Determination of hexabromocyclododecane by flowing atmospheric pressure afterglow mass spectrometry.

The first application of a flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow ion source for mass spectrometry (FAPA-MS) for the chemical characterization and determination of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is presented. The samples of technical HBCD and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) containing HBCD as a flame retardant were prepared by dissolving the appropriate solids in dichloromethane. The ionization of HBCD was achieved with a prototype FAPA source. The ions were detected in the negative-ion mode. The ions corresponding to a deprotonated HBCD species (m/z 640.7) as well as chlorine (m/z 676.8), nitr

Laser-induced acoustic desorption/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

Laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) was successfully coupled to a conventional atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source in a commercial linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer (LQIT). Model compounds representing a wide variety of different types, including basic nitrogen and oxygen compounds, aromatic and aliphatic compounds, as well as unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons, were tested separately and as a mixture. These model compounds were successfully evaporated into the gas phase by using LIAD and then ionized by using APCI with different reagents. From the four A

Decomposition of N-hydroxylated compounds during atmospheric pressure chemical ionization.

N-Hydroxylated polyamine derivatives were found to decompose during the ionization process of liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS) experiments. The phenomenon was studied with a model compound, a synthetic N-hydroxylated tetraamine derivative. It was found that reduction, oxidation and water elimination occurred during APCI to generate the corresponding amine, N-oxide, and imine. The investigation further revealed that decomposition of hydroxylamines during APCI depends upon the concentration of the analyte and on the acidity of the solu

Dysbarism: the medical problems from high and low atmospheric pressure.

The most serious problems resulting from a change in ambient pressure are pulmonary barotrauma with air embolism and decompression sickness. The small differential pressures used in ventilators at atmospheric pressure may tear lung tissue and, in diving, deaths have occurred from the expansion of pulmonary gas on an ascent of less than two metres. The bubbles of respired gas that enter the systemic circulation often occlude cerebral arteries and may cause infarction. In decompression sickness, bubbles form in the tissues from supersaturation of the nitrogen or helium absorbed under pressure. J

Atmospheric pressure influences the risk of pneumothorax: beware of the storm!

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic spontaneous pneumothorax (ISP) results from rupture of blebs, bullas, or diseased alveolar walls. Initiating mechanisms may relate to increased transpulmonary pressure. The possible impact of changes in atmospheric pressure (Patm) on the occurrence of ISP remains uncertain. METHODS: We studied the relationship between the occurrence of ISP and meteorological conditions during a 4-year period in the urban area of Bologna, Italy, in which all cases of pneumothorax can be exhaustively identified. For each day of the study period, Patm and ambient temperature were obtained

Transmission of change in the atmospheric pressure of the external ear to the perilymph.

In experiments using guinea pigs, the middle ear and perilymphatic pressures were simultaneously registered in response to pressure change in the external ear canal. In the first experiment, pressure was slowly loaded in the ear canal in the range of 200 mm H2O to -200 mm H2O. Pressure transmission to the perilymph was smaller when the bulla was open to the outside than when it was closed. It was significantly impaired by disruption of the ossicular chain and especially by closure of the round window. The data indicate that air volume in the middle ear cavity plays an important role in transmi

The major influence of the atmosphere on intracranial pressure: an observational study.

The impact of the atmosphere on human physiology has been studied widely within the last years. In practice, intracranial pressure is a pressure difference between intracranial compartments and the surrounding atmosphere. This means that gauge intracranial pressure uses atmospheric pressure as its zero point, and therefore, this method of pressure measurement excludes the effects of barometric pressure's fluctuation. The comparison of these two physical quantities can only take place through their absolute value relationship. The aim of this study is to investigate the direct effect of baromet

Atmospheric oxygenation caused by a change in volcanic degassing pressure.

The Precambrian history of our planet is marked by two major events: a pulse of continental crust formation at the end of the Archaean eon and a weak oxygenation of the atmosphere (the Great Oxidation Event) that followed, at 2.45 billion years ago. This oxygenation has been linked to the emergence of oxygenic cyanobacteria and to changes in the compositions of volcanic gases, but not to the composition of erupting lavas--geochemical constraints indicate that the oxidation state of basalts and their mantle sources has remained constant since 3.5 billion years ago. Here we propose that a decrea

Effect of atmospheric pressure on hearing in patients with Menière's disease.

Hearing in patients with Menière's disease improved when they were treated in an underpressure chamber. In this study 46 patients with neurotological diseases, including 32 cases of Menière's disease, were tested in an overpressure chamber. As a result, hearing in 32% of the patients with Menière's disease improved, although this was lower than the 50% rate of improvement in Menière's disease patients tested in an underpressure chamber.

