Allergic rhinitis in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Both allergic rhinitis and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common pediatric conditions associated with learning difficulties and sleep disturbances. There are conflicting research data regarding the association between ADHD and atopic disorders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in patients with physician-diagnosed ADHD. METHODS: Patients 5 to 18 years of age who presented with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition diagnosis of ADHD to an outpatient pediatric psychiatry clinic were screened for allerg

Epileptiform abnormalities in children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

The proportion of children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder and epileptiform abnormalities is compared with an historic control group of normal school-aged children. The medical records of 655 children 5-16 years of age referred to a single pediatric neurologist (M.S.) from January 1991 to December 1999 with school problems, behavior problems, or hyperactivity were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical criteria for attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder were satisfied in 476 of these children. An electroencephalogram was obtained from 347 patients and coded as epileptiform in 6.1 +

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent neurobehavioral disorder in childhood. The major components of this disorder are developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, which result in functional impairment in 1 or more areas of academic, social, and emotional function. In addition to the propensity for children to have some compromise of academic and emotional function, children with ADHD also have a higher frequency of co-occurring learning, cognitive, language, motor, and mental health disorders. Similarly, children with devel

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder in children. It is characterized by motor hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention inappropriate for the age. Approximately 5-10 % of school age children are diagnosed to have ADHD. The affected children show significant impairment in social behavior and academic performance. The DSM-5 criteria are useful in diagnosing three subtypes of ADHD based on presence of symptoms described in 3 domains viz ., inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Co-morbidities like specific learning disability, anxiety disorder, op

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

In this chapter we have reviewed the diagnosis and management of attention deficit disorder, focusing particularly on the role of stimulant therapy in ADHD. Hisorical review suggests that ADHD has roots that extend back almost a century. The definition of ADHD is based on inclusion and exclusion criteria that are established by history and reflect behavioral concerns. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a chronic disorder affecting the child's home, school, and community life. The primary symptoms of the disorder manifest a developmental pattern: activity diminishes while attentional d

Learning and Memory Impairments With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

ADHD is a common chronic neurodevelopmental disorder and is characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and are often accompanied by learning and memory impairment. Great evidence has shown that learning and memory impairment of ADHD plays an important role in its executive function deficits, which seriously affects the development of academic, cognitive and daily social skills and will cause a serious burden on families and society. With the increasing attention paid to learning and memory impairment in ADHD, relevant research is gradually increasing. In this article,

Dental malocclusion among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more sleep breathing problems and parafunctional oral habits than individuals without ADHD. However, there is scarce information on the correlation between their dental malocclusion and these functional disorders. The objective of this study was to assess the severity of malocclusion in patients with and without ADHD and to evaluate the correlation between their functional disorders and dental malocclusion. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients aged 6-17 years were divided into 2 groups: ADHD (n = 44) and control (n = 4

Nightmare frequency in adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Nightmare frequency in adult ADHD patients has not yet been studied systematically. In a sample of 65 patients, it could be shown that nightmare frequency was elevated in ADHD patients compared to a sample representative for Germany. Frequent nightmares (once a week or more often) were reported by 4.62 % of the patients and 1.77 % of the controls. This increase was neither explained by the increased dream recall in general nor by the presence of a comorbid mental disorder. Questions about nightmares should be included in the diagnostic procedures for ADHD patients, and it should be tested whet

Gambling behavior among adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Impulsivity is inherent to both problem gambling and ADHD. The purpose of this study is to examine ADHD key symptoms, and gambling behaviors and problem severity among adolescents. Additionally, internalizing and externalizing behaviors exhibited among these individuals and the role of these symptoms in gambling are examined. We used a cross-sectional study design and survey 1,130 adolescents aged 12-19. Results indicated that adolescents who screened positive for ADHD were significantly more likely than non-ADHD adolescents to engage in gambling and significantly more likely to develop gambli

Electrocardiographic screening in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Some investigators have suggested that children receiving stimulant medications to manage attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder should undergo screening electrocardiography to identify asymptomatic cardiac disease. However, no study to date has examined the efficacy and costs of this strategy. In the present study we sought to determine the utility of electrocardiographic screening in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. We reviewed the clinical experience of electrocardiographic screening of subjects with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder <21 years of age from Apr

Oral characteristics of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The purpose of this study was to compare the oral and demographic characteristics of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to those of a control group of children. A sample of 25 dental records of children medicated for ADHD was compared to 127 records of healthy children not receiving any medication. The children with ADHD had a statistically higher prevalence of toothache, bruxism, bleeding gums, and oral trauma histories than the control group (chi square, p < 0.05). The differences in other recorded oral characteristics and habits, such as plaque accumulation, gingi

[Executive dysfunctions in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Several different follow-up studies have shown that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can persist into adulthood. AIM: To review the findings in adults with ADHD related to alterations in the executive functions. DEVELOPMENT: Research conducted among children with ADHD has revealed the existence of alterations in different tasks that evaluate the executive functions, such as the planning test, sustained attention tasks, cognitive flexibility, verbal fluency and working memory tasks, as well as several inhibition response tasks. In adults with ADHD, despite the low

Disentangling deficits in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

CONTEXT: A lack of inhibitory control has been suggested to be the core deficit in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), especially in adults. This means that a primary deficit in inhibition mediates a cascade of secondary deficits in other executive functions, such as attention. Impaired stopping has been claimed to support the inhibition hypothesis. However, executive functions such as inhibition and attention are hard to disentangle. OBJECTIVE: To use event-related potentials in adult patients with ADHD to show that impaired stopping is associated with abnormalities of attention
