INTRODUCTION: Auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonia, though essential for comprehensive voice evaluation, are subject to listener bias. Knowledge of an underlying voice disorder can influence auditory-perceptual ratings. Accented speech results in increased listener effort and delays in word identification. Yet, little is known about the impact of foreign language accents on auditory-perceptual ratings for dysphonic speakers. The purpose of this work was to determine the impact of a foreign language accent on experts' auditory-perceptual ratings of dysphonic speakers.

PURPOSE: This study was designed based on the need to verify the effectiveness of education in the vocology area concerning refining perceptual auditory skills. The purpose of the project described in this paper was to examine the effect of knowledge and skills training during a 2-week voice disorders graduate course on auditory-perceptual skills of pre-professional speech-language pathologists. The training effect was evaluated by comparing pre- and post-course results of ratings of voice quality using auditory-perceptual measures.
METHOD: A cohort of 24 graduate students in speech-language

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare perceptual disorder characterized mainly by perceptual distortions of visual objects and one's own body. While there are many case reports of visual and somatosensory distortions associated with AIWS, little is known about auditory distortion. Therefore, we present the case of a 22-year-old right-handed woman who described having auditory as well as visual and somatosensory distortion experiences and a family history of AIWS. The subject reported experiencing multisensory perceptual distortions, where she sees other people's faces as larger and hea

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test standardized stimuli for the Pediatric Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice protocol. The use of these stimuli for cepstral/spectral voice measures was also considered.
METHOD: Three sets of standardized sentences and four prompts designed to elicit connected speech were developed and tested in order to identify the most effective stimuli for use with children. One hundred forty children with (n = 50) and without (n = 90) benign vocal fold lesions recorded all potential stimuli, as well as the sentences developed for the adult Cons

INTRODUCTION: Auditory-perceptual assessments of cough are commonly used by speech-language pathologists working with people with swallowing disorders with emerging evidence beginning to demonstrate their validity; however, their reliability among novice clinicians is unknown. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to characterize the reliability of auditory-perceptual assessments of cough among a group of novice clinicians. As a secondary aim, we assessed the effects of a standardized training protocol on the reliability of auditory-perceptual assessments of cough.

Previous data collected in healthy elderly participants by our laboratory suggested impairment of visual and auditory object processing in normal aging. This impairment seemed not to be related to simple perceptual deficits. The aim of the present study was to identify the mechanism of this disorder according to serial models of object recognition, by dissociating the recognition abilities using naming tasks from a visual and from auditory stimuli, perceptual representations (visual and auditory), and semantic knowledge on the same 62 objects. Fifty three healthy participants were divided in t

The rationale to evaluate for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) in school-aged children is based on the assumption that an auditory-specific perceptual deficit underlies many learning problems including specific reading and language disabilities. A fundamental issue in this area is whether convincing empirical evidence exists to validate this proposition. Herein, we consider the issue of modality specificity by examining the extent to which reading, language, and attention disorders in school-aged children involve perceptual dysfunctions limited to a single sensory modality. Difficul

This literature review concentrates on a disregarded part of depressive disorders' symptomatology (especially concerning present-day classifications of mental disorders) that can be approached with a great number of experimental procedures. From the acoustical field the following findings are demonstrated and discussed: elevated click thresholds in auditory signal detection, changed ear asymmetry in dichotic click detection and differences in dichotic listening asymmetries according to symptomatology. The most important results from the so far investigated optical perceptual disturbances in de

Between 3 and 6 per cent of children who are otherwise unimpaired have extreme difficulties producing and understanding spoken language. This disorder is typically labelled specific language impairment. Children diagnosed with specific language impairment often have accompanying reading difficulties (dyslexia), but not all children with reading difficulties have specific language impairment. Some researchers claim that language impairment arises from failures specific to language or cognitive processing. Others hold that language impairment results from a more elemental problem that makes affe

BACKGROUND: Voice hearing (VH) is a transdiagnostic experience that is common in trauma-related disorders. However, the neural substrates that underlie trauma-related VH remain largely unexplored. While auditory perceptual dysfunction is among the abnormalities implicated in VH in schizophrenia, whether VH in trauma-related disorders also involves auditory perceptual alterations is unknown.
METHODS: We investigated auditory cortex (AC)-related functional connectivity (FC) in 65 women with trauma-related disorders stemming from childhood abuse with varying severities of VH. Using a novel, comp

BACKGROUND: auditory hypersensitivity in the autistic spectrum disorder has been described in the literature since the very first reports. However, this symptom has not been sufficiently explored, especially regarding possible causes, diagnosis and consequences.
AIM: to study sensory-perceptual abnormalities in the autistic spectrum disorder, emphasizing auditory hypersensitivity and to discuss their effects in speech therapy based on the literature found until September 2007 in the following database: Scielo, Lilacs, Web of Science, and Medline.
CONCLUSION: sensory-perceptual abnormalities

Disturbed auditive perception on its own, but even more frequently combined with other partly decreased cerebral functions is almost regularly found in children with speech disorders. They must be recognized and treated along with speech therapy. A report on the difficulties in comprehending this perception deficit neurophysiologically as well as on recent models of categorial hearing of speech is given. In practice such disturbances become relevant if speech disorders appear along with normal audiometric results. The exact observation of such children indicates the existence of disturbed audi

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of the longterm-use of surgical face mask (SFM) on acoustic and auditory-perceptual voice parameters in normophonic subjects without any known risk factor related to voice disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 73 normophonic subjects who were previously included in a couple of studies before the COVID-19 outbreak, 25 people (18 female and 7 male) who were free of any known risk factor related to voice disorders during the outbreak were re-evaluated to assess the long-term effect of SFM on voice by using acoustic (mean F0, Jitter-local, Shimmer-local, Cepstral
