AIMS: Although cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is characterized by significant left atrial (LA) dilatation, the characteristics of LA function remain to be fully investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed LA function by speckle-tracking echocardiography in 124 patients with CA and sinus rhythm: 68 with light chain (AL), 29 with mutant (ATTRm), 27 with wild-type (ATTRwt) transthyretin amyloidosis. Conventional and strain-derived parameters, including LA peak longitudinal strain (LS) and strain rate (peak LSR: reservoir function; early LSR: conduit function; late LSR: active function), were assess

OBJECTIVES: To investigate left atrial (LA) function as a reservoir, as a conduit and as a booster pump in essential hypertension (EH). LA volumes were echocardiographically measured in 28 untreated hypertensive patients and in 20 control subjects.
BACKGROUND: LA makes a large contribution in left ventricular filling, especially in patients with impaired diastolic function. LA function is fundamental in left ventricular filling in hypertensive patients as hypertension results in left ventricular diastolic dysfunction.
METHODS: Diagnosis of EH (blood pressure > 140/90 mm Hg) was based on thre

BACKGROUND: Truncating variants in titin (TTNtv) are the most prevalent genetic etiology of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Although TTNtv has been associated with atrial fibrillation, it remains unknown whether and how left atrial (LA) function differs between patients with DCM with and without TTNtv. We aimed to determine and compare LA function in patients with DCM with and without TTNtv and to evaluate whether and how left ventricular (LV) function affects the LA using computational modeling.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with DCM from the Maastricht DCM registry that underwent genetic test

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of thrombus in the left atrium in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and may be inconsistent because of variability in thrombus morphology. In some cases it is challenging and requires unusual approach. New Doppler-derived methods might be helpful to identify such thrombi. We evaluated quantitative differences in mechanical function of the left atrial appendage (LAA) basal segments using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI)and speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in patients with non-valvular AF with and without LAA thrombus and compared them with SR patient

This study was designed to assess atrial booster pump action in valvular heart disease and to dissect booster pump from reservoir-conduit functions. In five patients with aortic stenosis and six with mitral stenosis, sequential atrioventricular (A-V) pacing was instituted during the course of diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Continuous recording of valvular gradient allowed estimation of flow for each cardiac cycle by transposition of the Gorlin formula. Left ventricular ejection time and left ventricular stroke work in aortic stenosis or left ventricular mean systolic pressure in mitral st

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is one of the most typical causes of atrial fibrillation in developing countries like India. The left atrial and left atrial appendage structure and function are deranged in atrial fibrillation and are a major source of thromboembolism. The goal of this study was to assess the left atrial and left atrial appendage function by transesophageal echocardiography in patients with atrial fibrillation and their comparison in patients with or without RHD.
METHODS: A total of 172 consecutive patients with atrial fibrillation with or without RHD were subjecte

Background: A single procedure combining left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) plus catheter ablation (CA) has been proven to be safe and feasible for treating atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the influence of treatment modality on left atrial (LA) function is not thoroughly explained. Objective: We aimed to investigate the changes of LA function in persistent AF patients undergoing concomitant LAAC and CA. Methods: The study population comprised 65 patients who underwent combined AF ablation and Watchman LAAC (combined therapy group) in our center, and 65 participants of the AF simple ablati

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic left atrial (LA) flutter (LAFL) is common after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the association of baseline LA function with incident LAFL after AF ablation.
METHODS: The source cohort included 216 patients with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) before initial AF ablation between 2010 and 2013. Patients who underwent cryoballoon or laser ablation, patients with AF during CMR, and those with suboptimal CMR, or missing follow-up data were excluded. Baseline LA volume and function were assessed by feature-tracking CMR

OBJECTIVES: Thoracoscopic hybrid ablation is an effective and safe rhythm control strategy for patients with complex forms of atrial fibrillation. Its effect on left atrial function has not yet been studied.
METHODS: In a retrospective single-centre analysis of patients undergoing thoracoscopic hybrid ablation, the left atrial emptying fraction was calculated using the biplane modified Simpson method in the apical 2- and 4-chamber views on transthoracic echocardiography. Left atrial strain (reservoir, conduction and contractility) was quantified using dedicated software.
RESULTS: Sixty-seven