Anterior Chamber Air Bubble Dynamics With Decreases in Atmospheric Pressure.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of decreasing barometric pressure on intracameral bubble size and intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes with varying air fills in the anterior chamber. METHODS: A total of 36 human donor eyes received 30%, 50%, or 90% anterior chamber air fill. The eyes were subjected to decreases in atmospheric pressure down to 750 hPa, equal to 2400 m in altitude, and were repeatedly imaged using anterior segment optical coherence tomography while IOP was measured continuously. RESULTS: Eyes with 30% air fill initially showed moderate increases in IOP yet rising to an average o

Pathological consequences of low atmospheric pressure stunning in broiler chickens.

Low atmospheric pressure stunning (LAPS) is a novel approach to pre-slaughter stunning of chickens using progressive hypobaric hypoxia by the application of gradual decompression (280s cycle) according to a set of prescribed pressure curves. Low atmospheric pressure stunning produces a non-recovery state. Concerns have been raised relating to the possible pathological and welfare consequences of expansion of air in the body during LAPS. In a randomised trial, we compared the gross pathology of broilers exposed to LAPS with a control group euthanised by intravenous injection of pentobarbital so

Influence of atmospheric pressure on infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture.

BACKGROUND: Meteorologic conditions have a significant impact on the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Previous studies have shown that abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture (AAAR) may be associated with atmospheric pressure, with conflicting results. Therefore, we aimed to further investigate the nature of the correlation between atmospheric pressure variations and AAAR. METHOD: Hospital admissions related to AAAR between 2005-2009 were assessed in 19 districts of metropolitan France and correlated with geographically and date-matched mean atmospheric pressures. In parallel and from 2005-2009

Pressure-volume relationships above and below atmospheric pressure in the synovial cavity of the rabbit knee.

1. The pressure-volume relationship in the synovial cavity of the rabbit knee was investigated by the infusion of a non-absorbable oil into the cavity. 2. The pressure (P)-volume (V) curve was sigmoid. Its slope dP/dV (elastance) was steep at subatmospheric, physiological pressures, least steep at 5 cm H2O, and steepened progressively at higher, pathological pressures. 3. Elastance dP/dV was a good approximation to linear functions of P below atmospheric pressure and above 5 cm H2O. Each part of the pressure-volume relationship could therefore be described by an exponential expression. 4. Flex

Health effects of atmospheric pressure fluctuations: a review of biometeorological research.

Atmospheric pressure (AP) is a meteorological factor that constantly affects all living organisms on Earth, and the effects of AP generally could not be eliminated. The magnitude of AP and its variability depend on the altitude, season, weather conditions, time of day, and the gravitational potential of the Moon and the Sun. AP effect on the body can be both direct mechanical and through modulation of the partial oxygen density. Significant changes in AP can cause serious health problems such as acute mountain sickness, decompression sickness, and barotrauma. However, even slight fluctuations

Disinfection of ocular cells and tissues by atmospheric-pressure cold plasma.

BACKGROUND: Low temperature plasmas have been proposed in medicine as agents for tissue disinfection and have received increasing attention due to the frequency of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This study explored whether atmospheric-pressure cold plasma (APCP) generated by a new portable device that ionizes a flow of helium gas can inactivate ocular pathogens without causing significant tissue damage. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We tested the APCP effects on cultured Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Herpes

Do weather-related ambient atmospheric-pressure changes influence sleep disordered breathing?

OBJECTIVE: High-altitude studies of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) show increases in apnea hypopnea indices with elevation gains. Hypoxic changes, rather than reductions in atmospheric pressure (AP), are thought to be the driving factor. Ambient pressure-related changes in SDB have not been extensively studied at low altitude. We performed a cross-sectional study of weather-related AP effects on measures of SDB at the University of WashingtonMedicine Sleep Institute, a Seattle, Washington-based polysomnography lab located 200 feet above sea level. METHOD: Obstructive, central, and apnea-hyp

Speciation analysis of fungi by liquid atmospheric pressure MALDI mass spectrometry.

Fungal pathogens pose a growing threat to global health, necessitating rapid and accurate identification methods. Here, liquid atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation (LAP-MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) is applied to fast lipid and protein profiling of Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae from cultured colonies. Species-specific lipid profiles were observed in the m/z 600-1100 range, dominated by phospholipids as confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Following simple solid phase extraction clean-up, LAP-MALDI mass spectra revealed multiply charged prot

Propagation of antibacterial cold atmospheric pressure plasma through small-bore tubing.

Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) is well documented to have microbicidal properties including against non-pathogenic Escherichia coli. In this feasibility study, a semi-quantitative method was developed to measure bactericidal activity of argon-CAPP (Ar-CAPP). Ar-CAPP susceptibility then was tested for a variety of clinically relevant E. coli strains, both uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) and strains resistant to multiple antibiotics. All strains tested were found similarly susceptible to the antibacterial effects of Ar-CAPP. Next, methods were developed to propagate Ar-CAPP through defined
