Factors influencing the professional quality of life in South African audiologists.

BACKGROUND: Audiologists in South Africa operate within a complex, under-resourced healthcare system where high caseloads, limited institutional support, and emotional demands impact their professional quality of life. While international studies have explored the professional quality of life among various healthcare professionals, little is known about the contextual and psychosocial factors influencing the professional quality of life among audiologists, particularly in in low- and middle-income settings. PURPOSE: This study explored the factors influencing the professional quality of life

Survey of Audiologists' Clinical Practice Patterns and Perceptions of Electrophysiological Assessments.

PURPOSE: Electrophysiological assessments in audiology are used for neurodiagnostic evaluations, newborn hearing screenings, and estimating auditory thresholds when behavioral responses are unobtainable or unreliable. Nonetheless, evidence suggests that many electrophysiological tools remain underutilized. This study examined current practice patterns, perceptions, and barriers related to electrophysiological testing among audiologists in the United States. METHOD: An online survey distributed between January and April 2025 yielded 220 eligible responses. Participants answered questions speci

Investigation of the Effect of Audiologists' Use of Masks on Speech Discrimination Scores.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, the authors aimed to evaluate whether communication between the audiologist and the patient during speech audiometry is disrupted by the use of face masks. METHODS: This was a single-center, observational, prospective study. The audiologist obtained the speech discrimination test (SDT) while participants wore a single layer of surgical mask, an N95 mask, and also while not wearing a mask. RESULTS: A total of 112 patients (224 ears) participated in the study. The SDT score measured by the audiologist while using a surgical mask was lower than the SDT score without

Demographic Disparities in Drive Times to the Nearest Audiologist in the United States.

PURPOSE: Audiological services are underused, possibly because patients need to drive long distances to see a provider. In this study, we measured the association of drive times to the nearest audiologist with population density, income, ethnicity, race, and distance to the nearest audiology graduate program. METHOD: Drive times for each census block group to the nearest audiologist were measured using census data, the National Provider Identifier Registry, and a geographic analyzing tool called ArcGIS for all block groups within the United States. The association between drive times and popu

Expectations for Tinnitus Treatment and Outcomes: A Survey Study of Audiologists and Patients.

BACKGROUND: Roughly 10-15% of the general population is affected by tinnitus and this percentage is estimated to rise in future. Because there is currently no cure for tinnitus, treatment is limited and is primarily achieved through management of symptoms and counseling. PURPOSE: This study compared audiologists' and patients' responses to related survey questions about their expectations regarding tinnitus treatment. Two separate surveys were created, one for patients with tinnitus, and one for practicing audiologists who may treat such patients. The surveys included several related question

Communication patterns in audiologic rehabilitation history-taking: audiologists, patients, and their companions.

OBJECTIVES: The nature of communication between patient and practitioner influences patient outcomes. Specifically, the history-taking phase of a consultation plays a role in the development of a relationship and in the success of subsequent shared decision making. There is limited research investigating patient-centered communication in audiology, and this study may be the first to investigate verbal communication in an adult audiologic rehabilitation context. This research aimed, first, to describe the nature of verbal communication involving audiologists, patients, and companions in the his

Management of adult patients with tinnitus: Preparedness, perspectives and practices of audiologists.

BACKGROUND: Audiologists, globally, are generally challenged when assessing and creating intervention plans to help patients suffering from tinnitus. Tinnitus is very common among individuals and may significantly affect one's quality of life, especially if not addressed by health care professionals. In South Africa, there seems to be limited published studies regarding the current practices of tinnitus management by audiologists. This is mainly because of limited training and a lack of guidelines and strategies for the management of tinnitus. In particular, some participants reported being un

A case for genetics education: collaborating with speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Because speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists (AUDs) are among the first referrals for parents of children exhibiting feeding, speech, language, hearing, and balance difficulties, it is important for SLP and AUD professionals to recognize genetic causes of and contributions to complex and Mendelian communication disorders. We review genetics in the curricula of speech-language pathology and audiology programs and obstacles to its integration throughout curricula. We present suggestions about how SLPs and AUDs can aid in diagnosis and contribute their clinical expertise in charac

Audiologists' presbycusis and associated tinnitus counselling practices within the KwaZulu-Natal province.

BACKGROUND: Counselling plays an integral part in the management of presbycusis and tinnitus. Counselling can be conducted by implementing patient-centred care (PCC), showing improved patient outcomes; however, it has been poorly implemented in healthcare in South Africa (SA), particularly in the field of audiology for this condition. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to report on audiologists' presbycusis and tinnitus counselling practices as guided by the PCC framework within KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). METHOD: Quantitative semi-structured online surveys were conducted using purposive sampling of 41 a