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the most prevalent and modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation. The pressure overload in the left atrium induces pathophysiological changes leading to alterations in contractile function and electrical properties.
OBJECTIVE: In this study our aim was to assess left atrial function in hypertensive patients to determine the association between left atrial function with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF).
METHOD: We studied 57 hypertensive patients (age: 53 ± 4 years; left ventricular ejection fraction: 76 ± 6.7%), including 30 consecutive patients with PAF

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the left atrial (LA) structure and function may develop in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). We sought to determine the contribution of LA mechanical function, including LA stiffness, to AF by comparing patients with paroxysmal AF with normal control subjects, and to evaluate whether LA mechanical function and stiffness are related with the structural changes of LA.
METHODS: Sixty-four paroxysmal AF patients (57 ± 13 years, 59% male) were studied, using a speckle tracking echocardiography, and were compared with 34 age-, gender-, and left ventricu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The role of atrial myocardial dysfunction after cardioversion is unclear. In a comparison of patients after successful cardioversion from chronic atrial fibrillation (CAF) and normal controls, we sought to determine whether Doppler-derived atrial strain rate (A-sr) could be used to measure global left atrial function and whether A-sr was reduced in patients with CAF.
METHODS: A-sr was measured from the basal septal, lateral, inferior and anterior atrial walls from the apical four-chamber and two-chamber views in 37 patients with CAF who had been cardioverted to sinu

We evaluated left atrial systolic function using left atrial ejection force (LAEF) in 19 patients with sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and in 20 with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (Paf) whose ages ranged from 48 to 80 years. We also evaluated 35 normal individuals for comparison. The LAEF was calculated as 1/3 x mitral valve area x (peak velocity of A wave)2 using two-dimensional and pulsed-Doppler echocardiography according to Newton's law of motion and hydrodynamics. In normal individuals, LAEF positively correlated with age (r = 0.82, p < 0.01). Normal LAEF was calculated as 0.098 x age - 0.74 (

Decreased left atrial appendage velocity (LAAV) is considered a significant risk factor thrombus formation in the left atrial appendage (LAA). The aim of this study was to assess the role of echocardiographic left atrial (LA) function parameters in predicting LAAV in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing catheter ablation. We prospectively enrolled consecutive patients with persistent AF undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) directly before the first AF ablation in 2019-2022. Of the 150 patients enrolled in the study, 29.3% (n = 44) had reduced LAAV values de

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PaAF) may present as a single self-terminating episode of atrial fibrillation (AF) or a more persistent form after sinus conversion. We investigated predictors of recurrence in patients with PaAF.
HYPOTHESIS: Left atrial function would be an useful parameter for predicting PaAF recurrence.
METHODS: The study population included 228 PaAF patients (131 males, age 64±14 years) who underwent transthoracic echocardiography immediately after spontaneous sinus conversion at initial AF diagnosis. We followed the study patients for AF recurrence.
RESULTS:

OBJECTIVE: Atrial functional mitral regurgitation (AFMR) is caused by atrial fibrillation and left atrial enlargement. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of left atrial plication (LAP) for AFMR.
METHODS: Of 1164 mitral valve surgery patients at our hospital from January 2000 to May 2019, 22 patients underwent surgery for AFMR. Our retrospective analysis divided the patients with AFMR into two groups according to whether LAP was performed (LAP + group, n = 9; LAP - group, n = 13). Mitral valve angle (MV angle) (horizontal inclination of mitral valve) was measured by pre- and post-operati

BACKGROUND: The role of the dysfunction of left atrium in the occurrence and development of cardiovascular disease has been gradually recognized. We aim to compare the impact on left atrial (LA) function between patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hypertension (HTN) without LA enlargement using cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT), and if possible, explore the capability of LA function for providing clinical implication and predicting clinical adverse events in the early stage of cardiovascular disease.
METHODS: Consecutive 60 HCM patients and 60 HTN pat

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common cause of sudden death in athletes and differentiating this condition from the nonpathological "athlete's heart" remains a challenge. The development of pathological left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with left atrial (LA) dilatation and dysfunction. LA strain and strain rate by two-dimensional (2D) speckle tracking are novel indices of LA function and might contribute to differentiate physiological from pathological LVH among athletes with underdiagnosed HCM.
METHODS: We evaluated 20 patients with nonobstructive HCM, 20 h
