlant

On-board study of gas embolism in marine turtles caught in bottom trawl fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean.

Decompression sickness (DCS) was first diagnosed in marine turtles in 2014. After capture in net fisheries, animals typically start showing clinical evidence of DCS hours after being hauled on-board, often dying if untreated. These turtles are normally immediately released without any understanding of subsequent clinical problems or outcome. The objectives of this study were to describe early occurrence and severity of gaseous embolism (GE) and DCS in marine turtles after incidental capture in trawl gear, and to provide estimates of on-board and post-release mortality. Twenty-eight marine turt

Mercury in the atmosphere, snow and melt water ponds in the North Atlantic Ocean during Arctic summer.

Atmospheric mercury speciation measurements were performed during a 10 week Arctic summer expedition in the North Atlantic Ocean onboard the German research vessel RV Polarstern between June 15 and August 29, 2004. This expedition covered large areas of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans between latitudes 54 degrees N and 85 degrees N and longitudes 16 degrees W and 16 degrees E. Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and mercury associated with particles (Hg-P) were measured during this study. In addition, total mercury in surface snow and meltwater ponds located on
